From my understanding, the case was already settled and he'd pled guilty, jumped bail, and then hid out from the punishment what he'd admitted rightly deserved. He essentially hit the pause button, so what his victim thinks decades on doesn't matter. Besides, it sets a bad precedent, that all one needs to do is hightail it out of the country long enough and you can get away with anything.

That said, how anyone can defend someone who did this to a child is staggering.

From what I understand of the Statute of Limitations is that he plead guilty, and as a result, voids the relevance of the limitations. Pleading guilty is equivalent to being convicted, so the statute of limitations is no longer applied. It only refers to the amount of time the government can pursue a case against somebody, not the amount of time after a conviction has been reached.

So it's not a question of whether there is still a case, it's about punishing a rapist who fled from justice.

Well, no. The conviction for the original rape still applies. It's not like it's time served. There will not be another trial for the rape, that already went through. He plead guilty, so he was, by definition, convicted. There will be no other trial. It's just a matter of whether the American government will actually apply the sentence, or assume his "exile" (which is a dumb term, because he fled, he wasn't exiled from the community) will be considered as time served, which would be stupid.
