@CrazyTanMan Believe me, you don't want 3.06 GHz. The thing gets so hot, you could probably fry eggs on it. I imagine this is why Apple stopped offering it.
@CrazyTanMan it's intel core 2 duo (processor), the new processor is way faster, it may not get up to 3.06Ghz, but the processor matters more than GHz! 2.8GHz intel core i7, is way faster than 3.06GHz intel core 2 duo...
running the same thing 8 gb ram only difference, no complaints here either, knew the refresh was coming, but was one of my dying aunts last wishes I got the machine while she was here, and she got to see it
solid states dont have a spinning hard drive, they are solid with no moving parts, so its alot faster in terms of read and write speeds. it will boot up ALOT faster and it will generally make the hard drive faster. however, they are HELLA expensive, like 800 bucks for 256GB, which is alot. its not worth it though. no one needs that much speed... so go with the normal hard drive @ 7200RPM.
I'm going to be buying a new macbook for college in the Fall. I've been looking around and it sounds like you know your stuff. I plan on just doing papers, some movies, music, and some music editing/production (Protools or Logic). You're saying the SDD is unneccessary (even the 128GB is $315) so I plan on getting the 500 GB @7200 RPM. I'm going to get 4GB of RAM because I hear that even 2GB is more than enough. How many GHZ should I get?
@yotube123454321 okay. if youre gonna do editing, go with the 15" model. 13" is TOO cramped and small. if youre doing sound editing, you will need 4GB. 4GB is the best deal and value at the moment. so you have 2 choices now. if you will be doing hardcore gaming or multitasking as well, go with 2.66 GHz and 8GB ram. other wise, 2.8 or 3.06GHz and 4GB ram is fine. if you have enough money, go with the 3.06Ghz.
@yotube123454321 actually, dont buy the laptop so soon. its almost time for an update, hopfully in a month or so, and the update will have the new i5 and i7 processors, which are much better, so its best if you wait a bit :)
hey, so just as I was set on what to buy....they change everything on me. i cant post a url, but if you go to the apple website and click on the Macbook Pro's, you can see all the new configurations. Same thoughts or what?
Sorry for asking so many questions, I just want to spend 2 grand the right way
@yotube123454321 if you have 2 grand only to spend, your best bet would be the 2ND option for 15inch. if you can spend more, get the 3RD option for 15inch. youre lucky they changed so fast because theyve been updated, and the processors are 1.5x faster. good luck! if you have any more questions, dont hesitate to ask.
@kia0007 well it depends on what you are doing. if youre just going to surf the web and listen to music and things like that, a 13" will do fine. the 15" should be more for video and photo editing, etc. etc. i have the 15". the 17" is a desktop replacement. so if youre just doing basic things on it, 13" will be fine.
@yotube123454321 also, if youre still in school, you can get $200 off. on the apple website, click store and on the left, it'll say "education store," just put in your school and you'll get a discount.
O, nice, that's helpful. I noticed that the best 15" and best 13" are now both 2.66GHz. If I got the 13" i could "juice" it up with a 128 GB SSD, get Office, and the 3 year warranty for exactly $2000. 2000 isn't a limit, but I figure it would be nice to save a few hundred dollars (15" with same stuff is $2600). You said that the 13" is "TOO cramped and small". Do you think it would be worth having it small and cramped to get the 128 GB SSD and still save a few hundred dollars?
Also, I dont really care about screen size. I'm going to get 13 or 15, but I was wondering if there's any limitations to the 13 other than just a smaller screen. 2.53GHz is the most you can get with the 13". Is that enough? I'd be willing to pay the extra money for the 15" if it's going to be significantly faster. I hate when computers run slow.

