You'd think just because there's not a "th" sound in japanese, they'd still be able to say it. Because when they speak english, there's a "th" sound in english, right? That's no excuse. Sonic just sucks at english pronounciation. You're either good at it or you're bad at it. I've heard japanese say "thank you" properly before.

That's easy to say as an English speaker. However try making the らりるれろ sounds. You're probably not able. Non-native Japanese speakers hear the sound as a "d" or "r" sound. It's neither. Even people who can sort of hear it usually aren't able to imitate it properly. It's the same for the Japanese and some of our letters. It's because at birth our brain learns certain sounds to apply to language and after that it is very difficult to hear anything else. Continued in next commment...

You can find a lot of scientific and psychological journals on it explaining how children until a certain age can "understand" all languages.

However after years of practice or due to a particularly a good ear some non-native speakers can imitate the sounds of another language pretty well. It is definitely not easy though. If you believe it is, try imitating some other languages' sounds. If you think you're accurate you'll probably be laughed at.

Since it's not there native language there is really no reason for them to worry about speaking it properly unless they have to. I can go out and try to learn [insert language] but speaking properly may take time and practice.

hmm... I think most european learners of japanese speak as bad as
