In the September 17, 1985 episode, during the regular play, the word is "urgent," and Adrienne Barbeau says "Ur---" and stops herself. The judges didn't catch it at all. What's amusing is that you can see her making faces that say, "gee, should I fess up to that?" But she doesn't, since her loyalty is to her partner, not the opponent. (It's sort of like in baseball, if you're the runner and you think you were out, you still don't say anything.)
It was more than clear he made a "U" sound as in "flutter", but the host and the girl were EXPECTING flicker so much, it just didn't register for them that he actually said flutter.
I'm sure you've experienced similar things, when you're expecting someone to say one thing, so you'll mishear a different answer to be the one you're anticipating ^_^;
I love how sometimes when a contestant gives such an obviously illegal clue like when she says "peanut brittle" that there's a pause before the judge buzzes her. It's almost like you can imagine the judge looking left and right saying, "Did she really just say that?"
@Zynyster I hear a melding of flicker and flutter, and come down more on the flicker side. Possibly the accent with which one learned English comes into play here.
@disorganizedorg but what about this. Do you think she cheated by saying 'My eyes' while giving a physical clue by flickering her eyes? :-) He did say that she couldn't do that, lol
First of all, at 0:16 he said "flicker," you can clearly hear it, and so did Dick and Adrienne. Now, if they want to argue that her eyes flickering is an illegal physical clue, then whatever, that's kinda low and methinks they cheated him $300.
Of course, there was the one clip on one of excuseyou's Pyramid montages where Adrienne was really like that (as evidenced by the almost silence and the really short buzzer). :)
What is this addressing? They said that after commercial that he only said "flutter" as well as saying it would not have mattered if he had said "flicker" and why.
Maybe it would be great to re-post this with the "things that blossom" buzz as well, so as to document the whole story in one place of Adrienne Barbeau joining Jackee Harry and Dick Cavett.
Placing it as a video response to the Jackie Harry and Dick Cavett triple buzz videos would be great too.
Sounded like "flucker"

Adrienne asked him if he said "flicker". He said "I don't remember". What a liar! lol

@WrestlingHeretic In regular play, I assume that would have been taken as "err..." rather than "ur..." and non-communicative.

@Zynyster Yeah, that was, though her eyes 'flickering' wasn't really visible here.

At first I thought he said flicker too but I turned it up and listened closely and he definitely said flutter

Say to yourself: flick.
Now say: flut.
It sounds completely different! I heard flicker! WITH A "CK" SOUND!
And even so Adrienne wasnot fluttering or flickering her eyes, I think they needed a valid excuse to not give him the money.......

I love how Dick Clark would almost fight the judges when he thought they screwed up somewhere.

Haha I gotta admit, I thought I heard "flicker" too.

Candy is always a good way to console someone after a bad day. Someone should have given Adrienne a box of peanut brittle.

They said that he only said "flutter." He did not receive credit.
For two reasons, they had to explain the illegality as well:
1. Adrienne and the audience needed to understand for future reference that the type of clue (physical clue and referring to it) was illegal.
2. People need to know that Adrienne joined Jackee Harry and Dick Cavett in the triple-buzz club.

THANK YOU. I have written about this incident.

But, this is still wonderful.
