Well, at least you knew from the beginning that he had talent for lateral movements! lol
But seriously, you did a great job. You're braver than I am! A couple of times during the vid I was sure he was going to rear and that's where I say enough is enough. :-)
You are a very paient and kind rider. Although, I do not understand why you started with spurse then ended with out them. I think, especially with a flighty horse, less is more.:-) You know start w/ less then go from there.
He is not the typical understanding of a 'flighty' horse. What he is doing is not a reaction to an aid or outside stimulus. He is mentally over-thinking and has a long history or not so correct training. I did start him without spurs or whip, but it was not taped. I tried spurs first, but has absolutely no reaction even it may seem so. I then tried a whip, which he does have a mild reaction to. It gives enough so he can break his over-thinking pattern and flying backwards.
I love how quietly you sit, giving aids, yet calmly helping the horse figure himself out and make sense of what is being asked of him.
I hate seeing when people automatically assume a horse is being bad without trying to discover what is causing the behaviour. Instead, they turn to anger and punishment, which only leaves the poor horse more confused.
Definitely loving what you do. You're a fantastic rider. There needs to be more people like you in the horse world.

I have to say... been there ha. Good times though ;) I have a Straight Egyptian Arabian mare who did the same things, all due to prior "training" and hot-headed personality. She has since turned into a completely different horse, and it's amazing! She used to plant a foot and pivot as fast as she could around it, now w/t/c calmly in frame. People went from being actually SCARED of her even on the ground to admiring her. I applaud you.
i wish i could ride like you. recently i have started riding and training this lesson horse, a very fat little black pony named Pepper, who spooks at everything! i always manage to stay on an calm her down, but you have done miracles with horses with much worse problems, and i haven't been able to think of anything that i could do for pepper! where did you learn about horses and riding?
When he got upset he did not respond to aids - leg and seat. I worked on the ground with the whip first he has not fear of the whip. The whip is not punishment it is a reinforcement of my leg and seat aid when he would not respond to go forward. He actually has very little reaction to it, it helped just enough to hesitate or stop him from going backwards a bit. His tension has nothing to do with carrying with the whip. You can see I am still carrying it when he is relaxed at the end.
Halfpassgal - a name to remember for excellent riding and training! Great seat and hands, impressive balance: she anticipates every movement of her horse and thus rides in full harmony, very elegant - even when he tries to fight her.
She has got a lot of fire under her saddle and manages well to calm that down. It sometimes seems that she incourages his dancing, wants him to step delicately. I wonder whether she also enjoyed that challenge. And the result: A great trainer at the age 20! Top!!!
It's nice to see an older horse with some spunk! And I agree with oakwoodfarm. And, anyone else who criticizes the way you train, should first check out your video "Breathe", to see the outcome. I think they need to Breathe and Exhale before criticizing you. :) I wonder if they can post some videos of their training methods and successes? I'd LOVE to see them. ;)
After watching this a few times, i've come to the conclusion this horse has no tolerance for spurs, some do, but some don't... My previous horses, a little arab, you touched him with spurs and his sides would cringe and he would sling his hindquarters everywhere... Remove the spurs, and if the horse tries to back up, don't ask him to move forawrd because obviously that doesn't work, either make him stop, or make him back up even more than he wants. Once he stops, ask with LEG PRESSURE to move fo
She isn't beating this horse! The whip is just an extension of her hand to "ask" him to move forward. She is only tap, tap, tapping him. She is in no way beating the horse and as for the martingale, I think that after time when he has sorted all of his "human" related issues out, it wouldn't even be a necessity. There's always got to be a critic.
Maybe it´s just me but I really can´t see how a martingale can help you see the problem. The way I work is watch the horse very carefully in different situations to see where and when he does something and when not. Mostly throwing up the head just means the horse is nervous or doesn´t like something. In most cases relaxing it and having a stronger leg contact (?no idea how to say it in english) has helped a lot. I bet you know this but a horse that wants to work works the best, always :)
soerd agh someone with some true horse sense and savvy. this horse has come a long way whatever youre training methods are youve done well and youve earned his trust. good job
There´s always a reason to all horse problems and with behaviour problems it´s in their mind. If you find the reason and stop that, then the problem goes.
All the problem horses that were brought to me as a last resort before sending them to slaughter, were later doing everything they couldn´t do before bareback and no bridle as well as with tack.
