  • damn.. my fingers are short xD

  • anyone else realize there are 8 notes in this scale?

  • @ZxMetaLxMadnessxZ He says 7 notes because the root note G, is used at the beginning and the end of the scale.

  • Why is there text all over the screen?

  • i love this instrument.

  • It doesn't matter what instrument you play, learning scales will always make you a better player. This is a helpful video.

  • im sure thig guy likes 311

  • lolz only 4 noobs xD

  • Is it possible to play the pentatonic blues scales (as on a normal guitar) with a bass under a blues as a bass solo? Just like you play a guitar solo on blues with those scales?

  • my nipples look like milk duds

  • good video...also, I have posted some advanced bass lessons fro everyone, using major scale too...I take this good idea and get super fast, emulating Billy Sheehan, jaco etc..cheers !

  • I've had my eye on bass for quite a while. These type of videos may give me a head start until I order and recieve my bass.

Quick question: How do you stop a string from sustaining the noise (ex. You play E-1st fret and then you play A-3rd fret). Is there a way to stop sustaining the noise or does it stop automatically when you remove your finger from the fret?

  • When I move up a string I put my thumb on the string above it.

  • you can either mute the string with your left hand by resting a finger over the string that you do not wish you play (after removing your finger from the fret). you can also mute the strings with your right hand by alternating fingers and placing a finger on the unused string to stop it from vibrating. hope that helped (and made sense)

  • it stops as soon as you let go, but you can also mute the strings by placing your finger on it instead of plucking it

  • yes thats a gud questiion as soon as u take off your finger from the fret it stops the sound

  • not true, it vibrates for a bit

  • @liamjenx What does "gud" mean?

  • hey just wanted to tell you that u are great bro and keep it up

  • Some people are saying that this isn't a helpful video but they are wrong in my opinion. You may not actually use this in a song (you probably won't) but things like this bring a better understanding of the instrument and how it works. Especially with the bass a good understanding of the instrument is needed.

  • You seem to know a lot. Help please :).

What are the scales useful for? Like, do they help with learning 12 bar blues or something?

    Thanks in advance.

  • its a diatonic major scale in G

  • what are the tabs for this?

  • are you retarded?

  • are you at the guitar center in robinson town centere in this video? u and that bass look familiar

  • The bass can be as dominant as any guitar lick. Soloing on the guitar is more highly praised than playing rhythm or chords and the bass is nothing BUT soloing. I just got a 350$ Ibanez acoustic 4 string bass and I solo all over that thing like an eagle in the sky. It's not the instrument, its the talent and dedication of the musician that plays it.

  • i'm only 11 so my hand is to small :[

  • It'll adjust the more you practice.

If not, get a mini bass.

There are guitar players who's hands are practically half the size of the guitar's body but they still play fluidly

  • This is like the best beginners movies cause all the others dont even show where to put your fingers

  • I admit as a guy who likes to learn new licks, solos and scales constantly bass usually has easy stuff to learn, but thats not bass fault thats the fault of bands not having bassists do what they should and create artistic music.I myself am a musician and my instrument is bass. If you want to learn how bass is good or just want some good bass tabs listen to Victor Wooten, Cliff Burton, Flea (RHCP), Les Claypool, & my above all fav bassist Ryan Martinie of MuDvAyNe. Trust me, check it.

  • Dude, BIG thumbs up!!! Most people will just mention Flea but you've gone above and beyond and mentioned some of my favorite bassists aswell. Ryan Martinie WAS my favorite bassist... Untill I started checking out Marco Rodi's clips on youtube.

I agree totally; bass doesnt have to be a basic instrument and doesnt have to be in the background. But most bassists these days just cop-out and conform to that stereotype.. I refuse to though

  • u forgot geddy lee

  • Ancient 70's rock proverb: He who underestimates and degrades the bass has no good tastes in music.

  • Those who say that bass is just an easy insrument is a stupid, no brainer and classifies the busy freeway as music. Maybe they only hear the piano or guitar parts in a band but it's the bass that gives life to the music. A band without a bass guitar is just like a pencil without lead, pointless.

  • It depends what kind of style of bass you play. Are you going to say that bassists like Flea or Les Claypool play the least important part of the song?

You can resign yourself to being a root-note playing bassist or you can learn some decent basslines and turn your volume up to a point where people can actually hear you.

You sound to me like the "you have a problem with your bass amp; I can hear it" kind of bassist.. I refuse to be that

  • fuck me in the goats ass, i meant to click the positve comment shit. either way i agree with you totally. i rock it loud and proud. i might not be the most technical or most talented but i have a wide variety of technique and i love playing bass.

  • 'cause you most likely suck

  • wow talk about someone who doesnt use the full potential of his bass

iv only been playing for a year but when i play by myaelf and people i make it so u would want to hear me i usally put the volume a lil lower then guitar and follow the guitar untill i kno its my time ot shine

  • listen to some primus....

  • you guys are a bunch of asses, all these videos and the others that go with them are doing are giving people an insight into some basic technique for bass playing. Love to see any of you do better you whiny little bi**hes

  • i agree completely with Moezzila's comment. Seeing as how I have played piano for 11 years and have played bass for 4. I can personally say that piano is hard until your muscle memory kicks in, as is true with most instruments. So I'm not going to sit here and tell you that bass sucks, because it definitely doesn't, and I'm not going to say piano is gay because, well, it definitely isn't it takes skill to play whichever you choose. Bottom line.

    Have a great day everbody.

  • piano is one of the best, besides bass, guitar, and drums

  • no. piano is one of the best SOLO instruments. for a band it sucks ass and believe me i know cause i played for 12 fuckin years and now i have to switch instruments cause no bands want me

  • now i like synthesizer more

  • what kind of music you play?

