  • Love the video thanks for uploading such a rare beauty, didn't like the music though some old Hawaiian tunes would have been better.

  • Awesome! Be back in Waikiki tomorrow

  • I actually have the 2 pair of vans that were named after him

  • I like surfing. thanksto the uplopader of this wonderful video

  • Thanks Roy,

I think where the film fades off at 2:58, right after that the 'Duke' has a Wahine climb on his shoulders. I have seen that in other video.

I like at 3:30 where there are three people on the same board before the wave leaves them behind. Also, At 3:50 where the one person steps onto the board on the right and then there are two on the same board. Then both jump off.

Ah!! Those were the days.... Mahalo nui loa, Bob

  • I have this same footage! I was impressed that my grandma's cousin got such good film of surfers but I now see he spliced in a professional film with his own film. Mine has a March 1928 date on it, so the professional part probably was filmed before then.

  • Rare find! Unreal.

  • Thanks for uploading! Duke Kahanamoku is a legend! What a beautiful man!

  • Cheers tentoes, redwood's a nice board building material all the best for the alaia shaping :)

  • Roy, thanks for posting this. Those Blake "Kook Boxes" are nifty. I recently bought a modern (hollow) wood board, and I'm inspired to shape a Alaia. I have access to some big redwood, so I'll make it out of that. It should prove to be an interesting experience.

  • C'est tres amusante!

  • I love Duke!!!! He's my main man!

  • c'est mega vieu ce truc !

  • Well spotted, that is in fact the person here typing on his 17 foot redwood olo. . . surfing of another Pacific Island at a later date.

  • On the wave surfed on min 2 ish, he past next to shortboards, there were shortboards and acuatic cameras on that time?

  • The water footage in Hawaii shown was probably taken from a canoe using a camera without a water housing.

  • Love longboards. Thanks for sharing this awesome vid.

  • Cool...what's the name of the song that starts at 1:17 ? Thanks

  • Thanks, we can't find the name of the track unfortunately

  • @LoveWaveSurfer think I found that track.... Artist: Bliss Track: Manvantara Album: Quiet Letters

  • tanks for this video !!!

  • Hi Rahmeish, thankyou for that insight I don't know much about Mr Freeth, time to do some research !

  • Not meaning any disrespect for the duke and acknowleding his almost single handedly spreading the phenononom/religion that is wave riding but i think it was George Freeth the dukes mentor is the one who shoud have the titl of the father of surfing , well in the modern era anyway

  • I agree.

George Freeth introduced surfing, once more to the world, many don't know him compared to the Duke. Both helped with the return of surfing though.

  • Thankyou for your opinion

  • That was awesome! Duke was a legend!! I travel to Hawaii alot and I dig the statue of Duke at the beach along Kalakaua Ave. I love everything about Hawaii, including the people.

  • OMG i loved it! mahalo for sharing it!

  • the king *

  • Amazing footage

  • its so sad that duke died. at least that they have a tribute to him in waikiki

  • Nice board you have there. HeHe

  • It looks like the camaraman-woman was hiding the cam incase they got caught and boiled to death and eaten lol

  • Lol the last case of cannibalism reported in NZ was in 1912, we are not out of the woods yet !

  • This is very historic footage. I never went to Hawaii until 1985 and it must have been so beautiful in Duke,s time. Rest in peace Duke.

  • hey man where u get this footage ???

    salute !!!

  • It's an old Castle films video promoting Hawaii, courtesy of Mr John Mellor

  • There is a tribute to Duke at Huntington Beach in the Duke's Restaurant, a statue across the street in front of HSS and a bust with an exhibit at the International Surfing Museum a couple of block inland from there.

  • haha I stumbled on this vid and its roy stewart...heh nice one. Looks pretty crowded, good for sharing waves tho i guess.

  • While I think the footage in the video is great, I question the musical choice. It should have been Hawaiian, not techno dance.

  • Wish Duke was still around...

  • unbelievable! great footage.

  • Its July 7 1898.

  • Well spotted Khanamoku :)

  • I'd my research :P

  • Duke Kahanamoku is(nt) an Americam he's born before Hawaii became an Amercican State.

He's born in Honolulu, August 24 1890 and Hawaii was in July 7 1998, official a state of the USA.

On April 30 1900, the Organic Act made Duke Kahanamoku an American citizen.

  • that´s amazing!!!

  • correct me if i'm wrong but that is a Castle film called HAWAII, a very common film..and i don't think there is any surfing of Duke in it. yes it's him in the beginning but not surfing, maybe he brother, i'd have to look closely at my copy..

  • Yes that's the film, it was a travel advertisement I believe, it looks like the Duke, but then again quite a few muscular Hawaiian beach boys there, perhaps you can tell if he's there or not ?

  • the beauty of waikiki is gone.....at least we can remember it through footage like this.

mahalo very much and thank you nui loa

  • Hi supabunka, the soundtrack is several different tracks, not exactly sure which ones sorry, by the way fawkyou123 and jujutek I don't think the Duke was about racial hatred.

  • wats the soundtrack. cool music.

  • i agree.. how can u say american when he is HAWAIIN 100%! Hawaii is stolen land.... give it back.

  • fuck that not american only hawaiian

  • a real american/hawaiian legend

  • this is where it is at. forget plastic epoxy and poison let ride wood!

  • its so sad that duke died. at least that they have a tribute to him in waikiki