You can´t cure something if you don´t know what it is.
Oh yes I have :) I´ve dealt with horses that don´t let anyone touch them at 5 years old. I´ve dealt with those who can´t make three straight steps without rearing. Not to mention those with many other problems.
Immobilize=prevent movement. Holding the horse´s head down is restricting movement. Using a martingale means you always have to use a martingale. It means you´re just hiding the problem. (i cant fit it all in one post sorry)
Now I´m not trying to be mean or anything, so don´t flame me!
But I personally believe that using different straps and such to "solve" problems is not the responsible way to act. There´s a reason for your horse to do what he does, and in stead of beating him and pulling his head down you ought to address the problem differently. SOLVE the problem, don´t blame it on your horse and hide it by immobilizing him.
It really has been a fight to help him understand and you've done great with him. It's good to see so much progress, especially him starting to relax. :) Bravo.
Congratulations. I am so glad that someone is showing the cynical and ignorant out there that even 'crazy' horses just have some issues that can be worked through with a patient and understanding rider. Your videos really are an inspiration! You are a fantastic rider, and it is so rewarding to see Sabi a happy and relaxed working horse at the end :D
Oh YEAH i love horses like that my mare was like that but she kicked me the first times i tryed to get on her and finaly it was a run jump and slip in to the saddle great video
Gosh it shockes me to see what people do to get there horses to that level. He is pretty. He has probably dealt with most of those issues for a while. Do you know much about his past training.
There are some seriously clueless people posting on this thread. :(
You ride beautifully, and the fact that you could take a horse that had been so spoiled by others and make such progress is testament to that. Thanks for posting the video. :)
I think you ARE a very good horsewomen, why would you want to put up with that behaviour!? you can't let him get away with it and obviously he isnt responding to your smacks (honestly they even look like taps too me) keep up the good work !!
wel done my arab used 2 dat wewn i first got him thn i got him to relax and he went and torn his ligament so i have 2 start all over agen with him now maybe you should use a running martingale to stop him from throwing his head up just a suggestion
Let me just say, you are WONDERFUL. Dont listen to all the stuck up brats saying "you dont have good horsemanship" you obiously DO as PROVEN in the video. You took a bad horse and calmed it waaaay down! Im sure all the people who made nasty comments could NOT do THAT! You are an amazing rider with a good seat. I would love to hear how hes progressing =]
Also to your previous comment about him limping. He is not limping I check soundness (I know quite a bit about it), the looking 'off' is due to the fact he is weaker on one side and still gets a bit stuck in his back. I worried about it also and checked it out, but he is sound.
Please take time to read previous comments. There is a difference between hitting a horse and backing up an aid. He had been acting the way of the first half for many years because of previous training, not because I had a whip or spurs. The whip (spurs were removed as they were ineffective on him) was only used when he did not respond to my leg and seat and was used clearly as an aid not a punishment. The after clips he is going calm and relaxed, he would not do that if I hit him senselessly.
Shes Hitting Him Soo He Learns && What The Hells Rong Wif Wearing Spurs and iam going onto ur videos of ur riding n i can asure u that ur the crapest Ever mahn
why are you hitting the horse that much? have you ever thought of why it donsen´t want to be ridden? and the fact that you are hitting him that much wont make him like people riding him more..
There is a difference between hitting and asking for a response. I was asking and he was not responding. The rider cannot give up when the horse does not respond unless you never want to make progress. Did you watch the entire video? He is a much happier and relaxed now and does enjoy work more. He is a horse that lets you know what upsets him and I do understand after working with him what helps him. He would not come to me, nicker and work with me if he hated me I do not think.
Judging a breed wholly is not fair. Every horse is an individual. While Arabians are typically more energetic and sensitive it is not always the case and not always a bad thing when it is. When someone uses it incorrectly as they had with Sabi it does turn into a bad thing. He is a wonderful horse who was worked with incorrectly, but with time and patience he worked into the lovely horse we knew was in there. That is what the second half of the video is showing.
The spurs were basically a trial. As he went backwards and would not respond to normal aids I tried spurs as backup aid. Despite popular comment that he is reacting to the spur, he did not respond one bit to the spur. I tried carrying a whip and though not much response either, he gave a hesitation, more than getting no response at all. The spurs were just to see what worked for him - they didn't work so I took them off.
