@PrincessSearrah I swear to God, it was when i was listening to this song one day that I knew I had to end a 12 year relationship and i feel the same way about this song and band!
August & Everything After is one of the finest American albums of the nineties and the band sounds like a convincing cross between R.E.M. and Van Morrison.

In a lifetime of song writing, this song could be one that makes the writer feel worthy. It made me aware of my lover's interest, and pointed out hope, but it still breaks my heart each time I hear it. You don't want to waste your life....
hell yes i was just ab whipper-snapper until my father introduced me to August and Everything After...he first heard A Murder of One on the radio and bought the CD..classic...classic...classic
Someone is tripping the computer so that I am forced to listen to this song in increments . . . they really know how to bum me out well; and, I guess, enjoy the place. Well, I'll let them have their hour and keep on keeping on.
Someone is tripping the computer so that I am forced to listen to this song in increments . . . they really know how to bum me out well, and, I guess, enjoy the place. Well, I'll let them have their hour and keep on keeping on.
crazy... i listened to this cd so many times back in the day... all this time later i can still sing along to the whole thing... still my fave album of theirs
This is the conclusion of one of the best-written albums of all time, top to bottom. I have yet to hear anyone pour their entire heart, body, and soul into their music like Adam did on this album.
In my opinion, one of the best albums of all time. Only a handful of albums can you start on track one and listen to the entire thing straight through and not skip tracks. Adam Duritz is an amazingly talented songwriter and they are even better live than they are on their CDs. One of the very few musical performers who never "sold out" to become more mainstream, they have stayed true to themselves and to the music they want to make.
@irishpride630 I realize this comment is almost a year old, but I felt compelled to reply. Don't pussy out by saying "In my opinion...," make a statement. August and Everything After is one of the greatest albums of all time. Anyone who doesn't feel something (whether love or hate, joy or rage, whatever), after hearing it, simply does not have a soul. That is a gorram fact.
This cd is one of my favorite of all time. I love Pearl jam all the way to metal, this album took me someplace different though. Still love it, one of the few that you can listen to the cd from start to end and like every song. That don't happen anymore.
I listen to their songs in really hard times and at the happiest times. I lost my daughter about 7 months ago. I listened to this song over and over again and it helped me get through it.
To me, the vast majority of platinum albums from the 90s have not aged well at all. This one is a exception to the rule. What an amazing debut. And this song is the payoff. Maybe the saddest-sounding major key song ever.
I remember listening to this album (only this album) in my teenage years. I was 12 when I first heard of the Counting Crows..1994 i think... Now 17 years later its still on my top 10 albums of all time.
I used to play this song over and over when i ws falling for a girl who was with someone else she wasnt happy with... never thought she would end up being with me now and we have an amazing beautiful family! :)
@TheAlexio87 I feel glad things came over like that for you... It's by no means the way things roll for the vast majority of us, so, lucky you. I'll stay here, assuming I was not worth it, and most likely I'm not. Yet, I'm not envious, sure enough you deserve it!!!!!!
This album and the Cranberries- Everybody Else... album played the songs of young love and broken hearts for me, and always refresh memories from a better time.
This Cd got me through some of the hardest times in my life. Broken hearts, depression, some of my lowest points. Time and Time Again became a themesong of my life for years. Life is wonderful now, but the memories still live on, the this CD has a permanent place in my rotation. I have 5 MP3 players full of music to listen to in the car, and not one omits a song from this album.
@jYlY5457 This CD did the same thing for me. Depression, awkward early college years and a love I knew I'd never have. Still one of my all time favorite CD's.
@Gunnerkelly At the time I posted it, yes. One of the iPods was stolen, and I have converged all of the music onto my phone. Got to be too much to keep track of. I still have the players, mid you... just don't really use them anymore.
I didn't like the counting crows at first because of how the media jammed Mr. Jones down our throats every time you turned on the radio but this is a great album with some lost gems that were much better than Mr. Jones, like this one. I miss the early/mid 90's, last great era of rock and roll.
@rodneyracoon I just wrote that the 90s' were the last great decade of music on the Rain King Video[well it really is not a video just like this its just a picture of the August album] But anyway well said and unfortunatly true.In the 90s I was always discovering great new bands today we have Justin Beiber American idol Lady Ga ga and rap.
I broke up with my girlfriend then three years later I heard she's at this party so I went there, took her aside and played her this song. About 8 months later she became my wife. Counting Crows...you got the job done dudes hahahaha.
"I walk along these hillsides, in the summer 'neath the sunshine, I am feathered by the moonlight...fallin' down on me." One of the most beautiful parts to any song.
I wish i had this guys singing voice. Just imagine how amazing it would be to be able to play this great song amazingly live. My life would be complete.
This song has it all...as does the album. I remember when it came out, just wearing out the CD from palying it so much, and thinking...who the hell are these guys? And how is Adam Duritz such a great songwriter? Pure poetry.
Figured out the title of this song. A murder is the term for a group of crows, like a pride of lions or a flock of seagulls. Except, if you ever see what you think is a group of crows - a 'murder' - they're almost certainly not crows, they're rooks - crows are solitary birds. So a murder of crows is only ever likely to be just the one. Counting crows... a murder of one! :)
Best album of the 90's period.Hell of an accomplishment when you consider the competition: Nevermind,Siamese Dream,Ten,Dirt. The list go's on and on.Oh, and thanx ceeceerider, Always wondered about the origins of that verse.
"One for sorrow, two for joy; three for a girl, and four for a boy. Five for silver, six for gold, and seven for a secret that's never been told."
In English, Welsh and Celtic lore birds are a symbol of power, luck and happiness. They are considered to be an omen. The lyrics are from and Old English folk rhyme, and refer to the sighting of magpies (crows), as an omen. Just a useless piece of trivia about one of my all time favorite songs.
@DDT777 So many love this song as I do. They feel the power of the song but don't understand the parable of the lyrics.
The Numerology is interesting,
Murder of One, track 11, The number of destruction and judgment, the number of the death of man. Further, 1 = unity, 1+1 unity with God, which is offered to man with the covenant of Jesus Christs blood, The Murder of One
You know, i'm a 90's kid who grew up with chris isaac but somehow changed to All That Remains, etc, and heavier stuff. Yet i still find every single one of these guys songs motivating and heartfelt
If you think about it, the title of this song goes really well with the name of the band. The band is Counting CROWS (duh) and the song in a MURDER of One. A murder of crows is the name for a flock of crows and saying a murder of one could be saying a group of one. Just tossing that tidbit out there. Awesome song. I would also recommend the artists the Dave Matthews Band, Coldplay, Sting/Police, and Matchbox Twenty. By the Counting Crows I recomend Rain King and Mrs. Potter's Lullaby. -K
why is there four thumbs down on this comment? this album is probably the soundtrack of my life. im still to find a more complete album and for it to be a debut is just astonishing. every song on this album is top draw. theres a few that have come close but i always come back to this one.
You can check out God's story...the evil one doesn't have to know... you don't wanna waste your life...change change change...get saved... your soul inside will fly.
I don't know how they do it. This song and this album will never get old. ever.

´Penultimate´ means ´second to last´. Isn´t this the last song on the album? I don´t remember. Shame shame shame.
