@framkif Pim only signed to the end of the world cup and had already has a contract with the Morocco junior team prior to the World Cup. There is no 2nd chance for Pim even if we got through to the final 16 Pim was moving on after the world cup.

Its true, this was not Argentina full strength side. But it wouldn't be correct to call it a second XI either. Many of these players would have being in Argentina's first choice team anyway. However the important thing to realise that these guys were professionals playing in the Argentine Clausura for world famous clubs such as Riverplate, Boca Juniors and Estudiantes etc etc. (Sorry my fellow posters from Argentina if I have left your club out as their are so many great Argentine football clubs

Yakamon, while I don't dispute the Eddie Thompson was a good coach. (he took us to the semi finals of the Barcelona Olympics in 92 which included defeats of Denmark and a Tomas Brolin led Sweden, as well as qualification at the expense of Netherlands)I must disagree with your assesment of Arok. He took over teh roos when they were at their lowest ebb and lost regularly to New Zealand. He instilled a lot of confidence and built up the teamwork with his club Australia approach to the team.

Yeah ur right, I actually think there was a 2-0 loss to Fiji and even an abismal 1-1 with New Caledonia recorded somewhere about 18 months before this match aswell. He was a brillian coach, just a little arrogant in his demeanour, not a gentleman like Eddie or Rale. Yakoman123, the loss to Fiji that you mention was actually 18 months after this match at the beginning of the world cup qualification campaign for Italia 90, so that defeat actually occured under Frank Arok. In his defence though that was the beginning of the era of departure of our best players to European clubs.

Before the Olympics we had David Mitchell adn Eddie Krencivic in europe. After the Olympics Frank Farina went to Club Brugge, Arnold to Roda JC, Slater to RC Lens Charlie Yankos to Paok Salonika and Vlado Bozinovski to Sporting Lisbon. In addition to that Kalantzis and Hristodulu went to Panathanaikos and Patikas to AEK Athens. So that was a big factor in the poor performance of that campaign as no Australian manager had had to deal with that before.

unlike england we have a local game called australia rules football which has much more popularity. we also have rugby which is also extremely popular. soccer/football finds it very difficult to compete with these other codes...thats why our world cup qualification was important because more people realised how good australia could be.

There is only a couple of players from that world champion team in 1986(Luis Islas and Olarticoechea) we lose this game because we played with not even our second team...it was the Argentina's third team...only players from the national league, very very youngs, like Simeone for example, it was his 3rd match with the national shirt.

With or without their full strength team (no Valdano, Balbo, Caniggia, Burruchaga, Basualdo to name a few & needless to mention Maradona) in the context of 1988, even if it had been a 3rd division clubside from Argentina wearing the albiceleste, a loss to the Socceroos in that era was STILL completely unacceptable and inexplicable, especially a convincing win of such magnitude; 4-1!(bear in mind we held an almost full strength Brasil to a 0-0 draw earlier in the tournament.
