That's the sort of tempo needed for this work to "take off."I'm afraid i find most others, especially the usually wonderful Gilels much too slow. Ponti can be critiçose for all sorts of things, but in this case he serves the symphonic drive of the piece very well.
I think this is a better piece than the rambling second concerto, which seems to be something of a virtuouso showpiece. It really deserves to be played much more often in the concert hall.
I agree it should be performed more often, but I respectfully disagree over the 2nd Piano concerto. The 2nd, if performed properly, in its original version, without the dreadful Ziloti cuts--as Igor Zhukov does with Rozhdestvensky conducting the USSR RTV Symphony Orchestra (Mikhail Tcherniakovsky, violin; Victor Simon, cello) is miraculous and unforgettable. We need *more* performances of both the 2nd & 3rd Piano Concertos!
@Balancement I find the second concerto a virtuoso rather than a melodic piece; I think the composer was possibly influenced by Liszt in creating it. The best movement of the second concerto, in my humble opinion, is the lovely slow movement, which was the one idiotically cut!
Tchaikovsky was never influenced by Liszt--and again, respectfully, the 2nd is a huge piece, extraordinarily difficult to play and extraordinarily difficult to coordinate with the orchestra and the orchestral balance. *If performed correctly and in full,* the 2nd is probably one of his greatest works. The second movement, as Tchaikovsky wrote it--with the "trio" section intact--is one of the most achingly beautiful melodic moments in all of 19th century music. Find the Zhukov.
I agree, comapred the the first and third concertos and the concert fantasia in g major, the second concerto is much less beautiful. I mean it is "OK" but not nearly as beautiful as the 1st and 3d, and the concerto fantasia i g major for piano and orchestra. I guess that is just my opinion

@robfuturemd The second is a great virtuoso work - and that's how it should be viewed in my opinion. Still a very powerful piece.

I much prefer this piece as the concerto it was originally intended to be rather than the reconstructed symphony no.7.
