I remember when these nasty little sebaceous cysts were crawling around by the millions in the 1970s. It was well known these things blew up faster than the Firestone tires they rode on. To drive one was asking for a Death Wish.
spend money on your Comercials , but people were buring to death in these cars ... you new this car had this peoblem , but you would do anything about it , till a reporter went to congress,
and the sad facts came out that you new there was a problem with the gas tanks , and people died because of you greed for profits over life. Sick
I remember the Pinto getting some bad, but commical, press from Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show in the mid- to late 70s. They showed a picture of this car bursting into flames, supposedly speeding around a racetrack during a ficticious sporting event, "the Pinto 500".
' These giant fans wip up winds that could cause trouble 4 some little cars' Right about that one..I imagine they would cause real 'trouble' for a certain ' little car' blowing all that fuel vapor from its ruptured tank everywhere.
I worked at a Mobil station on the MassPike back in 1975. I can remember like yesterday a woman with a frikin' Vega- 'Fill it up?' I say. 'No, just check the damn oil on this piece of shit, you wanna buy it, I hate this car!' Didn't need gas, the damn crap engine burned more oil than gas... now with $4 gas and all the Ford and Chevy behemoths languishing on lots I shake my head and say- did they not learn anything over the last 30 years?
Nope, they didn't learn, and 30 years later they're paying for it. It was all about the money. The executives at the company didn't care how good the cars the company was producing and the reputation, as long as they were making money they were happy. This is the foreign market has done well in the last 30 years. They made quality cars, and that's why the reccession hasn't hurt them as badly as the Big 3.
GM made the same evil decision with the Chevy Corvair. The Corvair's swing axle rear caused so many flipovers yet GM refused to put a $15 sway bar which would've prevented the axle from tucking under from hard cornering. Only after death, injury, massive lawsuits and Nader's book, Unsafe At Any Speed, did GM completely redo the rear suspension and fix the problem in 1965.
Of course, by that time, it was too late. The Corvair was already tainted by a bad reputation and not many people would buy it out of concern, despite the fact that the problem was fixed.
It's supposedly an internal corporate memo with a cost analysis between recalling the cars and fixing them or paying off the litigations. Ford leadership, unfortunately, chose to pay off litigations, citing lower cost. A very cold blooded and unwise way to do business.
Ford obviously didn't have the wisdom to realize that their main source of revenue were people and if the memo were to get out, it would taint Ford's reputation for years as it showed they essentially didn't care about them.
ford did recall many pintos , it was 1978 or 79 not sure , had a 73 sedan , 4 speed 2.0l as first car , they changed filler neck , and put plastic sheild in front of tank , free , recalled

