Pople have no control over their skin color, or sex, or sexuality. But its flat out bullshit that they dont have control over the size of the bodies. They are burden to everyone, as they are in the hospital more often, cannot work as quickly and efficiently, and bring shame and embarrasement to the rest who decide not to be lard asses.
Thereto imagine someone weighs 302 lbs and they just recently lost about 2 lbs so they weigh now 300 lbs. Are people gonna say Hey good job losing 2 lbs. No..more than likely they will say. Hey fat cow why dont you stop eating and move your fat Beep.
so...it USED to be these people's right to eat what they want. Now that we are on the road to socialized medicine i'm gonna full on call people out for buying twinkies and mcdonalds because I will be paying for their healthcare and THIS is a shockingly expensive health condition.
What Ms. Puhl says in the last four minutes is sobering news. Indeed, it is extremely hard to keep your weight down if you have gone from obesity to a more normal size. years ago I weighed 280 lbs., got down to 175 just last year, but struggle continuously with a desire to eat more (and in fact recently gained 20 lbs. that i'm trying to yet again take off). And how can you not in the US, with this food EVERYWHERE? We should encourage and enable people to eat healthy, never stigmatize
lol harmful effects of obesity discrimination, someone says they're fat so they go home crying and eat a whole cake. i guess thats harmful but who the fuck cares.
Some people react to stress differently. Some people go home and eat sweets, others go home and drink alcohol, others smoke, Overeating is any worse than someone smoking or someone drinking. They all 3 are unhealthy. Some people eat emotionally so when they are sad or upset or stressed...they eat food. Some people instead of eating emotionally drink or smoke. Telling someone they are a fat slob isn't going to make them lose the weight...it will only make it worse.

It's so hard to avoid sugar because about every food has sugar in it. Organic food is more expensive, and eating healthy costs more so no wonder there are more overweight people. I'm surprised I'm still thin. I just don't eat much food is all and I don't eat much sweets even though I love them.
Im trying to use some of the interview information in a courseowork essay I am writing as part of my degree. I was wondering if anyone knew which station this was broadcast from, which part of the US it was broadcast from and if this interview is part of a TV programme or a series or something? any additional information would be helpful!
the motivation is your endangered life. that does it for me at least and i feel truelly sorry for anyone who doesn't care enough about their lives to lose some f*cking weight. but not just sorry but also annoyed because, as coverband69 mentioned, it costs a sh*tload of money to take care of you guys...
Sorry but people being obese affects you in no way except you using them to make yourself feel better. It's their right to eat what they want and do what they want, the same way you have those rights. Oh and by the by I'm not obese but I doubt it matters very much in the context of this discussion.
I have seen both sides and I can say that obese people need more medical attention, fight constantly against 'normal weight' attitutes and it just gets on everybody's nerves. When I was obese, I believe I concentrated more on what others thought than on my own goals. If obese people are happy then why do they constantly complain? Getting fat is just a result of another problem; life style, hard times, emotional distress. Concentrate on solving the real problem.
I used to have over 200 pounds, now I have a healthy BMI. First of all, when someone loses a lot of weight, his or her attitute changes toward the world. I do not believe that all of the 'discrimination' problems have to do with the 'others'. When I had 200 pounds, I became lazier, I did not have a high self esteem, and I had other health problems as a result. I can understand how others get angry at obese people because I believe obese people cause the high prices of health insurance . . .
Bullies are very sick people. They have huge psychological problems. They believe that they can make themselves feel better by making others feel bad. This is a very serious disease which does a lot of harm to society.
Fat is fat, but bullies are filth which pollute the world. We need bully stigma. I have no respect toward disgusting worthless filth who open their sewermouth, inner or physical, and can´t control the Freudian filth which comes from their mind. I
You can't control your gender, color, even to an extent sexual orietation, but you canh control what your body takes in and what it does. Eat vegetables and exercise, not just walking, but running, swimming, and cycling.
That's fine and some people are fat cause of eating too much and not moving enough. However, that isnt always the case. Some people have things like Cushing's and thus it isnt their fault they are fat. We cant look at a fat person and assume the ONLY reason is cause all he/she does is sit around and eat candy and greasy foods from McDonalds and never moves.
i totally agree with you on everything being morbidly obese is normally caused when the person is addicted to food so its the same as trying to tell someone to quite smoking it very difficult to do and they need to seek help because it is an unhealthy lifestyle
for some people its not there fault there are diseases that can cause problems when some one is first starting chemo they appear obese but its not there fault
We should focus our efforts towards ending obesity not the stigma. Only in America. Send some of these people to Ethiopia have them take a look at some guys who could do with a tenth of what these people eat in a day.
I think the stigma of obesity is that you can't respect somebody who does not have the discipline to put down that donut or quarter pounder with cheese.
Exhorting someone to lose weight in order to improve their health and energy is one thing, choosing to view them as subhuman and below you is quite another. You say you can't respect a fat person because they lack self-control in food (which is sad as i once was obese and know it can be hard-wired from birth), but i'm initially finding it hard to respect someone who can't spell 'independent,' though you may contribute positively to the world in many other ways. I urge you to reconsider.