Ok. It looked kind of odd so I couldn't resist asking. Thanks for answering! :)Follow up: What Did work if neither spurs, whip or legs did? Something obviously did, as the horse is moving orward in the second half of the film.
The whip did just enough to cause him to hesitate going backwards. A lot of it was just not fighting him and keep showing him where I wanted him to go. Not letting him get away with what he wanted, but not getting mean about it either. Just kept showing him the right way to go. Eventually it clicks and then he gets rewarded and of course he likes the praise and learns the path I want is easy plus it has praise so it is much more fun.
Please do elaborate on this. Sabi has not told me I am nuts. All of the footage in the beginning of the video is what he did after many years of incorrect work and training. I worked to see what would help with him to get him to relax. He is not perfect, but in the second half of the video and by pesonal feel he is a much more relaxed horse.
wow, good job with him. The beginning reminded me a lot of some issues I have with my mare sometimes. She is an OTTB and sometimes she gets so tense she just stops thinking and gets all "bunched" up and feels like she is about to explode forward but at the same time she starts collecting herself more and more until she is basically moving in place. Then when I try and put leg on her to encourage her forward she explodes into backing, spinning, rearing, the whole shebang.
I think he would have made a lovely dressage horse! I really like how he moves, even though it tends to be in the wrong direction, lol. Great work with him, I saw some of the earlier videos and I can't believe how much progress you've made! Props to you!
How did you help him? You're inspiring me--I've always wanted to do what you do now. I am training horses, but not problem horses. How did you start? How do you find horses to help? How do you know how to help them? Please answer!
Lots of questions! Some may be a bit long to answer, I will do my best. The last three are all one I suppose. My trainer has taught me pretty much everything I know, plus a few trusted clinicians. My trainer not only teaches me to ride, but how to train as that is what I want to do. Some times it takes me figuring out a horse and what their needs are on my own, if I get stuck or have questions I work with my trainer and learn and progress from that.
I don't go looking for the horses to help, more of a word of mouth type of thing. As for helping Sabi the short of it is he needed time, lots of patience, and someone who showed him the right thing to do instead of just shutting him down saying 'no' or just letting him get away with everything.
Can't really sit too deep on him, freaks him out too much and his back get too tight. So I try to stay up a lot more. I tip a bit too much, bit of a whoops, but I think I have been more aware of that on him more recently. Different type of saddle really have to stay aware ^_^.
You really have a whip issue don't you? A whip is not bad in the right hands. None of the horses I ride are scared of the whip or me in any way, shape or form. They are very happy horses.
Hi. I had only seen this horse in the "Breathe" video but was enough to know there was a lot of history and not much of it good. He has come a long way! And again, I love your musical selections. They fit so well and this one hints at a great sense of humour. That and your patience are great assets. And by the way your seat is just fine. :)
He does look off, but it is actually a stiffness in his back. He has trouble letting go and stretching through one side. When he is less forward and gets a bit stuck it can appear off.
I do some round pen work much like join-up, I like the base and connection is help create and strengthen. Not much other than that unless their ground manners suggest otherwise.
I have checked saddle fit, one of the first things I do when I work with a horse. (he is not mine he is a clients) Along with his back, all other tack fit, his overall soundness and questions on recent vet work. He is 19 years old and has been doing this most of his life, I think after that many years if it was pain it would be quite amazing that I could all of a sudden get him to tolerate it. No, I checked (and still check regularly) and he is clear of pain related issues.
I have been working with him since just before November 2006. There was a two months gap this year where he didn't work at all while I was sick, but he retained his training. Just stiff and tight, understandable of course. This video is a bit older than that though, he has a newer clip now where is going ever better.
hahaha nice song, wow you are a really good rider ^^ wow andthe improovment is simply incredible, maybe some parelli would make him even more calmer but i think he is a good fine horse by now, nice work !
Halfpassgal. . . I am so humbled by your patience and calm attitude while you rode out Sabi's issues. I always thought I was a cool cucumber. . . but you've done an amazing job! LOVE the musci, btw!
