For those of u who are thinking that this deer is young because of his antlers, he's not the deer have peek in antler size then they slowly decline. The older they get the harder the nutritions are for them to keep in their body. The size of the rack has to do with nutrients along with genetics. They way I can tell this is an old deer is because he has a really deep neck. The tighter the neck the younger they usually are.

His last good rack was when he was 11; after that it just got sparser each year. His last year they were like sticks, and he showed no interest in the does. He got thin and arthritic, and spent his last month laying in the sunny patches. One day he went to sleep and didn't wake up. We found him in his favorite spot, resting peacefully forever.

Wildlife officer would have probably told you to let nature run it's course. I called them last season because of a young buck that had been struck by a passing vehicle and thats what they told me to do as long as the deer was safely off of the roadway. The posture of this deer is almost identical to the one that I called the Wildlife officer about. Looks like a deer that got hit to me.
Hooves? You identify a mature Buck by his body structure. I to have killed several big white tails all over the US. If you didn't kill this deer and pull his teeth frame, there's no verification of how old the deer actually is. His hooves clearly wouldn't be an issue because he is mal nourished.
No reason why you didn't put this deer down. And from the looks of his horns, must not be to old. The deer itself doesn't look like it's going downhill do to age, but sickness!

I know because I've killed huge whitetails that couldn't have been less than 7 years old but were 4-points. Antlers are not a good judge of age.

@messyside1 the deer drop their ANTLERS every year and grow new ones. This vid was probably taken in the spring kuz they drop them in late December thru January. He died of old age. You can tell by the fur color.

It's leg is infected. It's right hock is bleeding and the whole leg is swollen. Thats why it got up weird. Deer, cows and other 2 hooved animals get up with their back end first. Horses get up with their front end first. It had trouble getting up since it couldnt put weight on its back end. It never put weight on that leg the whole video. It's probably died from infection.

im doing a deer course in the uk that deers a pricket i.e a very young deer only on its first set of antlers that poor bugger is just very very ill maybe previous shooting wound from the day before or a very bad night fully exposed to harsh weather conditions
@charliecrane1213 The deer is only a spike, however that does not determine age, as bucks get older past their peak they loose points every year stead of gaining, but some keep the their prime mass in their points each season even if decreasing.
It's still hard to tell. You never really know unless you check their teeth.
Exposure to weather is not really a problem for deer. They kinda live out there and have adapted to harsh weather conditions...

Since I got started with hunting I've been studying the herd that frequents my hunting spot with severe intensity. The spikes I've seen have never gained any other points, even when offered better food. It had been determined that their genetics are simply just bad.
Ah, so sad. But we all eventually go that way. And hunting is not cruel , factory farming is cruel. I could never hunt but I respect hunters who are good marksmen and make their own stakes. Stop factory farming !
You're right, each day is another adventure waiting to be found. I would have done what you all did that day. Take a few pictures, shoot a video, maybe even feed the little buddy an apple, or two, too. Just to make its last few days on this green earth happier and less painful. My favorite thing I like about hunting is the many things I find out in the woods I stumble upon. Course', nabbing myself a nice 10 pointer isn't so bad, either, of course!

Looking at this from a vets point of view here, this deer is cow hocked in the back standing at an oddly wide angle in the front, shaggy and wobbly. he only had a single spikes and his tail has not yet shed out also his neck and body do not align correctly as well as he seems fairly disoriented, concluding that he is a one year old maybe two year old with slow bone growth and most likely has either A) rabies, which would account for the stagering and stance or B)CWD-cronich wasting disease

Just to shed light on it, some symptoms of cwd are rough looking coats, deer seems dizzy and lethargic, ears just kinda droop and hang down, typically stand with wider stance so they don't just topple over, there is more, go look up the video called shedding light on cwd and you will see all this info, not good for deer herds, report this to your local wildlife commission ASAP, this is an open and shut case
when deer get old they stop growing big racks and go back down to a spike or even bloody spots on the top of there head where antlers go. besides you can tell hes old by the way his muscles and body looks and his head

After putting him out of his misery, should have cut out the retropharengial lymph nodes (I'd be suprised if ya'll knew where to find those) and send them to your state wildlife lab to get tested for CWD and ask for the blue tongue test also!!!!

