possibly one of my fav animes of all time :) listening to the music again after so long makes me wanna re-watch it all! just wondering though, can you please tell me where i can find the download links for the novel? really appreciate it if you could let me know :)
this really does need to be more widely spread! The DVDs are published by a rare and exotic movie company. and the books are very rare too. took me 2 weeks to find the 1st one.
@OtakuFreak08 I actually wrote an analysis paper on the Twelve Kingdoms (novel) in my literature class and my professor was really impressed with the novel.
It is shame that since the original text was not in English so many people do not know this novel. It really should be more recognized by people.
Most teachers are reserved with their opinions on foreign subject matter. Still... for you to do a novel report AND for it to get positive recognition is some very good news.
The novel is very well written. And the anime, while doing things a bit differently for "can't translate this into a show" sake, is an excellent adaption.
@Alillan I believe the composer went out of his way to use traditional Chinese music characteristics and instruments in the soundtrack. Pipa, Gu Zheng and the Erhu can be heard throughout the soundtrack. I think that's awesome.
I've read the translated one in English. Even though I know that there are many expressions and ideas in Japanese that are difficult to translate into English, I kinda felt that the translation could be better.
If you have read the novel in English, please tell me how it was as a single novel, not an anime; is the novel well written in English? Is it appealing enough to be read by people (both kids and adults) in English speaking country?
@AshEiji FYI I haven't read the manga, but I've read parts of the novels. There aren't any English translations directly from the writer, only Japanese. But there are a number of decent translations, the best of which are by Eugene Woodbury (you may find links on the Ranka fansite).
It's not a single novel; it's a series, and much larger and widespread than the anime (even though the anime follows at least 4 different plots).
Woodbury's translation is high-level English, despite some typos.
@Alillan Yes Alillan, I've watched the series on Animax, and I was fascinated by the ancient ways of people back then, in China just like in Japan. But my fascination went before watching even anime.
@GorgutzDM this song was used as the ending theme for an animation series called "Twelve Kingdoms"
the series is based on some chinese mythologies and folklores, and i personally think that this song contains some tastes of chinese music (even though it was composed by a japanese composer)
At 4:35 is the episode #19 The Sea of Wind, The Shore of The Maze Chapter 5. When Taiki to save both Risai's and Ryousou's life, faces Tostetsu a giant monster and successfully defeats it to be his Shirei.
The next pick is when Taiki finally transforms into a Kirin, chooses Gyousou to be a king and swears his loyalty.
Magnifica serie. Se me hace como un señor de los anillos japones. Pero voto mas por esta serie pues se me antoja mas realista todavía que la obra de Tolkien.
I thoguht the beginning was annoying, the middle fascinating, and the ending some kinda filler story. Oh well ":-l Still a really good story teaches you many & I think I will read the books because I hear the anime doesnt tell the whole story (The anime only tells 3 or 4 of the book story arcs)
there is only 45 episode, but on the 45th ep it doesnt really end. more like a cliff hanger. does anyone know if there is a second season to ths anime?
There is one novel out in English released by Tokyopop. That one is the arc in which Youko becomes Empress. The 2nd book is coming out either February or March of 2008 about the Atsuyu arc and how the Emperor of En suppresses a rebellion. Tokyopop being the terrible publisher it is plans on releasing one novel per year. However, if you read French, the French publisher Editions Milan plans on releasing all the books from April 2007 to 2008. 3 Novels are already published and available on Amazon.
They planned on making around 60 episodes, I think, but by the time they got to 45 episodes they'd adapted all of the novels and had no more material to work with. Rather than making up stuff on their own (like Fullmetal Alchemist did when they overtook the manga), they decided to wait until there were more novels to work with before carrying on with the story.
Unfortunately, while new novels have come out, there's been no word of an extension to the anime.
LOVE this song! I have 2 soundtracks but 1 has it slow, and the other has only the instrumental version and another slow version with the woman harmonizing with it. :( Love this anime too! One of the best ever!

Even though it's hard to believe this is the closest anime to being as grandeur as Lord of the Rings.
Of course, this anime has so much value and rich character development it goes without saying it's one of the greatest animes ever made.
This needs to be watched more and needs to be spread out more.

The anime is based on a series of novels.
The studio ran into problems and never adapted them, although I believe Tokyopop is translating the books.
