solid states dont have a spinning hard drive, they are solid with no moving parts, so its alot faster in terms of read and write speeds. it will boot up ALOT faster and it will generally make the hard drive faster. however, they are HELLA expensive, like 800 bucks for 256GB, which is alot. its not worth it though. no one needs that much speed... so go with the normal hard drive @ 7200RPM.

I'm going to be buying a new macbook for college in the Fall. I've been looking around and it sounds like you know your stuff. I plan on just doing papers, some movies, music, and some music editing/production (Protools or Logic). You're saying the SDD is unneccessary (even the 128GB is $315) so I plan on getting the 500 GB @7200 RPM. I'm going to get 4GB of RAM because I hear that even 2GB is more than enough. How many GHZ should I get?

@yotube123454321 okay. if youre gonna do editing, go with the 15" model. 13" is TOO cramped and small. if youre doing sound editing, you will need 4GB. 4GB is the best deal and value at the moment. so you have 2 choices now. if you will be doing hardcore gaming or multitasking as well, go with 2.66 GHz and 8GB ram. other wise, 2.8 or 3.06GHz and 4GB ram is fine. if you have enough money, go with the 3.06Ghz.

@yotube123454321 if you have 2 grand only to spend, your best bet would be the 2ND option for 15inch. if you can spend more, get the 3RD option for 15inch. youre lucky they changed so fast because theyve been updated, and the processors are 1.5x faster. good luck! if you have any more questions, dont hesitate to ask.

@kia0007 well it depends on what you are doing. if youre just going to surf the web and listen to music and things like that, a 13" will do fine. the 15" should be more for video and photo editing, etc. etc. i have the 15". the 17" is a desktop replacement. so if youre just doing basic things on it, 13" will be fine.

O, nice, that's helpful. I noticed that the best 15" and best 13" are now both 2.66GHz. If I got the 13" i could "juice" it up with a 128 GB SSD, get Office, and the 3 year warranty for exactly $2000. 2000 isn't a limit, but I figure it would be nice to save a few hundred dollars (15" with same stuff is $2600). You said that the 13" is "TOO cramped and small". Do you think it would be worth having it small and cramped to get the 128 GB SSD and still save a few hundred dollars?

An Express Card is a slot for holding an Express Card. Google a picture of it, and you'll see what I'm talking about. And yes, they make Express Card SD readers. Pretty cheap too.

Are the solid slate drives good? I have the base model mac but there are some things that make it tic like opening pages and the document being 27,000 kb that makes it lock up so i need to get more ram and possibly a bigger processor even though i cant

With no moving parts, solid-state drives are less fragile than hard disks and are also silent (unless a cooling fan is used); as there are no mechanical delays, they usually enjoy low access time and latency. so in other words you can access programs as fast as electricity can move but SSD come in smaller GB than HDD but you get a much more powerful drive that accesses programs and files almost instantly

ups for solid state drive - open files very fast save very fast, much better for moving around and better if you drop it. than a hdd. downs- expensive smaller amount of memory and they will not last as long as a hdd. they wear out pretty fast at this point in time.

@thed1776 Um...no, SSDs are storage devices, not RAM, and as for lifespan, SSDs are theoretically capable of lasting a century. Even drives with MLC controllers are capable of lasting a conservative 5 years, which is better than a platter HDD, which after 3 years you should consider replacing.

what do you use computers for? Mac os x is compatible with actually everything, but maybe pc's are more compatible with games. I would definitely recommend mac, and if don't know it, with boot camp you can always put a windows partition on a mac.

I'm in film school and just bought a macbook pro. It is the best computer I've edited on, apart from mac pros at the school. Get the 3.06 ghz processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB SSD (plus huge external). You won't be sorry.

aluminum is really good because it dissipates heat really really well that is why they can put better stuff in and not have worry about colling as much if you do not believe me take a piece of aluminum foil and throw it in the oven or on the stove take it out and with your bare hands see how long it takes for it to cool down from 300 degres
