When I first heard Maiden, I didn't like it at all. Then, about 5 years from this day, my friend forced me to listen The Trooper. I was amazed, and started listening to Iron Maiden, it became my favourite band. I didn't know who was that guitarrist who played like that, like God himself. Then, about three years ago I started to play guitar myself, mainly inspired by Mr. Smith. I love to play his solos, they sound so great. He is an unbelievable player. I hope some day I will be as good as he is.

@Crea80r Maybe it sounds like instrumental music because the solos are edited out of the songs. In a way by taking the solos out of context of the song it loses a lot of its flavor and meaning. Imagine listening to cemetery gates with just the middle solo. It would sound significantly less powerful than within the context of the entire song.

Because Adrians solos are more precise and perfected. He actually writes them out and perfects them. His vibrato is second to none, and the way he pics every note rather than letting his fingers just run up the scales is great.

All of his solos are written to meet thge climactic notes, and it is pure brilliance.

The thing about Adrian Playing is, that he writes the solos to go with the music. Even his fast playing has something to do with the way the song was written. He's solos are arranged to the chord progression of the song. Which as a musician point of view he is the best guitar players of the 3.

Both Murray and Gers are excellent guitar players, Murray being the virtuoso and Gers being the prankster :-D But Adrian...he converts guitar playing into pure poetry, every solo is saying something. And the whole Maiden song has additional meaning. Just look at Seventh son. Pure genius, from all members in both the musical and lyrical department.

I've always thought the Rime of the Ancient was an amazing solo, and I think Adrian's tapping (or whatever it is called) during Mariner is even better. But how can you make a list like this without Wasted Years and, of course, Stranger in a Strange Land? Paschendale is still the best solo in the video.
