In the UK they wouldn't let you crush fridges because their too scared of letting 'harmful' CFC gases into the atmosphere. There is a massive stockpile of them at a disused airport.

@superlurf No not in the UK they were certainly still in use and called CFC in 2002. I believe they are now called ODS ozone depleting substances and they are in the insulating foam inside the fridge panels and thats what they worry about.
