Mauri Rose didn't win the '39 race, Wilbur Shaw did. Shaw also won in '37 and '40, and was on his way to winning 3 in a row in 1941 when the wires in his right rear wheel came undone and he crashed into the wall. There was one wheel Shaws' team couldn't get balanced right, and they marked it "OK balance, use last." But the chalk marks were washed off during the attempt to extinguish the "Gasoline Alley" fire. Rose was the co-winner in '41, relieving Floyd Davis. Rose won in '47 and '48 also.
Indy was like a slaughter house back then. It's amazing how the announcers used words like "death" and "devils" to describe the race. Amazing footage...wow! I have so much respect for the drivers back in those days.
These videos need to be protected. That is so classic. All those men are lions. No way any driver today would dare take one of those cars around the track like that today. You say they are like Sprint Cars? Well sprint cars with ZERO safty, many do not even have belts holding the driver in. Some drivers want to jump off the 120mph cars rather than drive it into a wall. CRAZY!
these cars going thru the turns are like sprint cars...they sort of slide sideways. these drivers were a different breed...racing was gritty and the safety equipment they had is not much more than a joke by our standards
This is one of the greatest posts! I mean "DAMN!" these some brave people back then! but i guess in about 50 years from now, they'll look back at racing in the 1980's,1990's and current and say "DAMN! THEY WERE SOME BRAVE PEOPLE BACK THEN!" What in the World is indy and nascar and other forms of racing going to be like in 50 years? I keep on hearing "Crap cars of the future" i guess the question is "What is racing? is it man? or machine? or both? to whom do we respect? man or machine or both?"
I now have a better understanding of "learning from the past" And in this case, auto racing is on the brink of going faster and farther. I predict more aggressive style racing is ahead of us, with even more international involvement, more power resulting in 250-275 miles per hour will be seen in the open plains of Africa, audiences will not goto a track, they will watch it digitally from stadiums, viewing bars and homes. Racing will evolve! And the next 50 years will be fascinating!
One of the narrators is incorrect in saying that Mauri Rose won in 1939. It was Wilbur Shaw. Shaw won "The 500" in 1937,'39,&'40. Mauri Rose scored wins @ Indy in 1941 (co-driving with Floyd Davis), '47, & '48. thanks.
I would read every thing I could get my hands on about The 500 when I was in grade school. The drivers of that era were like gods to me. A neighbor was a riding mechanic at Indy in the 1930s and described the race as "Afternoons of sheer horror". I spent a lot of time listening to his accounts of many races.
steve, p/s the ride in mechanic for kelly petillo was Jimmy Dunnham is this you ride in mechanic, ,if so we are now best freinds(even if he's not Jimmy we are still freinds) , and could you ask him please! if he has any info on my uncle Kelly Petillo 1935 winner Indy 500.Kelly Born 1905 to Died June 30th 1970 in L.A.
My neighbor's name was Cleon Tschan and He passed away in the fall of 1969.He wrenched on the Blue Crown Spark Plug cars right after WWII. Maury Rose won twice in one and Bill Holland once in the other. He was an unique character with a waxed mustache, cigarette holder, sunglasses and a stoker cap or beret. I never knew him to drive a car that wasn't tricked out for performance.
good video but where the f@#$ you get this or thses videos from you tivo it from a history show or somethin or you work at some kinda history place cuz i dont understand where people get these videos from
Notice how small the stands were back then. I'll bet The Indy 500 had a Midwestern County/State Fair Feel to it then.
It was HUGE in terms of atmosphere by the 60's.
