  • I am a HKese, 41 years old. I hate Macau as our family in earlier days lost a great deal of money in gambling. I understand it is not fair to say that .. but i really hate Macau. What it get worse ... it is now a real city of crime. Thanks for this clips anyway. It makes me know that Macau already got its name ... Gambling colony .. .in the 30s. So bad Macau !

  • I like this video

  • those were the good old days, british Hong Kong

  • coal burning steamer, smoke is so black,no wonder the smog in h.k. is so bad

  • sheesh the smoke coming from the vessel in 10:00. No wonder hong kong is always polluted.

  • I am surprised by the amount of black smoke that come out of the ship's chimney.

  • 現在的香港不美

  • @tingpepper

not even good enough for human living

  • ah the good old days, when a cold could kill, sanitation lacking, corruption rife, common sense not so common.....just like now.

but the eggs tasted better and if one were privileged one could enjoy brilliant air quality, opium and concubines.

  • 70 yrs later we are the BANKER of the USA

  • I was HK born, but I don't relish the old colonial days.

    I think I am normal.

A documentary film is OK for record of history.

HK today is much more attractive. I love first world income and modernity.

  • Agreed.

  • Great vedio which show the old Hong Kong.

  • except a few moderately-racist comment and angles(which was understoodable as it was a 1930s production), this film was a treasure footage indeed.

  • What goes around comes around; all this afganistan products found a ready market in the US & UK

  • 不知有沒有同是香港的朋友在看,如果若干地標建築可以保存到今日,香港會更美

  • @eddielung31 old buildings too ugly and haunting

  • the triad gangs too back then. wow.

  • It was really a tough old days !

  • 15:29, that is a coffin for a child!! Did the cameraman happened to be around a funeral home, and that's why there were priests around...... lol

  • @ac6261

Yea. The silent movie scripts didn't mention the coffin. It seems that they didn't know what it was and just blatantly interpreted that the Buddhist 'priests' 'mingle' with crowds. LOL!

  • i wish it was still like that. it looks so crap now! i live there!!! it was so good before!!!!

  • OH Well !! they did not mention the legalized opium dens.

  • Smoking opium was illegal in the 1930s in Hong Kong.

  • The Brits are excellent in growing, trading, legalize opium in modern day history. Also, they are excellent in blunder the natural resources from all over the world. They had their days !!

  • definitely a treasurable video. Hongkongers should watch. Thanks so much for uploading, I just had a good history lesson of Hong Kong.

  • I enjoy this rare short movie. Thank you.

  • incredibly done!!

  • Very rare & true life of HK & Macau people in 1930's . Great job !

  • Wow, this must be the earliest street scene of Hong Kong on tape. This is why YouTube is great.

  • treasurable!

  • Definately valuable footage.

  • It is valuable footage for Hong Kong People to watch...

  • This vintage footage of Hong Kong was taken before the Macau - Hong Kong pier was constructed and at least 30 years before the hydrofoil. Of course long before Stanley Ho's casino ! Great . Thanks for uploading.

  • An excellent clip of old Hong Kong.Very interesting and educational.

Somehow showed the superiority of the foreigners which they had talked and treated the Chinese people liked dirt. Thank you God, time is different now !

  • Comment removed

  • Precious footage, indeed!

Who was the idiot responsible for the subtitle, though?