Thank you. I think that was a huge factor with him, the patience. I don't think anyone was really at all patient with him, or stayed patient with him. Something he needs very much. I thought the music fit him to a T, especially the first song. (which I enjoy both songs, have to use songs I like too)
Wow, what a great job on the horse and the video. Love the choice of music. I'm dancing around my room while watching this :) I have a bay Arab gelding he's 4yo and not under saddle yet. He almost died after a years worth of battle with strangles. Now we just moved and he's home with me (was boarded). He had a bad case of the crazy's where he was boarded. Different horse since I got him home.
The music fits perfectly! Stallion or gelding? What a beautiful animal! Does he have markings or is he a solid grey? Might I ask why he was so wound up in the beginning?
He is a gelding. I am pretty sure he has not markings, I know he has no leg markings, I recall no face markings either. The beginning is do to problems in his past. He is incredibly smart and thinks way too much. He has had a lot of poor training and other times gotten away with too much and ended up simply a mental mess.
Aww, poor little thing, i hate seeing horses being or that have been abused, my mare had been mistreated before i got her and she was as skinny as anything, it was so bad, but she is great now... and weighs a tonne:) its good to see that you have worked him out and he is doing so well, great job.
Wow! What a gorgeous horse! you've done amazing with him, what's his condition or situation that made him like that? i suggest shortening your reins a tiny bit, but other wise he looks awesome and good job!
I shorten and lengthen the reins on feel. He got this way over 16 years by trainers and riders. Not nice people pushing to hard and others not knowing what to do when he did something. I rode him it was all mental, he overthought everything - to the point when he got upset he wasn't sure what he was doing anymore and would start shaking. Poor guy was a mess. Doesn't do any of that anymore, he is doing really well now, more than even this video. Just nice to see him happier and more relaxed.
I have a horse that does the same thing, and he is also very hard in the mouth, i have found, when they do it, either, kick the leg on and drive them foward or wrap him around in circles and he will then associate that with being worked or pulled around in tight circles. Different things work for different horses.
Yes, that certainly does not work for him at all ;x. Those things would only aggrivate the situation. His problem is not hard in the mouth or forward, much more mental than that.
oh ok, i get it now. Hope he is getting better with that, was it something that has happened to him previously or was it just him trying to get away with it?
A bit of both, and it happened for about 16 years. Riders and trainers just messing with him a bit too much or not knowing exactly what to do. Eventually he turned into a mental mess the poor thing.
Not mine, I ride him for his owner. He is actualy 19-years-old this year. Had the problems (in the 'before' for a very very long. He is a good guy though, really enjoy him ^_^.
Fantastic work halfpassgal!! Are you looking into making this your career? You should consider it. You have such a nack for working with "problem" horses. There is a great need for talented riders like yourself to help other riders and horses. We wish you would come back to Horse City!!
great job! your an amazing rider! and it makes me smile to see that there are more people out there who tkae on "crazy horses." I actually do the same thing at my lesson barn.
In those first fourty seconds I kept squeezing the mouse muttering to myself "push'em, push'em...keep his feet working." Its from helping instruct those gosh darn lessons.
Thank you. He would get himself so worked up to the point I am pretty sure he didn't even know what he was doing - his brain would shut off- (that is when we would stop) to try and get him to breathe. Working beyond that is like talking to a wall until he got his brain back. Once he brought his brain back we could get somewhere.
What a gorgeous horse - and BIG well done to you for remaining so calm, he's lucky to have finally found a rider with your skills and patience. Can I ask what his background is?
Thank you! His background is long, but I will try a short version. He has had a lot of different riders and trainers tell him different things - not all of them good. He is highly sensitive, and also extremely smart. Things just built up and worsened over the years. The worse he got the harder people would push, the worse they would make it, and the more they wouldn't want to work with him at all. (and round and round we go)
that was fantastic. id love to get some hints off you. i getting a horse soon, so i prob need some pionters since i training it myself. so if you dont mind. i loved the krisaad movie aswell. you are a fantastic rider. i think ur gr8! :)
Thank you! I hope you find a horse perfect for you, and one with maybe less of a past than this guy. It is wonderful you are looking for help, so many people do not until they have bigger problems on their hands. I would be glad to answer any questions if you ever have any to the best of my ability or at least point you in a helpful direction.
wow, u dont look freaked out at all, u look really calm ( i would be screeming my head off) i like how ur ferm with him, i kno that must be REALLY hard with a crazy horse, and that "Stgeorgeequest" person dosent kno what shes talking about, u did nothing wrong with that horse, if u did it must have been SO small cuz i didnt see it, lol, amazing job =]
Thank you very much. I had to learn what works for him. I am sure if more people knew him personally they would understand the situation more. I know when I get on him he is happier, and that is the biggest reward I can get out of it.