the 17 inch has an 8 hour battery and it doesnt have a SD card slot. however, it does have a expresscard/34 slot... but those are the only differences compared to this ^^ laptop...
Wish they would have put an Express Card slot on this one... Or at least put more than one Firewire port! Jeez! What if you do a lot of audio stuff like me and have a need for more than 1 Firewire port? Much less now it's only an 800 vs the 400 AND 800 ports they used to offer. Ugh!
Yes I know about the adapter from 800 to 400 and vice versa. I am just pissed the new Macs only come with ONE port, do you see what I'm saying? On my 2007 MBP I have 2 ports, one 400 and one 800. And I like to run MORE THAN ONE FIREWIRE DEVICE and you can't do that if you only have ONE PORT. An Expres Card slot makes that easier because you can buy firewire express cards 34
An Express Card is a slot for holding an Express Card. Google a picture of it, and you'll see what I'm talking about. And yes, they make Express Card SD readers. Pretty cheap too.
dude the 17 inch macbook is a beast such a powerhouse and you can even get the solid state drive in it as well this is the best laptop on the market right now and if you get all the best upgrades youll end up spending about $3500 but man is it a smooth running computer once you get all that stuff
Are the solid slate drives good? I have the base model mac but there are some things that make it tic like opening pages and the document being 27,000 kb that makes it lock up so i need to get more ram and possibly a bigger processor even though i cant
With no moving parts, solid-state drives are less fragile than hard disks and are also silent (unless a cooling fan is used); as there are no mechanical delays, they usually enjoy low access time and latency. so in other words you can access programs as fast as electricity can move but SSD come in smaller GB than HDD but you get a much more powerful drive that accesses programs and files almost instantly
i totally agree. but the problem with the gb can be solved by simply buying an external hard drive. you can buy a 2tb for about 200 bucks. pretty good deal if i do say so myself
ups for solid state drive - open files very fast save very fast, much better for moving around and better if you drop it. than a hdd. downs- expensive smaller amount of memory and they will not last as long as a hdd. they wear out pretty fast at this point in time.
@thed1776 Um...no, SSDs are storage devices, not RAM, and as for lifespan, SSDs are theoretically capable of lasting a century. Even drives with MLC controllers are capable of lasting a conservative 5 years, which is better than a platter HDD, which after 3 years you should consider replacing.
what do you use computers for? Mac os x is compatible with actually everything, but maybe pc's are more compatible with games. I would definitely recommend mac, and if don't know it, with boot camp you can always put a windows partition on a mac.
if you just want it for average usage i highly recommend a mac. by average usage i pretty much mean no hardcore gaming or trying to hack into peoples computers.
I'm not very sure on this, but in my opinion i would go with the pro. either 13 inch or 15 inch. but i would get another person for an opinion on this. Sorry i wasnt of any better help
I'm in film school and just bought a macbook pro. It is the best computer I've edited on, apart from mac pros at the school. Get the 3.06 ghz processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB SSD (plus huge external). You won't be sorry.
Maybe the'll go with carbon fibre or something. I don't know. My sister know a man who travels around the world. And according to her, he said the'll have quad-core processors, and they would be made out of plastic anymore.
Even if they are, it's Apple were talking about. They're geniuses. If they decide to lose aliminium, then they must have a good reason for it.
aluminum is really good because it dissipates heat really really well that is why they can put better stuff in and not have worry about colling as much if you do not believe me take a piece of aluminum foil and throw it in the oven or on the stove take it out and with your bare hands see how long it takes for it to cool down from 300 degres
I really hope they do improve graphics card in the next MBP, but I hope they keep the same aluminium unibody! Ugh, if they revert back to a cheap plastic thing, I'm gonig to scream!
How much better is the quad-core to the current thing? Is it quite a lot better?
mobile i7 is a slower i7 chip that wont get as hot or use as much power. laptops need the coolest and lowest power consoming cpus possible. for good life span and bettery life.
Hey I'm still deciding which one to get, 5400 or 7200...Does it make some noise? I've heard that the 5400 is dead silent. And what about vibration..Great video
I've basically got the 17" version of this. A little heavy, a little distancing in terms of actually typing on it but that gorgeous 1900 by 1200 screen makes it worthwhile. Admittedly that screen is crying out for a Blu-ray drive though!
i disagree. i own an Imac and a macbook. and my family has 3 of their own macs and we live in a shitty house and couldnt pay the power bill last week so HA!!!
and look at the specs difference. netbook - macbook 1.6ghz single core - 2.26ghz duo core 1gb ddr2 - 2gb ddr3 160gb - 250gb shit - NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics 9" - 13" 3 hour battery - 7 hour battery shit small trackpad - amazing trackpad windows - os x and windows not to mention their slow as hell
Thanks for the review and information. I've been considering buying the exact spec you have for a while now and you pretty much sold me on it. Now, all i have to do is convince myself the investment in fully justified and make the money available to go and get one.
I JUST GOT MY NEW 15 INCH MACBOOK PRO 2.8 GHz 500GB HARD DRIVE 4GB RAM 1066MHz WITH MATTE SCREEN I KNOW THEY JUST CAME OUT 2 WEEKS AGO IM SO HAPPY IS MUCH BETTER THAN GLOSSY AND LOOKS BETTER AND MY SISTER HAS THE GLOSSY SCREEN AND THE COLOR ON BOTH ARE THE SAME JUST THE WENT THE SUN HITS MY COMPUTER STILL BETTER
@2NOTORIOUSPAC Umm... you're either referring to the two USB ports, next to the Display Port, or the ethernet port on the left and the Display Port on the right.
no it is not worth the money to go 3.06gh because its a small difference. i suggest getting the 2.8ghz macbook pro and puting a ssd in it, but dont buy it through apple
Do you think a MacBook pro is worth an upgrade for me? I've got a white 2.20 ghz intel core 2 duo MacBook with 3gb of ram and a 250 gb 5400 rpm hard disk.