The infamous Pinto may have that minor issue with the gas tanks of pre-1977 models, but at least the engines did not self-destruct like their bow-tied competition with those aluminum blocks. It's been a long time since I last saw a Chevy Vega around town, but I still occasionally see a Pinto still on the road. The Pinto may not be one of Ford's better ideas, but at least they're not a total disaster.
It seems that every new fuel effecient car from the 70's-early 80's had problems. Notice though how it was Detroit iron. I'm pretty sure Henry Ford, the Dodge Brothers, and all the origional owners of the companies must have been spinning in their graves in the 70's. For the last 30 years American cars have been given a bad name and it's time to change that. I'm not hating on foriegn cars but being an American I'd like to see reliable U.S. cars again. Not boring plastic toys on wheels.
Your information is wrong. The best American cars were made between 1900-1968. After that the quality started to go downhill. The foreign market began to become popular by the late '70s. In honest truth, the Ford company's quality was the worst in the '70s and '80s. An '82 Accord is much better quality than An '82 fairmont. You have the right to your opinion, if you prefer Fords over Hondas that's your decsicion.
no thats not true how many 82 fairmonts are on the road today compared to 82 accords. the accords turned to rust along time ago. quality control was almost nonexistant in the 50s compared to the 70s and 80s. Look at the 57 dodge or the 59 ford but then compare those to the horrid imports of the time. People have been brainwashed by leftist drivel for too long the fact is that the american auto industry was forced to implement tons of standards in a very short time by the federal goverment.
There have been no early '80s Fairmonts in my neighborhood in a long time. There have been a couple of early '80s Honda's though. What you said about the rust problem is true, but it happened to all the cars from that era. Also the imports weren't "horrid" during the '50s. Japan's cars were low quality because of WWII and the only other bad import of the time was the Renault Dauphine. Mercedes, Volkswagon and Citroen sent some pretty good cars here in the late '50s and '60s.
volkswagens have always been pieces of sht and the rabbit didn't help any. yes a bug is a cute little nazi mobile but quality control of it was lacking horribly. Mercedes has always made a good car. Did you forget about fiats? Pieces of italian poop. How about jaguars? Rusty electrical problem ridden crap mobiles.
What you said about Jaguars is the best description for American cars during the '70s. The Comet, Maverick, Pinto and Vega are pieces of junk, the Pinto especially. Ford refused to retool the factory to fix the gast tank and door handel problem, plus all those cars rusted away and it is a rare sight to see any of those cars, rusted or restored. Like I keep saying, good American cars were made before 1968 with the exception of the Chrysler, Lincoln and Cadillac.
The vega was a huge piece of junk the gremnlin and the pinto were better than other small cars at the time. The fix for the pinto was a 3$piece it wasn't about retooling it was about being retarded and ford got whacked for it. Once again you go on a rant about how good american cars were made before 1968. Is that a magic number? I live in Maryland and there are plenty of 70s american cars around here. haven't seen a rice grinder from then in ages.
I really should say 1961. The reason I say '68 in general is because the cars American cars were not improved between the late '60s through the early '80s. The body styles may have changed but the engine and frame stayed the same for nearly two decades. My dad should know, he owned a '68 Cutlass, in which he almost replaced with an '80 Buick but because of the reason I mentioned above, he bought a '79 Accord, and has bought only Honda's ever since.
Uh what 60s cutlass has the same frame as an early 80s buick? All the gm cars were redisigned in 77 and 78 to be smaller and more fuel effecient. The exceptions to that were the corvette (1984) and the camaro/firebird(1982) the gm x bodies /nova/astre/apollo 1980 and then the j cars Monza/sunbird/ which were replaced in 81.
Also, the American cars from the '70s were not low quality because of little time to meet government standards. It was because they were too cheap to spend money on fully improving their cars. They would meet the minimum requirements to save as much money as they could, cutting corners to save even more money. Rather than improving everything, they just added whatever little adjustment was required. This is why the imports have done well for the last 35 years, they had reliability and quality.
They sure did fully improve their cars. They met all the regulations and surpssed them in many ways. But because of imprending fuel standards which were thrust upon them then killed at hte last minute. A very advanced car like the chevy citation for example didn't have no time to be tested. American cars were full of innovations way before other manufactures made them. The imports did good because of unfair tariffs which let them be sold for less than american equivalent models.
It wasn't unfair tarriffs, there was a gas crisis in '73 and '79 and the majority of the Big Three's products were big heavy gas guzzling V8 powered sedans and sports cars. The foriegn market had smaller more fuel effecient cars that were better quality. The Big Three didn't learn then either and just built cars for profits spending as little as possible on improvments and 30 years after the second gas crisis they just figured out that cutting costs will and has hurt sales.
Thats true about the fuel economy not the quality. The other stuff you are saying is so far off the deep end of malarky it dosen't deserve comment. As for innovation jap cars from the 70s got higher mpg than they do now. so much for advancement.
The only reason the MPG when down on Japanese cars is because they make them bigger with more powerful engines. They're still able to get better MPG than the other makes. Honda has some of the best cars in terms of fuel economy. The Fit gets better mileage than the Smart, and the upcoming Insight supposedly gets the same MPG as the Prius and costs less. Another thing, you have to admit that the American cars from the '20s-'50s are far superior in style and quality to the cars of the '70s.
no the fit does not get better gas mieage than the smart what are you basing that on? The fit even get bigger this year. I would rather own a fit than a smart a smart should be called a retard. I personally like the mid to late 50s cars styling. I would not say there quality was any better. Except for Dusenbergs and cadillacs and big cars like that the cars of the 20s and early 30s were too primitive to really count as styling. I think you just personally don't like the styles of the 70s.
If it doesn't get better miliage, it gets the same from what I've heard. It proves that Honda makes some of the best quality cars. The Fit is bigger than the Smart and can achieve the same MPG. When I'm talking about quality in cars old and new, I'm talking about build quality. The build quality of America cars from the 1890's to the early 1960's was much better than the cars built from the late 1960's to the 2000's.
Once again what are you basing this on what your dad told you? Cars from the 50s used more steel than modern ones but that dosent make them better built. Any american car built in the 2000s is better built than a car from the 50s the precision machinery and stuff used to make them is far more advanced the qualiy control techniqes far better.
In some ways the modern cars are better quality because they don't break down as much or rust. All I'm trying to say is that American cars from the 1890's-1960's were far superior to the cars from the 1970's-1990's, both in styling and Build quality. Come on, the bland box look of the '70s and '80s can't beat the Art-Deco styling of the '30s or the rocket ship styling of the '50s. I will admit however, the 1972 Buick Riviera Boattail is a work of art, and the '70s Cadillacs are cooler the '00s.
well you would be way wrong about build quality and styling is your own personal preference. I like a 57 Tbird for example but I'll take a 78 Tbird over 65 anyday. I will agree with you the lamest decades stylewise would be the 80s and 90s. But several of the cars from those decades would not hesitate to own and I am also including foriegn styling which has always been subpar compared to american. Some examples of 80s american I would love to own 87 T bird or Monte carlo ss.
The '57 Thunderbird is another piece of automotive art. The T-birds from the '90s and the "retro" T-bird from 2005 are nothing compared to the ones from the '50s-'70s. There are only a handful of '80s cars I like.
Are you sure that's a 1973 ad? In '73 the 5 mph bumpers appeared on US cars, and this doesn't have one. Looks more like a '71 or '72. Maybe I'm wrong, though.
It's a shame most people didn't take the Pinto seriously, and treated them like throw-away vehicles, without investing barely a tad of routine maintenance. Mechanically, they were one of the most dependable vehicles ever developed. :)
Pintos catch fire easily, now that is a myth from the 1970s. Any car will catch fire when slammed into at 70mph, even a Pinto. Duh. When America needs a better idea, Ford puts it on wheels.
Some Pinto's blew up in flames in far smaller speeds than 70 mph, wasn't there the one famous incident in California, Minnesota or something in the early 70's where the speed was only about 30 mph..? Nothing against Ford, I've had one myself, but they were known to have issues with gas tanks in more models than just Pinto.
Are you serious? That wasn't a myth. The 1971 Ford Pinto caught fire when hit from the rear at speeds 21 mph and up. Ford even knew this and tested it before putting the product on the market. People were burned to death and got trapped in the car. Try doing a google search for Pinto fire. Ford paid out millions of dollars in lawsuits.
I read that somewhere too. It's one of the reasons Ford, GM, and Chrysler are struggling now. Reputation meant nothing to the companies in the 1970's and '80s. All the execs cared about was getting more money.
Well its good to see someone other than me liked these cars.Ive loved them since i was 11 yrs old, thats when the 71s came out.I bought a 78 brand new and drove the livin crap out of it and didnt hurt it a bit, well, maybe the clutch, lol.pretty good car for 3500 bucks new off the floor.Stupid pontiacs and shit were 6000 bucks at that time.
Worst pos ever. It was one of my top ten worst cars on the road. Exploding gas tanks and all.

