i served in the US ARMY,and have the highest admiration for the troops back then (on both sides).they had true testicular fortitude.i mean,to advance across a field in full view of the enemy, who is firing at you...DAMN!
The bravery and courage shown by both sides is incomprehensible.
A country forged from the heat of battle, a people born of tribulation, that is what makes your country GREAT.
In the darkest days of my nations history, ONE COUNTRY stood shoulder to shoulder with us on the battlefields of Europe, it sent its sons to die for ME and mine, and that sir is The United States of America.
May God bless you and your people. God Bless The United States of America
My AP US History teacher would play clips from this documentary and I would literally be whistling this tune for the entire week. It is a really beautiful arrangement. (I'd always get it stuck in my dad's head too haha)
I've always thought that, although the lyrics to this song are somewhat bellicose, this is the way the actual music ought to be played. A beautiful, but sad melody.
The reason why more American deaths came from the Civil War than any wars that the US fought because the way how they fought on both sides. While the weaponry was being modernized, the style of war tactics were as same as the soldiers fought in the 18th century.
@98bigbutt What throws me is how long it took most of them to adapt. I mean, I guess it's easier to see in hindsight, but a massed infantry charge against an entrenched position just seems like a bad idea no matter how you look at it.
Beautiful version of a song that is so often performed as a martial hymn. There is something very delicate and melancholy about this in this version. It feels very old-timey ... really lovely. Thanks for posting. The series is being reshown on public television this week.

Well, it didn't hurt that both sides were American, so casualties from both sides were tallied up as an American death.

@Maphysto Yet they valiantly marched into death's jaws time and time again.... a sense of duty unmatched, of courage unequaled.