Macs suck, find me one mac under 2500 on par with my asus.
-2nd gen quad core 2.0 Ghz (turbo button to 2.9)
-15.6 inch screen 1920x1080 (no mac under 17 inches even offers this)
- 6gb ram (200 dollar upgrade from the base mac)
- GTX 460m ( better GPU than any mac below 2500)
-SSD 120 Gb, 550 Mb/s read and 500 Mb/s write ( better than any mac, literally)
-second drive 640 Gbs (internal, macs under 17 dont offer second drives)
- Macs suck, the end.

bigjalil 2 years ago
@bigjalil
I'm not very sure on this, but in my opinion i would go with the pro. either 13 inch or 15 inch. but i would get another person for an opinion on this. Sorry i wasnt of any better help
dbarrera12 2 years ago
If it's very heavy editing, I would go with the pro.
gmanist1000 2 years ago
I'm in film school and just bought a macbook pro. It is the best computer I've edited on, apart from mac pros at the school. Get the 3.06 ghz processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB SSD (plus huge external). You won't be sorry.
Eatyaface2008 2 years ago
You would be broke however. That setup will cost you over 4000 dollars. I, for instance, haven't got that kind of money.
3XPERIMANTAL 2 years ago
Yeah it's pretty steep. I paid about 3,300 dollars, (wrote off some costs as work expenses).
Eatyaface2008 2 years ago
On top of that.. 8 gb's of RAM is quite a lot. 4gb's are already enough
3XPERIMANTAL 2 years ago
True, but the upgrade wasn't that expensive and I'd rather have it when I'm editing HD video plus using other applications.
Eatyaface2008 2 years ago
You might need those amounts of RAM. But all I will be doing with it would be internet and the occasional Photoshop
3XPERIMANTAL 2 years ago
I agree, for what you are going to be using it for 8GB of RAM is overkill.
Eatyaface2008 2 years ago
I'm gonna wait until next year January though, when the new MacBook Pro's are released. Which'll probably have mobile i7 processors.
3XPERIMANTAL 2 years ago
yeah, that'll be sweet! Hopefully by that time better graphics cards too.
Eatyaface2008 2 years ago
They say the chance is big the graphics will be by ATI. Like the iMac has now. Ive also heard rumors of it not being made out of aliminium anymore.
But those are just rumors. The only thing sure it the quad-core.
3XPERIMANTAL 2 years ago
New graphic cards would be nice, but I kind of like the aluminum body, I hope they stick with that. Over-all quad core will be very sweet.
Eatyaface2008 2 years ago
Maybe the'll go with carbon fibre or something. I don't know. My sister know a man who travels around the world. And according to her, he said the'll have quad-core processors, and they would be made out of plastic anymore.
Even if they are, it's Apple were talking about. They're geniuses. If they decide to lose aliminium, then they must have a good reason for it.
But all we can do now is wait until january.
3XPERIMANTAL 2 years ago
aluminum is really good because it dissipates heat really really well that is why they can put better stuff in and not have worry about colling as much if you do not believe me take a piece of aluminum foil and throw it in the oven or on the stove take it out and with your bare hands see how long it takes for it to cool down from 300 degres
fierwall5 2 years ago
*a guy who works for a mayor computer company, and therefore travels a lot.
3XPERIMANTAL 2 years ago
Damn.
I really hope they do improve graphics card in the next MBP, but I hope they keep the same aluminium unibody! Ugh, if they revert back to a cheap plastic thing, I'm gonig to scream!
How much better is the quad-core to the current thing? Is it quite a lot better?
:)
Pokemongo1 2 years ago
Well you could try searching for benchmarks. But I think the score of the 2.66 C2D was around 700, and the 1.6 i7 got 1200.. If I remember it right.
3XPERIMANTAL 2 years ago
What is mobile i7 processor?
Pokemongo1 2 years ago
This has been flagged as spam show
Google it. It's a quad-core processor.
3XPERIMANTAL 2 years ago
mobile i7 is a slower i7 chip that wont get as hot or use as much power. laptops need the coolest and lowest power consoming cpus possible. for good life span and bettery life.
thed1776 2 years ago
@bigjalil yes the macbook pro is better for editing and all the graphics stuff
Jegag1 1 year ago
you can replace the batterie but than your warranty is gone and why should if there is no upgrade
themasaii 2 years ago
i think highend laptops are a waste of money... if you're getting anything high end it better damn well have replaceable parts.
glennlopez 2 years ago
presumably the battery life or supply is reduced (per charge session I mean) when the keyboard is lit all the time ?