You appear to be very ignorant, please allow me to enlighten you.
Many overweight people have problems, eg inability to exercise, diabetes, or a mental disorder.
Those who are overweight often try to change how they look, but find it difficult, can recieve little/no support or are made to feel bad by people who tell them 'it's easy' so they end up with a food related disorder. These can include anorexia, bulimia, which while make them lose weight, but may kill them, or binge/compulsive eating,
which can increase weight. Bullying or discrimination can cause these people to want to be suicidal. Were you ever suicidal? Do you know how depression, low self-esteem and self image or economic disadvantage can destroy you?
People aren't 'lazy' just because they aren't slimming. They could be happy as they are, finding it hard, or even have lost weight but aren't yet 'thin'

That is only partly true. It is true that yes some people can change it..not over night...that's stupid...but yes. However, there are people who have medical conditions like Cushings or other factors that show otherwise. Not all obese people have the same situation. To think they do isnt wise.
Obesity is a problem, true. And in movies, popular literature, etc the fat=villain or just fat=subhuman is typical image. Immature crap who are behind these steteotypes cause anorexia more than thin models!
Obesity will take an all out tactical advance. This advance requires education, real education and I advocate labelling food as a substance. have you ever been in a needy neighborhood or around needy people? they are almost all overweight. poor people often can only afford to buy poor quality foods that are high in calories and/or fat but low in nutrition, for example boxed mac n cheese or ramen noodles. If they are fortunate enough to afford meats, it is usually in the form of hotdogs and bologna. I grew up very poor and obese since 10. Overweight is not always the result of gluttony. Please have some compassion and understanding.
You should probably read an entire post before replying back to someone. Besides, there is more involved besides taking from one and giving to another. Some countries refuse aide or indepentent militia block incoming rescourses. But that is besides the point. In these countries obesity is not an issue to begin with, so it has no relevance to the topic of this video.
nah, you just didn't think before you said your first comment, rachiebaby24 is absolutely right on this one. And here's another thing: why should the US give the world's poor foods so high in oil and sugar that most foreign stomachs can't take them? Dude, you're wrong on this one, just be wrong, everyone is from time to time, no big deal
OBESITY THUNDER BAY . AGAINST OBESITY NOT AGAINST OBESE PEOPLES. These are wonderful tools ,and simply ideas .Ideas that may alter how we treat others ,and how we treat ourselves. ALL FOODS IN BALANCE.
I am very appreciative of the effort to explore this issue . I think both videos are wonderful, and I hope others will view OBESITY THUNDER BAY. AGAINST OBESITY NOT AGAINST OBESE PEOPLES. Thanks so much for posting this and I look forward to discussing this further. OBESITY THUNDER BAY PAUL
It's idiotic to offer losing weight as a solution to ending the discrimination towards fat people. The point is fat people have a right to respect and dignity they shouldn't have to be thin to gain that. I've been fat my entire adult life. The thing is I don't have a problem being fat until someone else makes it an issue. Unless I am going to sit on your wicker furniture don't worry about it.
IS FOOD A SUBSTANCE???? Please view obesity Thunder Bay.
This is a complex issue ,and the diet industry continues to try and manipulate truth. There are no quick fixes ,and we need to stop blaming obese people. It fails to inspire change. LIFESTYLE is just another way of blaming.
While it is specifically cigarettes that can cause cancer, with obesity its both the food we eat and our lifestyles away from the dinner table. Go for a walk, go to the gym, ride a bike. These things are fun and social and are definitely part of the solution. If people choose not to do these things, they're have as much blame as the food produced by "american companies."
Its very difficult doing those things, I myself am Obese, and I have trouble dressing myself in the morning. I try taking a walk outside, and I get all kinds of nasty hurtful comments. some kids ride their bikes beside me yelling fatty and follow me a whole block before they leave...How does an Obese person excercise when they are trying to do the right thing and they get harassed? I would love to actually garden, but where I live there's not enough space. Whats an Obese person to do?
You can do work outs in your home. Sit ups, leg ups, lift some heavy objects as weight lifting, push ups. I would recommend buying Seventeen magazines, they sometimes have a page in there about work outs you can do in your home.
Out of one side of their mouth they say to lose weight and exercise, but when ya do they call you names. Then they wonder why some obese people dont exercise. I think that is stupid of them.
While i'm not going to quit eating fast food anytime soon, I take as much responsibility for my actions as I can and I EXERCISE regularly, hike, run and don't watch that much television (incidentally those things are also helpful for those who try to quit smoking.)