The '57 Thunderbird is another piece of automotive art. The T-birds from the '90s and the "retro" T-bird from 2005 are nothing compared to the ones from the '50s-'70s. There are only a handful of '80s cars I like.
1. 1987 Honda Accord
2. 1986 Volvo 240
3. 1984 AMC Eagle
4. 1982 DeLorean
5. 1989 Jeep Wagoneer

Are you sure that's a 1973 ad? In '73 the 5 mph bumpers appeared on US cars, and this doesn't have one. Looks more like a '71 or '72. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

5 mph bumpers showed up in 74, not 73. I should know seeing I have a 1971, 1972, and 2 1973 Pintos

I read somewhere they actually did a cost benefit analysis and they thought it would cost less for lawsuit payouts than redesigning the fuel tank...

I read that somewhere too. It's one of the reasons Ford, GM, and Chrysler are struggling now. Reputation meant nothing to the companies in the 1970's and '80s. All the execs cared about was getting more money.

both vega and pinto catch fire easily, vega is engine problem while pinto is fuel tank, when somethings hit behind pinto then KABOOM!!!

Good little car too! A little issue with the fuel tank but better than the Chevrolet Vega.

Smaller more economical 4.cyl = Good
More reliable European engines = Definetly Good
The Pinto probably being the orginal design and Vega being a wannabe = Good
Yes the Pinto is better than the Vega.
