Bill Maher takes himself too seriously. He's acquired a few facts, some good presentation skills, and some funny facial expressions. But for substance, he's the poster-child for the phrase "when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail". Why do people think this guy's so smart?
This would have been better as a three-way with Maher, Franken and Baxter, who at least all were prepared to have a discussion.
Baxter's remarks about a Chinese threat on LA reflected a failure to understand deterrence. Every city, everywhere is a potential target always. That's the deterrent. All a missile shield adds to the equation is that it creates the (arguably dangerous) illusion that the country who has it can do anything they please abroad without serious fear of reprisal.
yeah sure the chinese would destroy los angeles, right before they're entire country would be destroyed.
the truth is the americans sent a carrier battle group down there to the scene and Ta da! some how the missle threats finnally stopped. The chinese know better then to mess with the USA. But then again that was then and this is now.
this show was on May 23rd 2001 Less than 4 months before 9/11 and they are talking about terrorist attacks from Iraq... How wrong they were, along with Bush
One of the most dramatic moments came when Mr. Freeman quoted a Chinese official as asserting that China could act militarily against Taiwan without fear of intervention by the United States because American leaders `care more about Los Angeles than they do about Taiwan,' a statement that Mr. Freeman characterized as an indirect threat by China to use nuclear weapons against the United States.