Many of the infirmities of old age that you listed, could very well be signs that the animal is sick with one or more virulent infections/viruses / who knows what.
this deer wasnt 7 or 8 or 100 years old. he was probly 3 or 4 because bucks normaly have a shorter noise and a wirder skull. he had to be diseased with something that deer can get and i cant reamber but it is rare in all states but it never showed up in PA, were im from
@sniperNghillie97 -- yes, "diseased," is the more descriptive term for what we are apparently agreeing on....I didn't know whether or not some of the antler development, the skull as you pointed out, and the general "look" of the animal said to me she was much younger...but then, it's been years since I've been out in the meadows at the edges, watching from the treeline where they couldn't see us. She just looked like some of the near-prime deers in the shape and comportment of her legs.

To the guy who thinks this deer can't be old because it's only a spike. spend some time in the woods! It is possible for a deer to only be a spike throughout life as the antler formation is solely dependent upon genetics and nutrition. I killed a very large spike once that we aged at 6 1/2 years. This deer may not have been as old as 7 or 8, but was obviously in poor health. That happens sometimes in nature. Still a cool experience though. Thanks for sharing.

For all you people bashing him for not putting it down how do you suppose he kills it? He says he is exploring a new hunting area which could be miles away from his firearm. So what is he to do, hit it in the head with a rock? He thought it was sick so he didn't contact the DNR.
Should have put it out of his misery that would have been the kindest thing. You also have to be careful with tuberculosis contamination. From what I could see that is what was wrong with him, which in that case DNR should have been contacted ASAP. Last thing you want is for that to spread! I wouldn't hunt those grounds especially after seeing him in his condition.

@66SiK He's a full grown buck with only spike antlers witch means he has grown up, gotten big horns, and then digressed in size as he got older. That's what deer do, and also a good reason to have hunts to manage deer herds.

Since I got started with hunting I've been studying the herd that frequents my hunting spot with severe intensity. The spikes I've seen have never gained any other points, even when offered better food. It had been determined that their genetics are simply just bad.

You're right, each day is another adventure waiting to be found. I would have done what you all did that day. Take a few pictures, shoot a video, maybe even feed the little buddy an apple, or two, too. Just to make its last few days on this green earth happier and less painful. My favorite thing I like about hunting is the many things I find out in the woods I stumble upon. Course', nabbing myself a nice 10 pointer isn't so bad, either, of course!

Looking at this from a vets point of view here, this deer is cow hocked in the back standing at an oddly wide angle in the front, shaggy and wobbly. he only had a single spikes and his tail has not yet shed out also his neck and body do not align correctly as well as he seems fairly disoriented, concluding that he is a one year old maybe two year old with slow bone growth and most likely has either A) rabies, which would account for the stagering and stance or B)CWD-cronich wasting disease

Just to shed light on it, some symptoms of cwd are rough looking coats, deer seems dizzy and lethargic, ears just kinda droop and hang down, typically stand with wider stance so they don't just topple over, there is more, go look up the video called shedding light on cwd and you will see all this info, not good for deer herds, report this to your local wildlife commission ASAP, this is an open and shut case

After putting him out of his misery, should have cut out the retropharengial lymph nodes (I'd be suprised if ya'll knew where to find those) and send them to your state wildlife lab to get tested for CWD and ask for the blue tongue test also!!!!

She just looked like some of the near-prime deers in the shape and comportment of her legs.

To the guy who thinks this deer can't be old because it's only a spike. spend some time in the woods! It is possible for a deer to only be a spike throughout life as the antler formation is solely dependent upon genetics and nutrition. I killed a very large spike once that we aged at 6 1/2 years. This deer may not have been as old as 7 or 8, but was obviously in poor health. That happens sometimes in nature. Still a cool experience though. Thanks for sharing.

Should have put it out of his misery that would have been the kindest thing. You also have to be careful with tuberculosis contamination. From what I could see that is what was wrong with him, which in that case DNR should have been contacted ASAP. Last thing you want is for that to spread! I wouldn't hunt those grounds especially after seeing him in his condition.
