definitely agree with LD. there's degrees of relationships that are evident in how far out of our way we go to interact. the mall for example, see people i know all the time there. some of them i stop, catch up, and maybe use that time to book some other event with the person. others i politely acknowledge and move on. it has always been reflective of the type of relationship i had with that given person.

Most of the time I carry a newspaper with me, so when I run into someone at the train and they sit down next to me, I can do a one-to-two minute stop and chat, then offer them the paper. If they refuse, I can just say "sorry, I have work to do, let me know if you change your mind about that paper" or something to that effect..

Stop and chat is horrible when you really don't want to. But at least you can just say you are busy and go away. Meeting people you know on the train or plane is much worse. You might have to sit next to someone you barely know and don't like and you gotta keep talking for hours. That is awkward, especially when you have run out of things to talk about after two minutes.
