At that time he was probably nervous of choking in front of goal on the big stage, so Mortlock probably offered to take the burden.
Was a shame Mortlock missed that last kick but you can hardly lay the loss on him. I mean 'wonderboot' Johnny Wilkinson only kicked 4 from 8 that game.
