  • Could the Wind Turbines of Chile Harm Blue Whales?

    Time AARON NELSEN

Wind turbines are increasingly recognized as a lethal hazard for birds, but some scientists now think they're also harmful to marine life. From half a mile away, the whooshing turbines emit an acceptable noise level of around 50 decibels; but if some of the Ecopower turbines are placed as close as 10 meters from the shoreline, they say, levels for ocean life could approach if not exceed a more harmful 100 decibels.

  • STEVEN CHU, human embarrassment

  • Solution is in competing robotic factories that "do it all under one roof", that is owning the dirt to mine, the lawyers to defend, the thousands of robotic arms and the hiring of solar PV installers. After further growth, then likewise for the batteries...

Or is it in LFTR ?

  • 2/2 watch?v=bgKr480RYc4 Obama's Former Green Jobs Czar and Communist, Van Jones

Admits Left is 'PRETENDING' Need for Regulations in Green Movement

  • Exactly.

  • in a globalised world, innovate or die

  • I also believe that an Australian was responsible for developing photovoltaic technology to the point where it became economically viable.

    Oh wait, he said that.

  • This "invented in Australia but developed overseas" thing is typical of the reluctance of Australian industry & government to invest in Australian technology.

    Cases in point..

    The photocopier

    the power lawn mower

    the rotary clothes line

    the orbital engine

    the in car radio

the windscreen wiper (also she was a woman)

Bluetooth technology (the Commonwealth Scientific & Investigative Research Organisation. CSIRO)

There have been many examples of this BS but that's all I can come up with right now.

  • @paspax very true go aussie.

  • @paspax It happens in New Zealand too. The disposable syringe is the first one to come to mind. It's an issue that both nations could maybe work on together?

  • Thanks for the video. I hope this spoutnik moment will come and you guys will wake up and rise to the challenge. But on the other hand, judging by some comments here, I have serious doubts:) China is in ahurry to clean its acts (just two days ago they shut the whole city-Shangai, send evrybody to their home, kept vehicles and power plants off just to breath) So they need those technologies, and fast.. I can't blame them if sometimes they don't play by the rules..

  • I'm surprised how many average people have no idea about these statistics.

  • Thanks for the video greenman. I saw Chu on C-Span, but didn't have a chance to watch the entire speech. I'm glad someone chose to uploads key portions of it to this otherwise vast bastion of stupidity (that we all call YouTube.)

That analogy of the faulty house wiring was superb, IMO. When 1, 2, 500, 7000 expert electricians tell you "Do something to replace your faulty wiring" you most likely should heed their advice. Frantically searching for 1 electrician that says otherwise is reckless.

  • @coil311

Yet that is exactly what the Fox news/talk radio/denier internet machine does, and the irresponsible electricians of the world end up doing very well for themselves.

  • @coil311 Good analogy, except deniers generally search for an oil employed geologist.

In both cases, something fuzzy and hanging from a chandelier

(not a spider) otherwise known as an amateur electrician would be

    more appropriate.

Never fear.. when it becomes air apparent that global warming is in the home stretch, sometime in the next ten years, conservatives will latch on and start some war on the environment. An inappropriate response, no doubt.

  • @coil311 do you listen when 1, 2, 500, 7000 BP experts tell you how to deep sea drill? What most uneducated (99.999%) including myself want to know. What the problem? (not the world is going to end give us unlimited money)...WHEN A CONSENSUS OF GLOBAL SCIENTIST TAKE A VOW OF POVERTY IT WOULD LEND TO THEIR CAUSE. WHY SHOULD THEY? TO SAVE THE PLANET OR THE FUTURE OF MANKIND. When they think it is willing to sacrifice greatly than many others will follow.

  • @hellasow

I am not a scientist, although I am an undergrad in a science curriculum, but I think I know enough to respond to your suggestion that scientists aught to take a vow of poverty. The notion underlying your idea is that to acheive a low carbon economy we will need to "do without." That is silly. What is contemplated is that we should "do differently."

Chu suggests that we invest in the future and ourselves. We should do so.

  • @bluetwinky My notion which i admit i probably made poorly. The people that will suffer the most if we tax carbons. Is the poorest people. What is the burden on the people making the claim(increase funding)? A claim like the world is going to end(or very bad things) needs evidence that can be seen and understood. Not trust us their is a consensus. There is at least a leaning for scientist to tilt any finding toward global warming since if you have a contrary opinion, you wont get funding

  • @bluetwinky i don't want a response of... oh there must be a global conspiracy. oil companies, drug makers, don't have to sit in a room to discuss what is in their best interest. Any finding to a climate scientist that is done that does not support an exciting result could result in less funding. Would scientist support drugs that were not safe or effective for a money? I am not saying this is what is happening but it is certain possible.