It depends on the horse. Some horses I will not use anything, some I will use one or the other, and some I will use both. For Sabi I carry the whip just in case he is really stuck. I have not used it in months though. I work him anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. It just depends how he is feeling that day, what we want to accomplish and how he reacts to it.
She? The horse or rider? The horse is a he ^_^. He has a lot of bad training in the past. Harsh, uneducated, combined with a sensitive horse caused a lot of problems! Just needs patience and consistency.

Omg .. This poor horse. That is not the way it should be done ! When your doing your side ways thing, it's not anything! Look at it's head. Look at your seat. Look at you balancing on it's mouth .. And that's from your unbalanced seat !!!!
Look at the uneducated comments! My seat is perfectly fine. You have to know the whole story on this horse to fully understand. If you truly had better things to do, you never would have commented in the first place. I don't mind people questioning, but don't assume when you don't know the whole story.
Aw that is very sad! I watched some of the videos, she does seem to have a few problems. If I could help of course I would. Just bring her on over ;D.
hey have u checked his back for any back problems i know my friend had that and it didn't show untill like a year later her horse did the same thing! amazing improvement!! awsome video too!
Yes absolutely, all pain issues have been ruled out, multiple times. I have had other horses who had sensitive back, so I can sympathize with you friend! Thank you.
Hello,I have been watching EVERY single video you have put on him,I really admire the way you ride and handle him,I hate seeing people tence and and just kick and kick and tighten the reins when the horse starts freaking out.Well done to you *takes hat off*
Bring you horse on over! ;D Thank you. He was kind of a huge combination of issues, spoiled was just part of his issues. Though definitely part of the big picture.
wow! great job! :)

Immobilize=prevent movement. Holding the horse´s head down is restricting movement. Using a martingale means you always have to use a martingale. It means you´re just hiding the problem. (i cant fit it all in one post sorry)
s0erd 3 years ago
Now I´m not trying to be mean or anything, so don´t flame me!
But I personally believe that using different straps and such to "solve" problems is not the responsible way to act. There´s a reason for your horse to do what he does, and in stead of beating him and pulling his head down you ought to address the problem differently. SOLVE the problem, don´t blame it on your horse and hide it by immobilizing him.
s0erd 4 years ago
It really has been a fight to help him understand and you've done great with him. It's good to see so much progress, especially him starting to relax. :) Bravo.

hey girl-- how is sabi doing these days?? he looked great at the end! congrats
getgorgeousnow 4 years ago
Congratulations. I am so glad that someone is showing the cynical and ignorant out there that even 'crazy' horses just have some issues that can be worked through with a patient and understanding rider. Your videos really are an inspiration! You are a fantastic rider, and it is so rewarding to see Sabi a happy and relaxed working horse at the end :D

you keep your seat and you dont form what i can tell from this video use you big meter long whip on him/her
oakstorm 4 years ago
Oh YEAH i love horses like that my mare was like that but she kicked me the first times i tryed to get on her and finaly it was a run jump and slip in to the saddle great video
oakstorm 4 years ago
Gosh it shockes me to see what people do to get there horses to that level. He is pretty. He has probably dealt with most of those issues for a while. Do you know much about his past training.
rebamac96 4 years ago
There are some seriously clueless people posting on this thread. :(
You ride beautifully, and the fact that you could take a horse that had been so spoiled by others and make such progress is testament to that. Thanks for posting the video. :)
Scarlet926 4 years ago
I thought that running martingales only fixed the problem for the time being, not actually solve the problem for good. aint they a quick fix?
charlie001xx 4 years ago
If used properly, they can be used as part of working towards helping the horse to improve.
sazzy925 4 years ago
I think you ARE a very good horsewomen, why would you want to put up with that behaviour!? you can't let him get away with it and obviously he isnt responding to your smacks (honestly they even look like taps too me) keep up the good work !!
