I think the germans fitted the barbarian stereotype, because they killed the followers of the roman army in the teutoburg forest, that meant civilians, including women, and children. if they were any better, they would have spared them, but they did not. I feel if Rome kep the initiative, and conquered germany after the massacre such as under germanicus, and Corabulo, and Marcus Auerlius, among others then the two world wars would not have happened.
@imperatorcaesar100 dont be so stupid! Danes and visi-goths would have invadeded the weakened roman territory and germany would still be pretty much the same as it was in WW1 and 2.also romans were equally as barbaric when it came to slaying civilians and domestic creatures as was that tribe!
@imperatorcaesar100 so stupid! In each sentence are at least 2 hist. mistakes: Why dont you better watch soap operas - which better fit with you IQ then ancient history!
@Amonalexander You have spelling problems, and are obviously biased because you are from germany. Thanks to people like hitler, Germany has a bad reputation which will take centuries to remove. I am giving an opinion which is an educated guess, what do you know about ancient history besides looking at ruins? also why do you take so long to reply to my comment?
@imperatorcaesar100 Your thinking is infantile on so many levels- I don't know why I'm even responding. You are judging ancient people based on your modern liberal western value system- not very smart.Secondly, you should be aware the Romans themselves would happily slaughter women and children in times of war- this was the norm.Third- your "feelings' are irrelevant to the study of history.Your comment about the world wars is really immature.I recommended you don't focus your energies on history.
Varus and the Romans were betrayed by some of their germanic allies (e.g. the by German nationalists so-beloved Arminius grew up in Rome an was supported by the Romans. He became a Roman citizen and officer!). Because of the selfish power struggle of some germanic tribes, Germania had to renounce to civilisation and peace for many centuries .
@junioreconomist well thats well known but he was taken as a HOSTAGE to rome and nevertheless ner forgot his ancestors and roots..and as for the romans...well they didnt deserve sth else did they?
@mitsokostas Who told you that Arminius never forgot his ancestors and roots? There is no reliable historical source about that! And what do you understand under a "HOSTAGE"? At that time it was usual to give hostages to guarantee a treaty between two parties. Rome an the tribe of the Cherusci had arranged a traety of peace which Arminius broke. Can you explain me why Arminius' brother Flavus and other relatives remained loyal to Rome? And why was Arminius killed by members of his own tribe?
@junioreconomist whew now thats a load of questions! 1st: arminius as killed (by marcomanni not his own tribe) because he wanted to unify all of the tribes uder his rule which made him appar as a monarch like varus was and also german tribes eclected their own leader (warlord) and disposed him brutally if he "exaggerated with his duties". 2nd: you say it yourself: he was a hostage. i know that he wasnt mistreated and that it was usual but he certainly didnt agree with being taken away.
@mitsokostas First: There is no historical evidence that he fought for his tribe, the Cherusci. According to sources Arminius was just known to be greedy for power. Again: The Cherusci tribe was an Roman ally. Second: Arminius was killed by his OWN Relatives and NOT by the Marcomanni! Third: Arminius and the "Varusschlacht" were mythologised by German ultra-nationalists (while they live(d) in a greco-roman shaped state). It's very strange to hear such glorifications from a Not-German like you.
@junioreconomist i mean he fought for his tribe during and after the varusschlacht not before. also the one who killed him had been a relative of his ( a cousin) but he was a member of the marcomanni tribe. and well the varusschlacht surely enough was mythologised but imagine present day germany or even europe if this crucial and crushing victory had not been achieved. also my mothers from austria so im somewhat german anyway ;-)!
@mitsokostas The point is that Arminius was never completely supported by his own tribe. And most important: The "Varusschlacht" was surely a severe defeat for Romans but it was neither crucial for Roman nor for European history! Even AFTER the defeat many tribes remained loyal to Rome and the tragically lost legions were rapidly replaced and started again to operate deep in the forests of Germania! What was crucial for history was the disintegration of central power and the barbarian migration.
@junioreconomist celtic?!?!?! now a hungarian is a mix of germanics too (mainly i know that there are other tribes incorporated) roman...well could be.. a slav? naaah. a hun impossible...im just saying that being an austrian (born) makes you 98% germanic anyway so 2% isnt that big of a chance.
I doubt that, my best gues would be that your general Austrian will be Celtic for the biggest part. Probably Celto-Germanic like southern Germans, seeing that the Germanic tribes started living among mayor Celtic ones like the Boii in the area.
@junioreconomist and just the fact that he fought against and for his people proves his true loyalty.whereas his brother just did what would be logical for him and the romans: to stay there where he enjoyed more comfort and luxuries. any more questions?
