My Aunt, Veronica Geritas was a ward sister here from the mid 50's till her retirement she used to take us to visit her ward. Most patients on her ward where there for the simple fact they had nowhere else to go they'd been committed most of their lives.
My Mum, Dad and Aunty worked there for years, spotted my dad on one of the Gala videos, spend many a year playing in the hospital grounds as kids, great times...
My mum was a patient at Rainhill in the 60s a couple of times. She had ECT which must have been terrifying for her. She made a good recovery though and died in 1989 just hours after holding her new-born grand-daughter in her arms.
I was there because I simply had postnatal depression. I'm Australian, and was distressed (homeless) and homesick at the time. I believe to this day I just needed counselling. It was a living nightmare. Thanks to God, it was only that a bombastic friend from Essex came over and queried what was happening that I was discharged so quickly - I recall trying to escape over that 10ft wall too! I was in the care of two doctors, Clark and Walsh. They were like Jeckl and Hyde...
my mates mum shelia johnson use to work there we used to take her clothes to her so she could go on a night out it was a long walk from clock face to the hospital but we loved doing it RIP shelia