lovinglochie 4 years ago
wel done my arab used 2 dat wewn i first got him thn i got him to relax and he went and torn his ligament so i have 2 start all over agen with him now maybe you should use a running martingale to stop him from throwing his head up just a suggestion
purdeynconker 4 years ago
Let me just say, you are WONDERFUL. Dont listen to all the stuck up brats saying "you dont have good horsemanship" you obiously DO as PROVEN in the video. You took a bad horse and calmed it waaaay down! Im sure all the people who made nasty comments could NOT do THAT! You are an amazing rider with a good seat. I would love to hear how hes progressing =]
kayjmaz 4 years ago
Also to your previous comment about him limping. He is not limping I check soundness (I know quite a bit about it), the looking 'off' is due to the fact he is weaker on one side and still gets a bit stuck in his back. I worried about it also and checked it out, but he is sound.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
Please take time to read previous comments. There is a difference between hitting a horse and backing up an aid. He had been acting the way of the first half for many years because of previous training, not because I had a whip or spurs. The whip (spurs were removed as they were ineffective on him) was only used when he did not respond to my leg and seat and was used clearly as an aid not a punishment. The after clips he is going calm and relaxed, he would not do that if I hit him senselessly.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
Emm Excuse Me VICCSSSS && LilGullan
Shes Hitting Him Soo He Learns && What The Hells Rong Wif Wearing Spurs and iam going onto ur videos of ur riding n i can asure u that ur the crapest Ever mahn
Jusx1 4 years ago
why are you hitting the horse that much? have you ever thought of why it donsen´t want to be ridden? and the fact that you are hitting him that much wont make him like people riding him more..
lillgullan 4 years ago
There is a difference between hitting and asking for a response. I was asking and he was not responding. The rider cannot give up when the horse does not respond unless you never want to make progress. Did you watch the entire video? He is a much happier and relaxed now and does enjoy work more. He is a horse that lets you know what upsets him and I do understand after working with him what helps him. He would not come to me, nicker and work with me if he hated me I do not think.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
Judging a breed wholly is not fair. Every horse is an individual. While Arabians are typically more energetic and sensitive it is not always the case and not always a bad thing when it is. When someone uses it incorrectly as they had with Sabi it does turn into a bad thing. He is a wonderful horse who was worked with incorrectly, but with time and patience he worked into the lovely horse we knew was in there. That is what the second half of the video is showing.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
How come you're wearing spurs on him in the early footage? Nice job anyway.
Lyrazel 4 years ago
The spurs were basically a trial. As he went backwards and would not respond to normal aids I tried spurs as backup aid. Despite popular comment that he is reacting to the spur, he did not respond one bit to the spur. I tried carrying a whip and though not much response either, he gave a hesitation, more than getting no response at all. The spurs were just to see what worked for him - they didn't work so I took them off.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
Ok. It looked kind of odd so I couldn't resist asking. Thanks for answering! :)Follow up: What Did work if neither spurs, whip or legs did? Something obviously did, as the horse is moving orward in the second half of the film.
Lyrazel 4 years ago
The whip did just enough to cause him to hesitate going backwards. A lot of it was just not fighting him and keep showing him where I wanted him to go. Not letting him get away with what he wanted, but not getting mean about it either. Just kept showing him the right way to go. Eventually it clicks and then he gets rewarded and of course he likes the praise and learns the path I want is easy plus it has praise so it is much more fun.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
arabian is NOT nuts! It is the riders who is NUTS!!!!! :(
Goldpilz 4 years ago
Please do elaborate on this. Sabi has not told me I am nuts. All of the footage in the beginning of the video is what he did after many years of incorrect work and training. I worked to see what would help with him to get him to relax. He is not perfect, but in the second half of the video and by pesonal feel he is a much more relaxed horse.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
I have a half Arabian Half Westphalian and hes a bit difficult to work with too....hes also 18.
xxhorse4lifexx 4 years ago
cont.
It is difficult to work through because, being a TB I can't make her work as a punishment, she thrives on that. lol But, good job with Sabi.
Jumps4Eva 4 years ago
wow, good job with him.
