I replaced the ride in January with a Sabian Apx solid ride and the hihat is replaced with a Masterwork Iris cymbal. Also a Sabian HHX crash and a Sabain AAX crash was added.

I simple such a horribly tuned kit (well tuned B/B would never sound that awful even in small rooms, plus O rings everywhere o.O) actually sounded ok when recorded with microphones....

You gave the answer yourself: Yes, i know to use a drum, since it sound good when miced. Tuning is the most important part of a good sounding drum.

The face that it sounds aweful without the mics, has nothing to do with the tuning. It is recorded with a photo-camera. And it's common know that camera-microphones are bad.

Another problem is the acoustics: This is a small room with concrete walls....

Why do people buy killer sets and stick crappy cymbals on them? Just wondering. I did the opposite, small entry level kit, 23 Zildjians. A Customs, X Customs, K's, SFX.

- I started with a crappy set (Go! & Osan) and crappy cymbals (Paiste, Meinl).

- Then i got a middle class set (Pearl Export), still got the crappy cymbals

- Then i bought some high-class cymbals (4x Zildjian A Customs and new Sabian hihat).

- Then i bought this high-class set (Tama Starclassic) and now i'm starting to 'update' the other cymbals. I stick with Stagg-china's. They sound awesome imo. Still need new ride.

I have 2 small remarks; First about your toms, they sound the same even your floor toms sound like you normal toms.

Your cymbals; why do you have an expensive brand like Zildjian mixed with crappy (Belgian) Stagg's?

About the floortoms: In my opinion, sound is a matter of personal taste. I like to have all (floor)toms have the same sound, but only pitched from high to low.

About the cymbals: Cymbals don't have to be expensive to sound good. I really love the sound of the Stagg-China's. Especially the 18" Stagg DH China.

But yes, i still want to have a new ride-cymbal (The Sabian B8 doesn't do the job anymore) and a new splash: The Stagg SH Splash has lost its power.

Well, if you compare all those cymbals one after one, the HHX sounds the best, but when i just play a song or whatever, the hhx sounds very weak compared to the customs.

I think that if you compair two similar cymbals like the A custom Projection crash and the AXX X-plosion Fast crash you will notice that Sabians wins.

Klinkt verre van een electrische kit maar ik snap wat je bedoeld. Door die mics klinkt het zowiezo anders, and dan EQ'd hij het nog + not compressie en reverb.

Als je het in een volledige mix hoort (kijk maar sommige van zijn recente filmpjes) kan je echt horen dat het niet electronisch is.

2. I prefer the Shure. It picks up more attack.