  • I am a bass player but admittingly, piano is much harder than both guitar and bass. Just contrasting this and your foolish comment.

  • I play both Piano and Bass, Piano is 1000 times harder. Dont be a faggot Pontoz, and actually try to play. I Bet you dont even know how to play an instrument.

  • and what the hell does piano have to do with this

  • go fuck yourself fuckin retard

  • What exactly constitutes a 'real instrument'?

  • That always depends.

  • ehm, did you learn how to play bass in an hour?

  • Nope its not...I played the piano for like 8 years and started playing the guiar about half a year ago...it's both easy in the beginning and getting fucking hard when you're playing advanced stuff...piano techniques you know I guess...but have you ever heard of tappig, alternate picking and so on...try this on a guitar and if you got it right and still think , that piano is so much harder..then you're a retard or a genius...

  • jamima is a douche. its arrogant assholes like you that make music suck. i wont knock any instrument so i wont say how gay you are for thinking piano is so much better. and an hour to learn a bass? what did you learn mary had a little lamb or what? c'mon u douche be real

  • all it took was an hour for me to get down the structure of where the notes were.... the bass is primarily a "beat" keeper, second to the drums. quite simple. EADG. Then half steps from there.

  • well if you wanna be that broad about "learning" bass than i know how to play piano guitar drums you name it. you might have the concept down but can you rip it like jaco, miller or wooten and if you can after one hoour of learning well i guess im sol. bottom line: dont hate appreciate you douchebag

  • i will agree that piano is harder do to the wider range, but bass is only boring to those who have no idea of its potential

  • Yeah, I second Moezilla

  • agree, bass is an excellent instrument which is used for way more then just keeping beats, any good bassist or what should be any good guitarist would know this.

  • This Is Very Helpful

  • scales are so boring, i should learn it but it takes the fun out of playing at least im my opinion.

  • nice one mate,

Brought a feneder jazz and can't play a note!

but your vids will really help.

  • I play both acoustic and electric guitar, I just got a bass and want to learn to play it.

  • I chose the bass because I thought it had a great sound and I like the thick strings!!!

  • i got the same bass

  • Can i play the Base guitar when i can Play the normal guitar? Are the notes on the same Place???

  • yup, you can play both. Bare in mind that the bass is a different instrument though, using different techniques and such =)

  • The top four strings of the bass are the exact same tuning as the top four strings of a guitar just one octave lower, so yes, the notes are in the same place for those four strings :)

  • bass is probably easier but some ppl like the electric guitar better

  • really, I always found guitar easier.

  • haha bass is easier? you dont know what your saying

  • Hi lol im just about to either buy a electric guitar or a electric bass and was just wondering which one to buy out of the two and which one is easier to learn and play.

  • dont go by how easy it is to play. Go by what you think is funner, your style. Are you a beat person, or a technical person. Personally i like bass, im not very good, just got it at Christmas i've been savin up. But yeah, tough decision its all about what style you like.

  • I'm probably intermediate at electric guitar. I ordered a Les Paul bass package from guitar center w/ Christmas money. I love bass & guitar.

Their both very fun and great instruments to play. So I prefer both of them.

  • I didnt see that necassary to add to my comment, because joemilburn was asking if he should buy EITHER an electric, or bass.

  • OK got it.

  • Man dont go with whats easier. Go to a music store and pick up a bass play it and see how it feels and do the same with guitar. I had this choice to make. I borrowed a bass and a guitar and i chose bass since bass is like the god instrument for blues and jazz lol

  • I always find guitars easier to play but I prefer the bass because of the hundreds of different techniques you can use such as popping, slapping, strumming, tapping, finger picking and plectrum picking along with a few others. I'm a metal bassist (no prejudgement please XD) and I love the sound of my bass in our music since I go for a really trebly tone.

  • I'd go with what you prefer, yeah. I find bass much harder to play than guitar but I much prefer playing the bass also so bare in mind what's more fun.

  • i've been playing bass for at least 8 years and i love it. it is a lot of fun. i get down with all types and styles from marcus miller to les claypool (my fav) to ben kaufmann (of yonder mountain string band which i highly recomment you ALL check out) i have found though that when it comes to just jammin out some songs for your friends as solo act guitar can be more fun. they are so closely related that you might as well learn both.

  • It's all good telling users what notes to play. Maybe explain why those are used? If i didn't already know from playing guitar. Id be confused. IF that made sense.

  • You do it, I know notes and stuff, but i need to learn some scales. I know this though, some people hold their thumb on the top of the neck while they play, its better to hold on the back because you get more pressure, and less chance of loosing a note.

  • a bass is a guitar

  • But it's 12 notes lower than an electric or acoustic guitar.

  • Bass is the foundation of the house that is music. Can'd have a house (guitar) without a foundation. Drums are he mortar and vocals are the roof. You can sure is hell have a house without a roof, no prob. You can have a house with no mortar, as long as the bricks are stacked with care. You can have a foundation with no house, but you can't have a house with no foundation.

  • got that right. bass is the heart of the music.

  • i dont realy care ther both pretty damn awesome

  • Because it's funner. I dont understand why someone would want to learn guitar of electric bass.

  • exactly

  • Because a bass instrument is almost required in any kind of band, this case a bass guitar.

  • Because bass is funnyer!

  • some people learns guitar and others learns bass.

  • your a retard john103193 because you can get the

    1)deaper sound

2)you use bass for mainly to keep rythm

    3)some people dont like guitar

4)you can use base in almost any kind of music

  • because bass kicks ass.....metting ajourned

  • omfg. can you show people how to acctually play the base, cos i have no money to get lessons :'(

  • awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • how did u get that box player that is soo cool
