I dislike how he claims God put Marcus anywhere or that Marcus wasigned with a monotheistic Jehova. Marcus wasn't Christian and the Christian God doesn't exist anymore than the Roman gods did
Thank you for posting all of your video's, its so rare to find lecture's on philosophy, yet alone a giant like Plutarch, once again thatnks for posting...
But, but but........Marcus Aurelius was not a christian, he was a pagan and didn't worship 'God'(Yaweh) Is this bloke for real? Is he really a university professor? I know its been hosted in the same room as Garret Fagan's lectures but these are not really in the same league.
@mattyk722 The idea that MA recieved knowledge "a Deo" from God, Deum, would not be a heretical statement to the Romans. Plenty of Romans would refer to God in the singular to refer to any God.
Plenty of Roman cults and oracles claimed a single God at this time, late in the Empire, including those of (especially) Apollo, Bacchus, Mithras, Jupiter and plenty others.
Consider also that MA was a STOIC, he would have looked at Deum + deorum as one with nature as unity, essentially 'God' singular.
@mattyk722 I have enjoyed watching this series (and thanks to MagisterJacobs for all his efforts in uploading these lecture series) but this guy seems to pull his lectures straight from the heroic histories of outdated middle school history textbooks, and agreed he does not rank in the same league as Fagan who clearly grasped his subject and offered analysis not just anecdotes. That said, at least this guy is better than 99% of the output from the History Channel.