It is just because roman empire version of history is so famous and taught to us from kids. we all think germanic ppl were barbarians. nothing like that.. they were decent bunch, they murdered savagely. but Roman empire wiped out entire nations, killed ppl in industrial scale. empire demands blood. But you will never hear that, bcoz it was winner who wrote the history.
yeees and no, the main difference is that Romand did not limit themselves to destroying places and people. After defeating their military forces, they would settle and import in full their culture - they would start building roads, temples and all that, forcing the native to be completely assimilated within the Empire. This is a very advanced pattern and rather unique for that age.
the same can be said of the english which certainly didn't have any pax romana!! rome's true greatness nothing in history rivals two hundred years of peace and trade and that wasd what made the roman empire great along= with this here latin alphabet- although influenced by etruscan ( native to italy ) and the greeks it cams into its own with letter innovations like the letter z never before seen!!
@hynixx And germans never killed people in industrial scale jackass ? Without the roman historians, we wouldn't know anything about how they celts, germanic tribes lived, who they were, etc ... You should thanks us ?
"The Teutoburg setback did not slow the Roman empire's expansion."
... "on other fronts."
Germania itself was forever abandoned as a future prospect for conquest. Certainly, sometimes expeditions were organized to quell Germanic tribes, any thoughts of conquest vanished with Teutoburg.
Simply put, Germania was not worth the effort - and cost. Sparsely populated forests with no developed villages and hostile and fierce tribes, with no obvious borders? Why not rather draw the line at Rhine...
It could have been worthwhile for Rome to conquer and develop it just like Gaul, although it would take decades to get a profit.
Even though the Amber trade route was not enough to justify controlling the area with vast amounts of legions, the northern economy boomed after the empire fell without any drastic
new discoveries.
First we had the Frankish empire, then the North Sea emporia , then the
um the germany then is not the germany today. the romans also were doing this to protect their claims in Gaul, the barbarians would attack Gaul (which they eventually got around to) if the Legions did not attempt to stop them.
Once more, i root for the professional and disciplined Legions of rome.
haha i obviously know the germania then is not the germany today, what does that have to do with anything? rome DID invade others people's lands and enslaved many people. as did many civilizations. but the romans are still glorified but others who do it are condemned. it's obvious they didn't have conquest out of defense. some battles may have been. but surely they had an offensive campaign for their own desires.
Proud to be a nazi? i guess you have never been to germany were we have immigrants from everywere and i live in a mostly minority neighborhood in california please dont speak on what you dont know?
Funny, I was just on the Kalkriese Varusschlacht website today checking out their pics in preparation for my trip to Kalkriese next year before I saw this vid. Thanks for posting some of the actual footage from a reenactment. I would've liked to have seen more of the German warriors, but this isn't bad.
roman forces sucked at the time, plain and simple. Most were cut down, over 20,000 romans were decimated and several generals killed. germanic forces lost barely a thousand.
There were 10,000 romans killed at that battle, not because they sucked, oh no... it was under augustus when the roman empire was at it strongest but because they wore heavy armor and had to walk through a dense forest, where they couldn't form up and they had a hard time moving. The germanics had light armor and knew the forest so they could easily run around there. They also fought in a swamp so.. heavy armor + swamp = drown... they didn't suck at all..
Aber was will man dagegen schon machen? *seufz*
Echtes Reenactment geht anders!!!
It's SHAMEFUL that the Germans don't concentrate on the pride they should feel for how the GERMANS lived and fought and protected the Fatherland from the Roman barbarians and instead worship the bastard Romans.
Roman BARBARIANS? Hardly, romans had indoor plumbing, a system of law which is used sometimes even today, concrete, the arch. I think it is the Germanic people of this time who were the Barbarians, they had none of the above items in practice.
However, the German people are definitely not barbarians any more. Beethoven's music is amazing, as is German Military Engineering, and Germany has many great traditions and a beautiful countryside.
even though they are considered barbarians. you should read tacticus's history "germania" if you haven't yet. he lists many qualities, virtues etc. that he believes are greater than those of the romans and he shows admirance for others. it's a good read.
@Mercer1012 what does a beautiful countryside have to do with bieng barbarians? thats determined by which side you're looking from its kinda impossible to look at it objectively

