@PippoDaReal wooden dummy training is not for hitting hard. That would damage the tendons of the hands and feet. It is for training body positioning in relation to the dummy as well as arm/leg accuracy. Some people do hit the dummy really hard though...which defeats it's original purpose. Why hit a dummy when you can hit a makiwara board?
@matreyia I train in Wing Chun and in my school, people that trains with a wooden dummy use the dummy to harden their limbs. I'm not saying that you're wrong, but in every wooden dummy demo i've seen, the practitioner was trying to move the dummy. Though I never trained on one (I'm 17 so it would be dangerous for my growth and I don't really have the level)
PippoDaReal, thanks for the reply. In almost every YT video I've seen, people hit the dummy hard also. That doesn't mean it is the correct use of the dummy though. Wing Chun is a soft style developed by a woman. No woman would waste her time hardening her limbs. No matter how hard they become, she will meet a man who is trained harder. So it is pointless. The secret is to overcome with other ways besides wishing that u can train ur limbs to be harder than ur unknown opponent...
There are certainly other ways to defeat an opponent who is stronger & harder than u. They are: extraordinary sensitivity of touch, supreme body positioning in relation to the enemy (like in warfare), train to "send" entire body plus earth into the opponent - instead of merely "hitting" with the weak fist & arms.
When 2 hard things collide, the harder one survives but both get damaged. When u hit water with a stick, it effortlessly absorbs and engulfs the stick...no matter how fast you hit it.
When a person says, "I practice Wing Chun", then shows that he trains to harden his limbs, or does pushups, or trains in hard chi gung...that person is actually just doing normal Gung Fu/Karate training using Wing Chun hand/arm shapes. Remember this. Wing Chun is very special, it does not kick high, does not directly oppose an enemy's punch or kick...it is sublime, overcoming with intelligence & suppleness to ride the energy/force of the enemy so that he becomes easy to deal with.
What do you think PippoDaReal? Is not a horse quick, powerful & dangerous to fight straight on? Yet even the power & strength of the magnificent horse is easily tamed and harnessed by one who is knowledgeble & calm in mind. That calm person would easily use the horse to do whatever he wanted, whether to ride it or to make it grind wheat or grains. Thus, I say, do not be fooled by hard limbs or powerful arms...rather, the true power is in understanding & correct training.
@matreyia If you are interrested in seeing a demo of someone from my school, check out KungFuMartialArtist (there is one of the videos is exclusively wooden dummy and the challenge video, which is kind of an historical video about challenges between masters in ancient China, includes a wooden dummy part). If you have any question, post them a comment. I'm only a beginer, so I don't think I could answer. BTW, thanks for the reply and sharing your knowledge with me.
