I totally believe in the preservation of our reefs and the beautiful fish that accompany them. I also am an avid fish collector. I believe in the saltwater fish should be farm raised/tank raised. I think if you can't breed in captivity leave them alone!!! Support our oceans, only keep farm/tank raised fish in your tanks!!
this is quite sad, if you want to watch a fish swimming, go for a swim in the ocean. Taking tourists diving for a look is more sustainable, Aquarium fish collecting is not sustainable because nothing is being put back into the system
If we keep on with this fish slavery!we will all pay for our ignorence.STOP!!!!!!!!!b4 its to late, how would you like if sum big monster came and took u or ur child away,i think u wouldnt like that. The problem IS...we treat the nature of the world like we treat each other, what a shame that animals and nature have to suffer under us.
As you mentioned, seems like we've gotta get from under slavery ourselves. No matter what your spiritualy/religious beliefs are, it just goes to prove that man has, and will continue to dominate man to his injury. The poor animals, environment and land are by products of this simple buy omnipresent manifestation.
People interested in saltwater aquaria need to seek out and support aquaculture so that these amazing animals do not need to be removed from their natural habitat. For those of you not familiar with this term it is the breeding of organisms in a captive environment.
You have got to be kidding me. The people featured in the video are catching fish in the most sustainable way, with nets instead of cyanide, and they are being chided for this? Tell me, how else can you make some money if you live on a small island with nothing but a bunch of palm trees and sand? the aquarium industry is probably the biggest employer of tropical island populations, and that makes islanders value their reefs for more than food.
Well, the easiest way would be to get rid of all the foreigners for starters (primarily Australian and British) with their [over] consumption and colonialism --impractical, I know , but I agree with you on the eco friendly nature of the work.
Actually, I dont agree with your thought to get rid of the foreigners. Yes, they are mostly British / Australian / and New Zealanders, with a lot of Americans passing through too.
They are surely the BIGGEST investors in Vanuatu, and their businesses and the tourism dollars from foreigners are important income for the locals in both Vanuatu and Fiji. Much more so than the aquarium industry.
If you grow up in a place like this snorkeling, are you a tourist? I think corrallite makes an excellent argument about the work of these folks. I know as an american, my neighbors are constantly retreated to "unspoiled" areas of nature, where life is simpler, more relaxed. And what they mean is consuming places like this...not going on a camping trip at a state park. Just saying that is seems ironic that biggest animal lovers all live in heavily commercial areas.
More than enough fish in the ocean.

Fortunately with many species collecting is a obsolete practice.
some good examples are fish such as percula and Bengal cardinals.
I myself am i active participant in Coral Aqua culture.
I just fragged up some pachyclavularia and briareum a week back.
I don`t need to import most species.
Anyone ever heard about the coral farming setup they use in fiji now?
Its quite a bit less damaging.

If aqua culture was used more extensively then there would be no need to excavate whole coral colonies.
All you really need is a small frag taken from the wild colony, not the whole colony itself.
This is good since Corals tend to be able to regenerate far faster then is generally believed.
Once this is done you can raise up the sample into a new colony in a grow out tank.
Its very simple to do with most species.
It works with anemones too but i encourage
new keeps to avoid them.

I agree corallite.
Collection for the aquarium trade often times is one of the only ways small tropical communities can have sustained revenue.
instead of people turning up there noses at this i think its more practical for these communities just to further refine there collection activities.
Like using Grow out systems to culture colonies from frags.
some places in fiji seem to have Coral farming down in a rather undamaging way.
