I think the parasites are just that- parasites. Many creatures have that two-way mutuality type thing. The parasites are given a place to live, feed, and breed and in return help defend the larger monster, and possibly other things, like when those birds pick food out of an alligator's mouth. Not sure what they call it... something like a mutual, or symbiotic relationship?

guys. this is a promo for the movie cloverfeild, the story is this company, called slusho was drilling for an ingredient called seabed's nectar, a highly addictive substance for there slushy things. but one of there sateilights fell (can be seen at end of movie at " I had a good day") and the recovery disturbed the monster, it had been drinking seabed's nectar ( this caused its size ) and it attacked the oil rig and then the movie begins as it attacks manhattan

That's the point though. According to the 'Whistle Blower' documents leaked from the rig (part of the marketing campaign), there was no oil there. They were drilling for something else, people were going missing, and the last docs showed sonar pictures of the monster.