Hey I'm still deciding which one to get, 5400 or 7200...Does it make some noise? I've heard that the 5400 is dead silent. And what about vibration..Great video
abcborgess 2 years ago
what do you think is better? a glossy screan, or anti glossy screan I'm getting 17" but I do not know witch one to get...
Frozen3Fire 2 years ago
I love glossy because it looks so good to me.
gmanist1000 2 years ago
Agree
TrevorRaven 2 years ago
I've basically got the 17" version of this. A little heavy, a little distancing in terms of actually typing on it but that gorgeous 1900 by 1200 screen makes it worthwhile. Admittedly that screen is crying out for a Blu-ray drive though!

no they are poor, because they paid so much money for the mac and now have no disposable income.

Or they saw something they wanted and worked for it.
CoolEnufForaMac 2 years ago
Mac desktops start at $600 and laptops start at $1000
Which isnt bad for a computer. plus it will outlive 3 PC's
Not because it will break, because macs NEVER DIE... LITERALLY!!!! but because you want the new cool Macs.

Thanks for the review and information. I've been considering buying the exact spec you have for a while now and you pretty much sold me on it. Now, all i have to do is convince myself the investment in fully justified and make the money available to go and get one.

im about to buy a macbook pro for studies and was wondering whether it straches easily or if u hav protection on it
bloodfang07 2 years ago
It can scratch, but only if you put some pressure on it to scratch it. You can just buy a case for it if you're going to lug it around places.
gmanist1000 2 years ago
@2NOTORIOUSPAC Umm... you're either referring to the two USB ports, next to the Display Port, or the ethernet port on the left and the Display Port on the right.

tantanman2852 2 years ago
also could you tell me whether it's worth it upgrading it from 2.8ghz up to 3.06? Is it worth themoney they charge?
tantanman2852 2 years ago
umm, personally i don't think its worth it, its only a tiny bit faster processor and all the same other specs.
spells14 2 years ago
no it is not worth the money to go 3.06gh because its a small difference. i suggest getting the 2.8ghz macbook pro and puting a ssd in it, but dont buy it through apple

Do you think a MacBook pro is worth an upgrade for me? I've got a white 2.20 ghz intel core 2 duo MacBook with 3gb of ram and a 250 gb 5400 rpm hard disk.
trackrunner908 2 years ago
I'll buy my MBP unibody when Snow Leopard is coming out. Mine will be the 17 inch with 3.06GHz an 8GB RAM.
ColdingoVich 2 years ago
lol, that'll be expensive.
KleptHoeManiac 2 years ago
Will it be fast?
ColdingoVich 2 years ago
Yes. 3.06 GHz processor in a laptop....dual core is really fast! I am waiting until next year, when they announce the neifenheim processors!
KleptHoeManiac 2 years ago
I can't wait a year. I got no computer.
ColdingoVich 2 years ago