Jumps4Eva 4 years ago
your work is awesome!! :D
aslepasleniii 4 years ago
I think he would have made a lovely dressage horse! I really like how he moves, even though it tends to be in the wrong direction, lol. Great work with him, I saw some of the earlier videos and I can't believe how much progress you've made! Props to you!
randombucknellian 4 years ago
How did you help him? You're inspiring me--I've always wanted to do what you do now. I am training horses, but not problem horses. How did you start? How do you find horses to help? How do you know how to help them? Please answer!
ovalsarecool 4 years ago
Lots of questions! Some may be a bit long to answer, I will do my best. The last three are all one I suppose. My trainer has taught me pretty much everything I know, plus a few trusted clinicians. My trainer not only teaches me to ride, but how to train as that is what I want to do. Some times it takes me figuring out a horse and what their needs are on my own, if I get stuck or have questions I work with my trainer and learn and progress from that.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
I don't go looking for the horses to help, more of a word of mouth type of thing. As for helping Sabi the short of it is he needed time, lots of patience, and someone who showed him the right thing to do instead of just shutting him down saying 'no' or just letting him get away with everything.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
How old were you when you started riding?
because.. WOW! You are really good. For a 19 year old to be retraining other peoples' problem horses
Amazing. Keep up the good work.

halfpassgal 4 years ago
Are you making him do that?
bballplaya444 4 years ago
wow!
breakingthehabit2008 4 years ago
No it is a little more complicated than that.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
Can't really sit too deep on him, freaks him out too much and his back get too tight. So I try to stay up a lot more. I tip a bit too much, bit of a whoops, but I think I have been more aware of that on him more recently. Different type of saddle really have to stay aware ^_^.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
you use your whip too much : (
beautiful horse!
Lynn218 4 years ago
You really have a whip issue don't you? A whip is not bad in the right hands. None of the horses I ride are scared of the whip or me in any way, shape or form. They are very happy horses.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
I'm with you here. It's simply a delight to see how even an older horse can improve with sympathetic education
fionat2001 4 years ago
Hi. I had only seen this horse in the "Breathe" video but was enough to know there was a lot of history and not much of it good. He has come a long way! And again, I love your musical selections. They fit so well and this one hints at a great sense of humour. That and your patience are great assets. And by the way your seat is just fine. :)

FyesanFan 4 years ago
the horse looks kinda "off" or lame is the second half after you get back on and he stands.. in his hindquarters... back left i believe.
TouchofaDream 4 years ago
He does look off, but it is actually a stiffness in his back. He has trouble letting go and stretching through one side. When he is less forward and gets a bit stuck it can appear off.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
nice work not letting him freak out!

Have you checked the saddle fit? It looks like you might have just taught your horse to tolerate pain.
hors3girl 4 years ago
I have checked saddle fit, one of the first things I do when I work with a horse. (he is not mine he is a clients) Along with his back, all other tack fit, his overall soundness and questions on recent vet work. He is 19 years old and has been doing this most of his life, I think after that many years if it was pain it would be quite amazing that I could all of a sudden get him to tolerate it. No, I checked (and still check regularly) and he is clear of pain related issues.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
woah , u done good with him , well done 4 not loosing ur patience with him . uve got a really good seat glad to see hes alot better x
6rosie6 4 years ago
Thank you. Losing patience is a problem too many people had with him, something that should not happen ever again. ^_^
halfpassgal 4 years ago
How long you training that horse?
Fritzfani 4 years ago
I have been working with him since just before November 2006. There was a two months gap this year where he didn't work at all while I was sick, but he retained his training. Just stiff and tight, understandable of course. This video is a bit older than that though, he has a newer clip now where is going ever better.
halfpassgal 4 years ago

Halfpassgal. . . I am so humbled by your patience and calm attitude while you rode out Sabi's issues. I always thought I was a cool cucumber. . . but you've done an amazing job! LOVE the musci, btw!
PainthorseKate81 4 years ago
Thank you. I think that was a huge factor with him, the patience. I don't think anyone was really at all patient with him, or stayed patient with him. Something he needs very much. I thought the music fit him to a T, especially the first song. (which I enjoy both songs, have to use songs I like too)
halfpassgal 4 years ago
Wow, what a great job on the horse and the video. Love the choice of music. I'm dancing around my room while watching this :) I have a bay Arab gelding he's 4yo and not under saddle yet. He almost died after a years worth of battle with strangles. Now we just moved and he's home with me (was boarded). He had a bad case of the crazy's where he was boarded. Different horse since I got him home.
woofnhoofinwi 4 years ago
Thank you. Glad it could entertain you too! I am also happy to hear your horse is doing better now, always good to hear about happy horses.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
The music fits perfectly! Stallion or gelding? What a beautiful animal! Does he have markings or is he a solid grey? Might I ask why he was so wound up in the beginning?
