@efykehyg i went ahead and verified this. Given the scene elements are the same, man walking, same boot, ice etc, the walking direction/intention and suspence are completely different. The Screaming Men definetly had more interesting elements, yet, imo, i tend to prefer Guido's short, even if it seems to be a oneliner/gimmick. The Screaming Men's cinematography and especially musical/midi score in that opening scene (imho)...as if you're watching a regional soap opera.
The other day I was in my SUV taking my kids to soccer practice, when I slid on the ice. THAT took real courage, not what this guy is doing. Later that day at Starbucks I texted my raquetball partners and told them about it, which is more than this guy on the ice can do.
I saw a longer version (the full version?) of this at the Hirshorn in Washington DC. It's really quite striking on a large screen, and the audio of grinding and crunching ice adds a lot to the atmosphere. Strongly recommended.
i found it far more moving as an actual film (at least i think it was). something about the grainy flicker and the better sound - the rumble of the ship thru the ice. GvdW is totally nuts! so is the world! i am humbly awed by his simple artistry.
and a comment i can't resist. isn't it amusing how youTube's "related videos" engine thinks that this has something to do with ice breakers? oh yah, i want to watch more ice breakers, nice big machines crunching thru the ice....
It's just best to interpret what this movie is about yourself, rather than ask someone else what it's supposed to be about. What you're seeing is literally "a huge ship following a man walking on ice". Take it however you will and roll with it.

The original is the opening scene of the documentary film Huutajat- screaming Men,
where conductor Petri Sirviö stops the very same ship. Much, much stronger piece.
Poor Guido Copycat

Sometimes the ice cracks in front line from the boat for hundred yards in a second... This guy was very lucky...

Perhaps we are supposed to feel like the walking man. Some crisis, disaster, or at least our own death is approaching but you're not seeing.

i dont get it. are we supposed to expect that the ship will sink? or that the person is walking on water?
