The Amen Chorus is surely one of the wonders of all of music. Love the opening fugal section of this version. I have heard the final statement split into two with a complete break. I think that is the most effective presentation.
I know people who were members of the ASO chorus during this time who've told me Maestro Shaw went through a couple of years where he'd allow his orchestra/chorus to cut loose in performance but wanted restraint in recordings. I believe they've said this is the recording where he decided he'd let them be themselves on record again, too. Excellent CD.
I have never heard a rendition of the final AMEN as celebratory and fast as this! Even though I prefer a more stately, spiritual approach (Schechen/London being my absolute favorite) I must say Shaw has completely won me over here. As usual, the chorus is magnificent under his awe-inspiring preparation.
Maestro SHAW was truely a Master! What a wonderfully light and lively yet majestic and stoic version! God bless and thanks for posting! Merry Christmas Everbody! :)
Yet not even Shaw could keep the choir from singing "Worthy izza lamb..."

You think this version is fast? You should check out Robert Shaw's earlier recording on RCA! It goes even faster than this..and it worked for me!
