go ahead and replace the spring yourself. Just last month I got some drill bits, melted down some gold,and replaced my own tooth filling. You can do anything today just by watching a youtube video. Of course my tooth fell out afterwards, but it was a bad tooth anyways.

Probably they are just trying to keep you from hurting yourself when you try and fix the thing yourself! Why don't you call someone local to have a look at it?