Germanicus and Marcus Aurelius both successfully invaded Germania.
The Teutoburg setback did not slow the Roman empire's expansion.
In fact, Rome conquered Britannia, Dacia, Mauretania, Capadoccia, etc. Even the Parthian capital, Ctesiphon, was sacked 3x by the Romans.
The Romans even reached all the way to the Persian Gulf despite the fact that they abandoned it because it was indefensible.

Mercer1012 2 years ago
do you support people invading other people's countries?
raedenjay 2 years ago
um the germany then is not the germany today. the romans also were doing this to protect their claims in Gaul, the barbarians would attack Gaul (which they eventually got around to) if the Legions did not attempt to stop them.
Once more, i root for the professional and disciplined Legions of rome.
Mercer1012 2 years ago 4
haha i obviously know the germania then is not the germany today, what does that have to do with anything? rome DID invade others people's lands and enslaved many people. as did many civilizations. but the romans are still glorified but others who do it are condemned. it's obvious they didn't have conquest out of defense. some battles may have been. but surely they had an offensive campaign for their own desires.

Bierreisender 2 years ago
Thank you! The Germans were on the side where you couldn't see anything, that's why:)
I believe that they changed it a little-bit this year so that the visiters have a better view.
The next one is in 2011, but nevertheless its interesting to see the museum and the sight.
Have a pleasant trip.:)

roman forces sucked at the time, plain and simple. Most were cut down, over 20,000 romans were decimated and several generals killed. germanic forces lost barely a thousand.
nddavi58 2 years ago
Check your facts.

GSine69 3 years ago 2
Aber was will man dagegen schon machen? *seufz*
Provokator09 2 years ago
Echtes Reenactment geht anders!!!

AVE
SEPTIMIVS 3 years ago

It's SHAMEFUL that the Germans don't concentrate on the pride they should feel for how the GERMANS lived and fought and protected the Fatherland from the Roman barbarians and instead worship the bastard Romans.
7111nailuj 3 years ago
germans of nowadays are not the germans of that time
Darius92Mutinensis 3 years ago
Agree. I dont think Germans today are beheading messengers and sending the headless corpse riding back on the horse to his camp from whence he came.
Mercer1012 2 years ago
Roman BARBARIANS? Hardly, romans had indoor plumbing, a system of law which is used sometimes even today, concrete, the arch. I think it is the Germanic people of this time who were the Barbarians, they had none of the above items in practice.
However, the German people are definitely not barbarians any more. Beethoven's music is amazing, as is German Military Engineering, and Germany has many great traditions and a beautiful countryside.
Mercer1012 2 years ago 2
even though they are considered barbarians. you should read tacticus's history "germania" if you haven't yet. he lists many qualities, virtues etc. that he believes are greater than those of the romans and he shows admirance for others. it's a good read.
raedenjay 2 years ago 5
and yes some qualities he says are inferior as well such as being drunk and lazy
raedenjay 2 years ago
@Mercer1012 what does a beautiful countryside have to do with bieng barbarians? thats determined by which side you're looking from its kinda impossible to look at it objectively
