I miss EQ 1, apparently the next EQ, dubbed EQ Next right now, is supposed to be a throwback to the original. The devs say they are taking going to use a modified version of free realms engine but keep game play as close to the original as possible. Wonder if that will actually happen instead of them making an MMO that holds your hand :D

Ah yes. I've spent hours hunting in Rathe Mnts. So much fun. My brother was a Druid and he'd kite the Giants while I, the Mage, blasted them from the tower on top of the main hill. Good times, for sure.

I miss the sound effects, and blocky graphics. but hell we didn't know much better than that at the time. Its really awesome seeing other people sharing the same kind of memories. It was amazing times, and memories that will live on. This was the father of todays MMO. EQ forever.

@mariobros112 It is up, yes. But not free to play. But if you buy it you will get like 20 expansions or something, so I fail to see how it can't be worth it if you are interested. I am myself playing EQII and I like it a lot, despite some flaws in design, and pretty bad framerate for weird reasons.
@stevepcb Float. There are some NPCs that float in Everquest 2 after last expansion, so I suppose it will become possible there too one day, and if not, then the NPCs are there to celebrate it.

Don't know why (or maybe I do), but EQ1 always felt like more of a living, breathing alternate world than all of the MMOs that came after it. Something was lost when developers tried to streamline the genre for a more casual audience. Of course, MMOs are making a ton more money now than they were back then, so I doubt that's going to change any time soon.

@xkruulx The *Original* Development team for WoW consisted largely of EQ players. This was no secret. The Dev team for WoW needed a perfect perspective for an online world interaction. Since EQ done it first and Warcraft was solely a Real Time Strategy game they need that perspective to bridge the gap between the two.
While they wasn't working with the Dev team for EQ, they worked with the players from EQ. -Kud

considering it came out about 4 years prior than wow and set the stepping stones for all mmorpg's it was ground breaking and every bit of an adventure.

I don't really know how to explain it. There aren't any videos on youtube that show them, and I lost all my screenshots from back in the EQ days so I can't show them either. The best I can describe them - Imagine dwarfs in EQ, beards and all. The hill giants had faces like that, but more hill gianty, LOL. they had weapons and different looking clothes. This video was after they changed EQ's graphics a couple times though.
I still remember the days with my necro when I would have bag fulls of mandolins from killing bards. Would stop by the Rathe Mtns to charm those giant skellies and give them a mandolin then it would be a huge mandolin on a giant skellie heh.
The thing is that Blizzard has an incredible art team, so the art direction allows them to do some pretty wild stuff with a 5 year-old engine. SOE never really had that, if you ask me.
I agree. Other games may be pretty (EG Vanguard), bu the game play really really sucks. Not to mention some games (EG WoW) are ruined more by the player base than the actual game itself.
@Vekkuza Amen. Everquest had such a special aspect to it. I love WoW and have played it since 2005 when I left Eq, but I so badly miss the comaraderie that EQ had as well as the learning curve. In EQ if you didn't get smarter, get better at your class, you died and lost xp...You didn't advance. You had to get better. I miss a lot from EQ. =)

Wow is good for PvP , not having to go and look for your corpse ( i.e. corpse run for those who know what I am talking about), and yea the graphics may be a bit better, BUT once you have actually earned your epic ( no i dont mean the shortcut way or soloing raid mobs, I mean really earning it), then it is hard to just walk away and let the toon rot.I preordered EQ when it came out and I still play it when I am tired of the childish arguing and whining in trade chat in Wow.
EverQuest was the best till it came out with all the expansions... it was like after DoN expansion all the good things from the other expansions were useless....... man i missed the days of PoP and below...........=( now i play Perfect World so much better and its free
EQ was the first epic adventure MMO, but the first MMO that gave you an epic community feeling was UO. Both were awesome games, and you can't really compare them to each other since they did different things. UO let you exist in a world and craft your own being in that world while heavily interacting with others, Everquest sent you on epic journeys more like a traditional RPG.
Miss this game a lot. Its a shame no one plays much anymore. I tried playing again a couple of months back but everything is so much easier now then I remember. I got into WoW after though, but I'll never forget EQ.

I've recently started playing 'classic' EQ1 after trying every other MMO out there from LORTO, COH, EVE and WHO. EQ1 still beats them all in terms of depth, challenge and fun. Simply put EQ1 is the best MMO ever made.
Don't forget that this video isnt from 2001 back when most people killed Hill Giants. killing a RED hill giant as a classic EQ mage was not very easy back then.... it was impossible.

@Vekkuza Amen. Everquest had such a special aspect to it. I love WoW and have played it since 2005 when I left Eq, but I so badly miss the comaraderie that EQ had as well as the learning curve. In EQ if you didn't get smarter, get better at your class, you died and lost xp...You didn't advance. You had to get better. I miss a lot from EQ. =)

Wow is good for PvP , not having to go and look for your corpse ( i.e. corpse run for those who know what I am talking about), and yea the graphics may be a bit better, BUT once you have actually earned your epic ( no i dont mean the shortcut way or soloing raid mobs, I mean really earning it), then it is hard to just walk away and let the toon rot.I preordered EQ when it came out and I still play it when I am tired of the childish arguing and whining in trade chat in Wow.

EverQuest was the best till it came out with all the expansions... it was like after DoN expansion all the good things from the other expansions were useless....... man i missed the days of PoP and below...........=( now i play Perfect World so much better and its free

EQ was the first epic adventure MMO, but the first MMO that gave you an epic community feeling was UO. Both were awesome games, and you can't really compare them to each other since they did different things. UO let you exist in a world and craft your own being in that world while heavily interacting with others, Everquest sent you on epic journeys more like a traditional RPG.

Miss this game a lot. Its a shame no one plays much anymore. I tried playing again a couple of months back but everything is so much easier now then I remember. I got into WoW after though, but I'll never forget EQ.

I've recently started playing 'classic' EQ1 after trying every other MMO out there from LORTO, COH, EVE and WHO. EQ1 still beats them all in terms of depth, challenge and fun. Simply put EQ1 is the best MMO ever made.