  • @hellasow

The idea that climate scientists are doing it all for the money is a canard.

People in the academic world are usually people who would make a whole lot more money else where.

There is a shortage of clever men and women who understand mathmatics, not a surplus.

  • @bluetwinky there are very many talented people in medical and oil/industries these places don't exactly have surplus of skilled employees? But these industries seem to find people who are willing to sell sketchy science...

  • @bluetwinky i am up for the idea that we should invest in renewable resources. The understandable evidence that scientist have made readily available does not constitute major taxes. To me it also make more sense instead of trying to get 6 billion people away from not burning carbon(which is likely not going to happen) to advance much more cost effective ways to reduce the earth temp if that is such a dire problem.

  • @hellasow

It will not be easy to get 6 billion people to stop burning carbon, but it will happen.

    The question is how.

It may happen when we run out of fuel to burn, or it may happen as the result of government intervention. That is the idea. The point Chu makes about California being more efficient is true. What you may not know is that the efficiency was acheived as a result of the state's intervention, and it does not cost the user more. That is to say, the poor do not suffer.

  • @bluetwinky if the cost of energy goes up it effects the poor the most especially other non developed countries. carbon fuels are way cheaper than any renewable. If renewable energy was cheaper and had enough supply, people would be using it. Your using California as an example of being efficient really? (i really think were both talking about different things) What in general do you propose? what the problem? what the solution?

  • @hellasow

We are both up on the idea of better energy technology.

If there is a difference between us it is that I feel that government intervention is needed. In California this took the form of regulations mandating real standards for efficiency. The industry said it couldn't be done, and then when they had to do it they handed the problem over to the scientists and engineers and they found out that it could be done. And it was cheeper and better.

    Funny isn't it?

  • @bluetwinky i am not sure what your citing as your example. i watched this video sometime ago and have no clue or interest in watching it again. Where does chu talk about this? Maybe later i will rewatch the whole thing.

  • yea, this is better

  • Prediction:

Someone, at some point, is going to say, "If this guy loves China so much, he should go live there!"

  • @lazyperfectionist1 if this guy loves China so much, he should go live there!

  • @WouldbeSage You see? Damn I'm good.

  • @WouldbeSage So, in other words, back in the late 50's when Russia launched Sputnik and showed us that they were surpassing us in technology, you are the person who would have told everyone saying everyone wanting to catch up and beat the Russians that they were commies and should move to Russia.

It's not that anyone is in love with China. It's that we want America to be the leader in technology! That's what drives our economy and we are at risk of losing.

  • @robhoneycutt LOL!

  • @WouldbeSage So, you don't mind if China kicks our butt in the world market?

  • @robhoneycutt

for deniers, it's always ideology over country, and over planet.

  • Did you lose your voice?

  • yea thats good. :D

  • Really people request music for this information? What the fuck.. I'm seriously not feeling the 'zeitgeist' mood that kind of music brings.

  • Well done, Dr. Chu!!

  • If it doesn't make a profit it's not a US goal. And the high speed rails are a negative net investment. The US government would rather bail out banks than actually serve the people and invest in a high speed energy efficient electric rail system because it's not a profitable venture for big business. So instead we support the export of jobs and manufacturing and both our industrial and general infrastructure is going to hell. The ultimate goal is to privatize the US infrastructure,

  • @hac5x3 Green energy DOES make a profit. Just ask Fox News.

  • greenman, have you ever heard that China's sulfur output actually helps to slow the effects of global warming? When they clean up, and that goes away, could things get worse, or do you think the steps they take will be productive enough to have the same effect and then some?

  • Excellent upload, Greenman!

  • The music adds much-needed gravitas.

  • @martyyu

some people seem to think so.

I probably should have added a voice over reading the text for those that listen to these while working, but I'm done with this, I think.

  • @greenman3610

I would have appreciated voice overs, I seem to use youtube for listening to video most of the time. Great job regardless

  • @greenman3610 What do you mean by done with this? I'm feeling a bit worried by that wording.

  • @JackingtonKensington

having done one remix of this video, I am moving on to the next one. ;^)

  • @greenman3610 Phew, I was seriously stressed there, I love the vids, I've said it before and I'll say it again, I still think you're criminally undersubscribed, keep up the good work.

  • @JackingtonKensington

    keep spreading them around.

  • Steven Chu is the man.

  • Pretty informative.

  • I'm confused did you post this twice?

  • @TrueMetis

I had a request for music.

    I aim to please.

  • Title correction?

  • @lostburro the only thing I notice is the music

  • First!
