@maxibonbon09 Not to mention the referee. That manhandling the goalkeeper did should have been an instant send off. The Yankos free kick is one of the best you'll ever see anywhere. I'd love to find a way to get him involved with the current group but I think he's a bit busy with his business.
Average goal for an average player. His comments on Pim our second most succesful manager is so easy to say. Pim deserves a second chance if we don't make the Asian cup final then we should ask questions. Paul Wade who are you seriously? If you were a Johnny Warren or a Craig Johnson then yes we might listen to your comments!
@framkif Pim only signed to the end of the world cup and had already has a contract with the Morocco junior team prior to the World Cup. There is no 2nd chance for Pim even if we got through to the final 16 Pim was moving on after the world cup.
Damn how Argentina sucked back then. But shortly after this they almost won the World Cup again. Not many guys here in that squad though (Monzon, Batista, Ruggeri and Lorenzo only).
haha after awarding the penalty the ref does a run round the goals to avoid the argentina players. man i reckon if you pushed a ref like that these days you'd be sent off
If you ask me a dive is when you fall over without being hit. Frank was definitely taken out. Mind you, when he was hit he made sure the ref knew all about it.
As an aside, how good is Frank's mullet? Champion!!
Cont on from previous post - Our guys to a man, were playing part time in the now defunct NSL and held down full time jobs while playing for their clubs anc countries. S on that score it is a tremendous result. And we showed it was no fluke a few months later in the Olympics when we beat Yugoslavia with Dragan Stoickhovic (Red Star, Marseille and Verona) and Sreko Katanec (Sampdoria) in their side. to be continued.
Its true, this was not Argentina full strength side. But it wouldn't be correct to call it a second XI either. Many of these players would have being in Argentina's first choice team anyway. However the important thing to realise that these guys were professionals playing in the Argentine Clausura for world famous clubs such as Riverplate, Boca Juniors and Estudiantes etc etc. (Sorry my fellow posters from Argentina if I have left your club out as their are so many great Argentine football clubs
Yakamon, while I don't dispute the Eddie Thompson was a good coach. (he took us to the semi finals of the Barcelona Olympics in 92 which included defeats of Denmark and a Tomas Brolin led Sweden, as well as qualification at the expense of Netherlands)I must disagree with your assesment of Arok. He took over teh roos when they were at their lowest ebb and lost regularly to New Zealand. He instilled a lot of confidence and built up the teamwork with his club Australia approach to the team.
Yeah ur right, I actually think there was a 2-0 loss to Fiji and even an abismal 1-1 with New Caledonia recorded somewhere about 18 months before this match aswell. He was a brillian coach, just a little arrogant in his demeanour, not a gentleman like Eddie or Rale. Still I agree with you, he did work wonders for Aussie football, set the platform for Eddie the vid above proves it.
Yakoman123, the loss to Fiji that you mention was actually 18 months after this match at the beginning of the world cup qualification campaign for Italia 90, so that defeat actually occured under Frank Arok. In his defence though that was the beginning of the era of departure of our best players to European clubs.
Before the Olympics we had David Mitchell adn Eddie Krencivic in europe. After the Olympics Frank Farina went to Club Brugge, Arnold to Roda JC, Slater to RC Lens Charlie Yankos to Paok Salonika and Vlado Bozinovski to Sporting Lisbon. In addition to that Kalantzis and Hristodulu went to Panathanaikos and Patikas to AEK Athens. So that was a big factor in the poor performance of that campaign as no Australian manager had had to deal with that before.
Hahaha! Look at Frank Arok, dancing like a clown - what a joke. Now Eddide Thompson (seen quietly bemused in the background to Arok's left) there was a brilliant coach for the socceroos and a good man.
As an Englishman, I'd like to know why Football has take so long to catch on in Oz. You lot are almost as bad as the Yanks, when it comes to appreciating the beautiful game.
unlike england we have a local game called australia rules football which has much more popularity. we also have rugby which is also extremely popular. soccer/football finds it very difficult to compete with these other codes...thats why our world cup qualification was important because more people realised how good australia could be.
yeh but only on pay tv which is slowly gaining popularity particularly as more aussies are joining EPL...but the Champions league is shown on free to air..ppl dont watch both because the time differences make it a huge hassle.
Ok guys...this wasn't Argentina's national team. First, where is Maradona in this game?
There is only a couple of players from that world champion team in 1986(Luis Islas and Olarticoechea) we lose this game because we played with not even our second team...it was the Argentina's third team...only players from the national league, very very youngs, like Simeone for example, it was his 3rd match with the national shirt.
Please country-men it was soooo penalty, only Garre can do such of thing.
I am Argentine and yes while u are correct this was by far NOT Argentina's starting lineup, or squad for that matter, it was still none the less Argentina, defending world champoins, and soon to be runners up of Italia 90' aswell.
With or without their full strength team (no Valdano, Balbo, Caniggia, Burruchaga, Basualdo to name a few & needless to mention Maradona) in the context of 1988, even if it had been a 3rd division clubside from Argentina wearing the albiceleste, a loss to the Socceroos in that era was STILL completely unacceptable and inexplicable, especially a convincing win of such magnitude; 4-1!(bear in mind we held an almost full strength Brasil to a 0-0 draw earlier in the tournament. Credit to the Aussies
Maradona was at pre-season training with Napoli, he didnt get suspended until 1991. I'm not disputing that this was a "fair and square" victory for the socceroos, don't think anyone here has. Behind both WC Qualifications, I agree with you, def 3rd best moment ever for Aussie football.
"I say this in the nicest possible way, but Frank Farina was one of the biggest whingers I ever played with or against," Kosmina told News Ltd papers at the weekend.
"He was always moaning. Whether it was right or wrong he'd always have a whinge. Not much has changed."
farina is the biggest and best example of why the game floundered for so long in oz. hes up there with arnie and ange for the greats that completely ruined the game award.
that was a dive in the box really, but they still won regardless of that, and even if it's said that argentina was too angry to play after that, it was still 2-1
i rekon we've always had a good team. itas only translated to world cup now but we've always had a fighting spirit and some skills to go along. our old socceroos should be remembered as battlers and good footballers
this was the game. the game that started my love affair with soccer, especially australian soccer. a love affair that will one day culminate in our winning the world cup. and why not. it wouldnt be the last time we'd beat a current world champion either.