As a smoker, I know firsthand the addictive properties of cigarettes. They are chemically addictive and when you try to quit, it seems that every part of your brain is screaming for a cigg. As someone who loves McDonalds and Wendys and eats them far more than he should, its obvious that they don't have the same chemically addictive properties as cigarettes.
The problem here is that american companies are interested in making obesity look like a group you belong too (like race or gender) rather then a health problem because that allows them to sell more unhealthy junk food.
We should worry more about how to fight obesity rather then how to make society accept it. Society's bias towards healthy people probably saves quite a few lives.
If there are people in the USA who go out of their way to buy organic food, or cook and eat at home, they are the ones beating the system. I think step one, well ending the stigmatization is one thing, but it will so nothing to sove the problem obesidty. I think the fast foodindustry needs to be held accountable just like big tobbaco and biug ahcohal. That´s step #1. Getting obese people to resolve thier issues and lose wieght is #2.Demanding better public transporation must be in the equation.
Lose weight. It's about being healthy and not having high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and asthma. Being "stigmatized" for bad personal choices is not that bad. In order to end the stigmatization of obesity would be for those obese people to exercise and eat right and live a healthy life.
But your talkin gbout a society that produces obese people. The fast food industry uses the same tack ticks that Tabacco companies use to get their addicts. It pays for the fastfood industry to produce addicts, and in a way, helps the health care industry make lots of money. Keep in mind public transport in the USA is bad, workers don´t enjoy the same rights as those in other industrialized countries, people really don´t have time to cook.
'being "stigmataized" for bad personal choices is not that bad.'
I have lost 3 stone in an effort to become healthy, making me, at the moment, only 1 stone overweight. But you know what? When I'm on school, I'm beaten, kicked and shoved because of how I look, they threaten me daily because I'm big.
Not that bad my posterior.
It isn't healthy for me to be overweight, but I should be allowed to live an ordinary life, no worse, or better, than anyone else.
Have you ever noticed at a restaurant in the US the seating is much wider and sturdier than say in Europe. Or at the airports now in the US, the chairs and tables are huge.
Don't end the stigmitization of obesity! Get healthy. Eat healthy! Exercise! 40,000 years ago, no one like this would have been able to survive. They LOOK diseased to us! ONLY diseased people could have looked like this! Get with it. Exercise. Eat only foods we are MEANT TO EAT! DON'T drink 64 oz Colas! Duh!
Very complicated issue. One thing to keep in mind that it's BETTER, objectively, to be of a healthy bodyweight (not "skinny" but healthy) than to be obese. It's not the same for things like race and sex where the discrimination is pretty subjective.
Also there's very much a complicated class and economic element of it. When Americans are dying for eating too much while others die for not getting enough, that's horrible. But also, healthier lifestyles are expensive...
...so you can get the reverse bias - the idea of fat white trash is partly just stereotype, but there's some truth to it. If you can't pay your mortgage you're not going to be spending your afternoons at the gym or buying organic vegetables at farmers' markets.
Well, she mentioned lower salaries for the obese... well wouldn't the fact that they can't do as much as a person with normal body weight account for that salary difference?
Why end the stigmatisation of something that shouldn't exist... we can't just allow obesity to run rampant in our society... it's not healthy, it's not moral, and it should stop. Grant it, hostility towards the obese should be stopped, and care and love should be the triggers of change.
Families are the worst. I know from experience. My brother and I would always degrade our sister when we were young and this was a form a stigmatising as is being short in a society that looks at the tall man as the "natural" leader or being one of the "beautiful" people leads to being treated different, better.

rachiebaby24 3 years ago 2
This is the case in America only, by the way. In other countries, it is a entirely different situation.
rachiebaby24 3 years ago
in other countries people can't afford FOOD AT ALL . Think carefully of the term needy.
insightliviu 3 years ago
You should probably read an entire post before replying back to someone. Besides, there is more involved besides taking from one and giving to another. Some countries refuse aide or indepentent militia block incoming rescourses. But that is besides the point. In these countries obesity is not an issue to begin with, so it has no relevance to the topic of this video.
rachiebaby24 3 years ago
nah, you just didn't think before you said your first comment, rachiebaby24 is absolutely right on this one. And here's another thing: why should the US give the world's poor foods so high in oil and sugar that most foreign stomachs can't take them? Dude, you're wrong on this one, just be wrong, everyone is from time to time, no big deal

You are right. However with some people they think no are convinced that one situation fits ALL.

