The first movie by Scott had no Queen. Yet the Alien proved to be highly inteligent. It realized the self destruct of the ship and walked right in to the escape capsule not attacking Ripley untill the ship started.
Not to mention the Android is very fascinated about the creature and mentions its inteligence and who knows he might have even comunicated with it but that remains a mystery since he never confirmed ot denied it when the crew asked him.

The elevator was probably automative and their "sensory" targets their prey and other electrical readouts so they'd easily destroy those.
If they obtain memories, it means that they can be very very intelligent if their host is scientist or just very clever human. Because with memory comes knowledge. On the other hand that knowledge may be mixed with their killing instincts, so they use obtained knowledge only in order to kill someone or creating a Hive and not for creating usual human technology (if their host could know how to create it).

For all we know they were like lightening, and shot through her, fast enough to avoid shock, etc etc... It's a movie anyway, there's no reason to take it all seriously :)
