ze germans had the manpower/ability to smash through the american line of defence the whole time(spearhead tacic). For whatever reason the germans chose to target certain areas of the defensive line with sporadic artillery fire, enabeling the americans to move troops to and from targeted areas accordingly. In acctuallity the town was bypassed by initial forces, thus allowing the americans to set up defensive positions.

The Germans fought valiently & bravely at the unit level, but they really were done wrong by their leadership. And there was at least one high level courtmarshall for cowardace...they had chance to overrun Bastogne b/4 Dec. 24th but failed to marshall forces effectively. McCauliff however, was the hero for using relative rag-tag defense to great effect...that's the history of it.  Once past Dec. 25th, it was slugfest the Germans couldn't win...a waste of resources, hastening end of the war.

yea daniels right, the town was called Foy. the germans had taken it i think the night before and wer using artillery to call in on the men. it coodve been so much more succesfull if Cpt. Spiers had been originally in command instead of Lt. Dike, who froze and did a very poor job