Thanks Paul

While it is specifically cigarettes that can cause cancer, with obesity its both the food we eat and our lifestyles away from the dinner table. Go for a walk, go to the gym, ride a bike. These things are fun and social and are definitely part of the solution. If people choose not to do these things, they're have as much blame as the food produced by "american companies."
vrabelm 3 years ago

DevilButtKicker 2 years ago
While i'm not going to quit eating fast food anytime soon, I take as much responsibility for my actions as I can and I EXERCISE regularly, hike, run and don't watch that much television (incidentally those things are also helpful for those who try to quit smoking.)
vrabelm 3 years ago
As a smoker, I know firsthand the addictive properties of cigarettes. They are chemically addictive and when you try to quit, it seems that every part of your brain is screaming for a cigg. As someone who loves McDonalds and Wendys and eats them far more than he should, its obvious that they don't have the same chemically addictive properties as cigarettes.

The problem here is that american companies are interested in making obesity look like a group you belong too (like race or gender) rather then a health problem because that allows them to sell more unhealthy junk food.
We should worry more about how to fight obesity rather then how to make society accept it. Society's bias towards healthy people probably saves quite a few lives.
helixdq 3 years ago
you can eat healthy by cooking ay home.
Use fresh ingredents and eating in the season is the key to healthy diet
baderhasson 3 years ago
If Whole Foods was sold at McDonalds prices and was in as many places as McDonalds then we might be able to make a dent in obesity levels.

Getting obese people to resolve thier issues and lose wieght is #2.Demanding better public transporation must be in the equation.
mrshutter77 3 years ago
Lose weight. It's about being healthy and not having high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and asthma. Being "stigmatized" for bad personal choices is not that bad. In order to end the stigmatization of obesity would be for those obese people to exercise and eat right and live a healthy life.
vrabelm 3 years ago
But your talkin gbout a society that produces obese people. The fast food industry uses the same tack ticks that Tabacco companies use to get their addicts. It pays for the fastfood industry to produce addicts, and in a way, helps the health care industry make lots of money. Keep in mind public transport in the USA is bad, workers don´t enjoy the same rights as those in other industrialized countries, people really don´t have time to cook.
mrshutter77 3 years ago
'being "stigmataized" for bad personal choices is not that bad.'
I have lost 3 stone in an effort to become healthy, making me, at the moment, only 1 stone overweight. But you know what? When I'm on school, I'm beaten, kicked and shoved because of how I look, they threaten me daily because I'm big.
Not that bad my posterior.
It isn't healthy for me to be overweight, but I should be allowed to live an ordinary life, no worse, or better, than anyone else.
Shouldn't I?

Have you ever looked at the seating in our country vs other countries big difference.
brick4sale 3 years ago
what seating specifically?
ItsStillBill 3 years ago
Have you ever noticed at a restaurant in the US the seating is much wider and sturdier than say in Europe. Or at the airports now in the US, the chairs and tables are huge.

Don't end the stigmitization of obesity! Get healthy. Eat healthy! Exercise! 40,000 years ago, no one like this would have been able to survive. They LOOK diseased to us! ONLY diseased people could have looked like this! Get with it. Exercise. Eat only foods we are MEANT TO EAT! DON'T drink 64 oz Colas! Duh!
barbarossa0067 3 years ago
Very complicated issue. One thing to keep in mind that it's BETTER, objectively, to be of a healthy bodyweight (not "skinny" but healthy) than to be obese. It's not the same for things like race and sex where the discrimination is pretty subjective.
Also there's very much a complicated class and economic element of it. When Americans are dying for eating too much while others die for not getting enough, that's horrible. But also, healthier lifestyles are expensive...
jammoexii 3 years ago
...so you can get the reverse bias - the idea of fat white trash is partly just stereotype, but there's some truth to it. If you can't pay your mortgage you're not going to be spending your afternoons at the gym or buying organic vegetables at farmers' markets.
jammoexii 3 years ago
Well, she mentioned lower salaries for the obese... well wouldn't the fact that they can't do as much as a person with normal body weight account for that salary difference?
santiagowechsler 3 years ago
Why end the stigmatisation of something that shouldn't exist... we can't just allow obesity to run rampant in our society... it's not healthy, it's not moral, and it should stop. Grant it, hostility towards the obese should be stopped, and care and love should be the triggers of change.
santiagowechsler 3 years ago
Thin people get picked on all the time too, believe me. I'm a fit 6'2" 190lbs. and I get told I should eat more. Ridiculous.
TheEclecticStation 3 years ago
Families are the worst. I know from experience. My brother and I would always degrade our sister when we were young and this was a form a stigmatising as is being short in a society that looks at the tall man as the "natural" leader or being one of the "beautiful" people leads to being treated different, better.
