Does anyone know what is the average profit per egg-laying chicken, i.e. how much profit does a single chicken generate during its lifetime to the farms, in the USA, wether the business is based on factory farming (hundreds of thousands of chickens cramped into small spaces) - in comparison to what is shown in this video?
A lot of people assume that the opposite to cage laid eggs is free range.
The opposite to cage laid is freedom.
Now I personally think that although "free range" eggs are the best, barn laid eggs are a far better choice then caged eggs. If you can't afford the expensive free range eggs, go for the barn laid. Its a more humane choice where these birds can actually move. Imagine what it would be like to live in your car boot with 8 other people for your whole life. That's what caged animals have.
Considering the outbreak of salmonella (sp?) for production eggs I wouldn't be suprised if everyone built a small coop in their back yard and bought a few chickens for their own eggs.
Free range is a myth. Free range chickens have to come from somewhere and sadly, their lives begin in much the same way as a caged chicken, brutal & inhumane. Educate yourselves on The Free-Range Myth.
I don't think every chicken has a "brutal and inhumane" beginning, especially not in some countries depending on their laws. But even so, how is a "brutal and inhumane" beginning and then a happy life afterwards horrible compared to a "brutal and inhumane" forever?
The "free range myth" you speak of makes you sound like you don't give a shit and that caged chickens are the same as free range.
The best way is to just buy Organic eggs. They must be free range, have access to outdoors and be fed an organic diet. But of course, just stepping up to buy free range makes a big difference to the hen's quality of life, as you can see from the video.
i have had caged chickens and just recently gave em free rage and it is a much better feeling seeing how much the birds love going outside, free range is definatly the way to go
I can just imagine myself asking the guy who's paid minimum wage or even his manager where any given brands eggs come from. I know the answer, he'll check on the carton and tell me the name of the town. I t'S not only the chickens that are coopedup and processed, the people are too. Weak and unaware.
@jakecarpenter555 you are what you eat. Egg yolk is determined by the diet the birds are fed. similar to how a barley finished beef steer will have whiter fat than a corn finished steer. depending on your geographical location the egg yolks colour will differ as farmers are going to utilize the feedstuffs they have most easily available to them a farmer in the corn belt is more likely to use a corn ration than someone in a region where wheat is more economical or w/e grows in your backyard
heloo, i want to visit a chicken farm, and i live in ST Louis Missouri. so would you please recommended me where i can find a chicken farm to visit ? the other thing i am looking for a textbook for college student with more picture about chicken farm. thanks for your time.
commercial chickens are NOT kept humanly. a box at the store claimed (cage free eggs) upon visiting all the chickens were caged in extremely cramped cages and had a egg chute where the eggs would come down from making them "cage free".. someone i know bought 5 of these bird and let them range in their yard only to have them all die, because they've never been outta the cage they couldn't walk, peck the ground, very sad indeed.
Having a few hens in the backyard is beneficial on so many levels and is the best way to Not support the organization that treats animals in a inhumane way.
I used to get so annoyed by people who demanded "rights" for chickens and stupidity like that.
Well, then somehow I was talked into keeping a small flock of our own, for our eggs.
I am almost embarrassed to say now I've bonded with the chickens, and I see how much my birds love to free range daily. They are only in their pen at night, so nothing kills them.
I think all chickens should live that way, and it's disgusting and sad that to see how these factory chickens must "live".
@fuckencrazy88 We love our backyard ladies as well! Nice to know where the eggs are from, what is going into them, and that they won't be killed just because they are old. Then, I get to add a few more!
@fuckencrazy88 You should live in Florida we have rights for animals. Today it's over 90 degrees and our county animal control is out looking for dogs who don't have proper shelter, water and food. They are not taking the dogs. They are providing water food and a warning instead. They even are looking at people with backyard bird runs and cages.
@fuckencrazy88 Im right there with you, I always thought it didnt matter but ive been watching these videos recently and they have changed my mind about alot, especially the cows and horses. but it doesnt matter if they are big or small or even less intellegent than others they feel just like we do and i mean physically not emotionaly, I would love to see one of these ppl who do this to them to get treated the same way skinned, burned, beaten alive and sent to a factory at the end.
@fuckencrazy88 well i 100% support chickens to be lin iving cage-free and have outside access. Better you treat farm animals ... better stuff they produce.
just so pmarie2003 understands, the colour of the yolk of any egg, depends upon the diet of the bird. free range egg yolks may appear "a pretty dark yellow" but has nothing to do with how the bird is kept. colour is added to the egg yolks by adding a dye compound that makes the yolk more appealing to the human eye. egg yolk naturally, unless the bird is fed on corn, is a pale yellow. sorry mate. just the facts.
the diet of the chicken effect the colour alot and the strength of the shell. Free range chickens are fed a vegetarian diet so there eggs are differnt colours
Well it really depends on the supplier. In the back yard, you get a very dark almost orange yolk by feeding feeds high in beta-carotene. Just the facts. /teasingwink
Crack open a true free range/free forage egg vs. a cage produced egg. The free range egg will have a pretty dark yellow, firm yolk. The cage produced egg will be pale and sick looking. Yuk.

If you have chickens for eggs or meat and if you purchase chicken or eggs, they are raised for that purpose. These are not pets, they are food. If they are wild that's different but these birds are alive because humans allowed them to be, not because they were born out in the wild.
good for you speaking up. YES, they ARE PETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sentenience, please people. I get so sick of these people who think animals are chattel, they have no feeling, they have no worth except for their eating pleasure. Plastic people. Thanks for writing and defending love for animals.
Are you saying that chicken can only survive if there are humans? No, chickens came from the forest, they eat worms from the ground. It's only because we learned to domesticate chickens a long time ago that we're allowed to determine their fate. It doesn't matter if they were raised for food or not, at least back then they had some space to stretch.
i find it funny how ppl will spend thousands of dollars a year for their cats and dogs to be pamperd, yet the food they are going to be putting in their bodies gets not thought whatsoever. I'm not against eating animals, but WHY would you want to put a piece of meat in your mouth that has been lying in its own filth, abused and rotted away in most cases? all u have to do to see the difference in happy meat versus "manufactured" meat is lye them side by side on the butchers block.
I don't care about the eggs really but people who keep chickens in those cages are criminals. How can you do that to a living creature that has the right to be free? Just to lay eggs for you to eat? At least they have to treat them right. I just can't get it!
All i know is that I eat chicken, eggs, meat, etc. for energy. If I am getting my energy from the energy produced by the animal and that animal has been tortured, I do not want that in my body. Also, those of you who use profanity on these sites are simple minded and should be respectful of others' who might be offended. plus, you will never get your message across that way...you just sound ignorant and uneducated.
This is BS. There are NO OFFICIAL STANDARDS for free range. You're right, there's no FDA regulations on free-range requirement. Some free range just means that there's a path of grass inside a still cramped space. The only way to make sure is if you know the place that raised the chicken or take actions yourself (raising chicken, etc).
I agree with this woman's sentiments, however, some stupid fucking store manager is not going to know dick about the egg-producer's treatment of birds.
Probably not off the top of their head, but most eggs come from big operations, and enough questions are asked by now, that the manager can probably check a quick record or make a HQ call to find out.
After watching the horrors of the "Where does out food come from" documentary, I'm only going to eat meat if I know how the animal was treated when they were alive. I only ever buy free range eggs now, and rarely eat red meat.