AriusShadow 4 years ago
He is a gelding. I am pretty sure he has not markings, I know he has no leg markings, I recall no face markings either. The beginning is do to problems in his past. He is incredibly smart and thinks way too much. He has had a lot of poor training and other times gotten away with too much and ended up simply a mental mess.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
Aww, poor little thing, i hate seeing horses being or that have been abused, my mare had been mistreated before i got her and she was as skinny as anything, it was so bad, but she is great now... and weighs a tonne:) its good to see that you have worked him out and he is doing so well, great job.
Ezyridr 4 years ago
Thank you. I am glad to hear the mare you got is doing well, I'm sure she is much happier now. (especially with a full belly :D)
halfpassgal 4 years ago
Wow! What a gorgeous horse! you've done amazing with him, what's his condition or situation that made him like that? i suggest shortening your reins a tiny bit, but other wise he looks awesome and good job!
BillyTalentIsLove 4 years ago
I shorten and lengthen the reins on feel. He got this way over 16 years by trainers and riders. Not nice people pushing to hard and others not knowing what to do when he did something. I rode him it was all mental, he overthought everything - to the point when he got upset he wasn't sure what he was doing anymore and would start shaking. Poor guy was a mess. Doesn't do any of that anymore, he is doing really well now, more than even this video. Just nice to see him happier and more relaxed.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
I have a horse that does the same thing, and he is also very hard in the mouth, i have found, when they do it, either, kick the leg on and drive them foward or wrap him around in circles and he will then associate that with being worked or pulled around in tight circles. Different things work for different horses.
Ezyridr 4 years ago
Yes, that certainly does not work for him at all ;x. Those things would only aggrivate the situation. His problem is not hard in the mouth or forward, much more mental than that.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
oh ok, i get it now. Hope he is getting better with that, was it something that has happened to him previously or was it just him trying to get away with it?
Ezyridr 4 years ago
A bit of both, and it happened for about 16 years. Riders and trainers just messing with him a bit too much or not knowing exactly what to do. Eventually he turned into a mental mess the poor thing.
halfpassgal 4 years ago
Not mine, I ride him for his owner. He is actualy 19-years-old this year. Had the problems (in the 'before' for a very very long. He is a good guy though, really enjoy him ^_^.

Fantastic work halfpassgal!! Are you looking into making this your career? You should consider it. You have such a nack for working with "problem" horses. There is a great need for talented riders like yourself to help other riders and horses. We wish you would come back to Horse City!!
chandranielson 5 years ago
great job! your an amazing rider! and it makes me smile to see that there are more people out there who tkae on "crazy horses." I actually do the same thing at my lesson barn.
In those first fourty seconds I kept squeezing the mouse muttering to myself "push'em, push'em...keep his feet working." Its from helping instruct those gosh darn lessons.
dontstayfallen 5 years ago
Thank you. He would get himself so worked up to the point I am pretty sure he didn't even know what he was doing - his brain would shut off- (that is when we would stop) to try and get him to breathe. Working beyond that is like talking to a wall until he got his brain back. Once he brought his brain back we could get somewhere.
halfpassgal 5 years ago
What a gorgeous horse - and BIG well done to you for remaining so calm, he's lucky to have finally found a rider with your skills and patience. Can I ask what his background is?
boagirl1982 5 years ago
(and round and round we go)
halfpassgal 5 years ago

wonderful! sorry for my english..do you prefer whip or spurs? How many hour do you work with him?
phoenix794501 5 years ago
It depends on the horse. Some horses I will not use anything, some I will use one or the other, and some I will use both. For Sabi I carry the whip just in case he is really stuck. I have not used it in months though. I work him anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. It just depends how he is feeling that day, what we want to accomplish and how he reacts to it.

halfpassgal 5 years ago
Omg .. This poor horse. That is not the way it should be done ! When your doing your side ways thing, it's not anything! Look at it's head. Look at your seat. Look at you balancing on it's mouth .. And that's from your unbalanced seat !!!!
I could go on, but I have better things to do.
Stgeorgeequest 5 years ago
Look at the uneducated comments! My seat is perfectly fine. You have to know the whole story on this horse to fully understand. If you truly had better things to do, you never would have commented in the first place. I don't mind people questioning, but don't assume when you don't know the whole story.
