  • So why with a DE razor do you not shave according to grain? I've read to shave according to grain else where, is this a preference thing? Or does it come after technique has been more or less perfected?

  • @smilesmcgee33 oh, you can shave according to the grain if you want. But unlike a cartridge razor you can "cheat" a little and shave in a single direction to help you learn how to hold the razor at a consistant proper angle.

  • I love these videos. I'm getting into DE shaving from straight shaving and it's great fun so far. Very nice for traveling. Thank you Mantic59!

  • DE from straight shaving?? Could you please let me know of how that feels? Most people like straight shaving as oppossed to DE razors, but from the sounds of it, you feel the otherwise??

  • Fantastic videos. I just started DE shaving and hear your voice reminding me "don't bear down!!" when I am inclined to do so. I am shaving the face well enough though I am having problems with bumps and irritation in the neck region. Is this and ajustment to a new kind of shaving or is it a matter of technique?

  • kageti- Both!

  • "Don't bear down!" I love the intonation when he says it.

  • These are great video tutorials, thank you for making them! :)

  • I have a rediculous amount of razor burn on my neck, and I've been trying to reduce it but it doesnt seem to be working. Any suggestions?

  • TheMajician- have you tried "J-Hooking" as described in my "Advanced Shaving Techniques" video?

  • Yes, but I wasn't too good at it so I stopped doing that. I've been doing as you said in another video, shaving with the grain, lathering again, then shaving against. The razor burn has stopped increasing, but still isn't going away.

  • TheMajician- Instead of shaving against the grain, relather and shave across the grain (90 degrees away from the grain) then relather and try against the grain. And remember, no pressure on the blade!

  • I'll give it a try thanks.

  • I think you meant to say 45 degrees? Thanks so much for the videos... I asked for a DE safety razor and shaving brush for xmas, and if it wasn't for you I'd have no clue how to use them. How did we cope before the internet?! I'm gonna try and grow a pencil moustache now I have a precision blade.

  • Sorry, I take it back, 90 was probably right, watching the videos again! I'm having trouble with my neck too now, and I think the problem is the curvature of the skin against the straight razor blade. I think I'll have to leave it a few days to reduce in redness and bumpiness from my inept attempts, and be more careful next time. I copied the diagrams from the wet shaving video by hand - are they available on the web for printing?

  • I get razor burn really bad on my neck also. J-Hooking is the best method. If you are prone to razor burn, DO NOT shave against the grain.

  • i'll go and try =)

  • So I'm done with my lather and I've got my hunk of soap in the mug, all covered in foam. Now what do I do with it?

  • Its really, but is there a video part3 with DE shaving

  • Great series! My only suggestion/request would be a comprehensive video on shaving with a straight razor. That would be incredible.

  • Really like the series, still can't believe you're shaving up against the grain though

  • As the beard is reduced, grain becomes more and more irrelevant.

  • I was hoping for something much longer. The whole series is great.

  • Patience! :-) Learn your basic technique first, then we'll get to the good stuff. Stay tuned...!

  • Thanks for uploading this abridged version. All episodes are great.
