I've been in Vieques twice back in the mid '70's. Both times with the Marine Corps. I had no idea this was such a political hot-potato! As for bombing being so bad, well, some of those people in Vieques incorrectly stated that this is the only place that the U.S. bombs its own soil. No, that is incorrect; they do so in North Carolina at Camp LeJeune and at Ft. Bragg. They also do it in Minnesota and California. I'm sure in other areas as well.
Rabin is not Viequense. He hijack the issue for his personal/political gain. He does not talk on my behalf. He makes money of this. He thinks he owns the museum. He does not represent the people of Vieques.
Despite of everything, I have to ask where is Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton after may jobs were lost and some of the workers left because they needed the money . Sorry, but one bad thing I heard of my Puerto Rico is that they are so dependent on Government assistance, As long as they don't wean themselves from that, they are not going to be independent. The wealthy won't help because logically they know the independent government will go after all their money
I can releate to this. I really can relate to this. Hawaii, the 50th State of the United States. (Or so it seems seeing as there is no annexation treaty between Hawaii and the U.S..) One of the islands has also suffered the same faith as Vieques. On the island of Kahoolawe, after the attack of Peral Harbor, the U.S. military seized the island, and for more then 40 years, the island was used as a bombing and training ground. Under protest, the U.S. eventually left. So Vieques, I feel your pain!
Jade2030 its been a long time since you commented but do you really think PR can survive without the US as an Independent country I don't think sooooo.
Well the US pulled out you got what you wanted, hope you dont miss the income. The us did not attack its own people it was attacking LAND in very obvious and designated weapons testing area.
IF people went running over there to see what was up and were killed maybe you shouldn't go over there. Why dont you just become an independent country and stfu?
Jessie is political orient, not humanitarian. He moves on things that help him in the long run, your issues in the street do not help him.
@ThePixelChaos No, you stfu, look at Cape Cod, MA. Also the US doesn't want to give PR it's independence and we still are a fucking colony, the US IS UNDER THE OBLIGATION TO EITHER GRANT FULL STATEHOOD OR INDEPENDENCE. YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT MY COUNTRY SO DON'T COMMENT ALLRIGHT?
ONE BIG question? Why hasn't Jesse Jackson, his wife and all these protesters put just as much energy in stopping the blood shed on the streets of Puerto Rico?
You people posting comments here have no idea of what's really going on in P.R. U.S.A is not the contemporary liberator. They are exploiting, abusing, and taking advantage of the Latin American countries, more in P.R. since they own the island basically, and now the Middle East . P.R. WILL NOT be part of the U.S. because they DO NOT want it that way. Additionally, P.R. is destroyed because of U.S. companies financial interests in P.R. The U.S. is NOT A LIBERATOR...look at Iraq...for God's sake.
Thanks. Yes, and the funny thing is that people who comment negatively do not know what's really going on. I'm sick of hearing that it's P.R.'s fault when I know it's not. I'm Puerto Rican too, and it's sad that even many Puerto Rican themselves are so narrow-minded as to comment negatively about the Navy overthrow in Vieques. I'm very glad we did it! And glad to see supportive Puerto Ricans too.
The ones that live on welfare are the most fervent advocates for keeping the relantioship. And, some professionals too because they believe that if something goes wrong uncle sam will be able to help them. They use the rhetoric of federal benefits, but they do not acknowledge other things, they're lying. Until Puerto Ricans are able to see the U.S. for what it is they won't see the light in independence. All this is part of the colonial society we are living in. Hopefully it will happen soon.

am puerto rican and really proud all ur comments are stupid,i agree just in US was damaging the island with bomb, but US really help in the economy if u dont want to be in Puerto rico go to Cuba and then u can talk all the shit u want to talk about U.S,am Puerto rican and AMERCAN too,U.S had help the world and free people ,dont talk about israel because americans safe jews, and many innocents in irak, they also want oil but they safe the world, thanks americans hitler didnt take over the world
That "pebble in the shoe" approach only works because the US and the Navy are astonishingly humane. Playing "human shield" to a lot of other nations would simply make them additional targets who would be promptly destroyed (and would solve that problem as well).
I bet those who'd like to leave the US plan to profit from it and put themselves up as new leaders of sovereign Puerto Rico - and those who'd like to stay with the US would suffer under the new rule.
the fact is P.R. needs the U.S. other wise it become a haven from the Cartel which is all ready there by the way but controled due to the U.S. and its law enforcement such as FBI AND Customs so P.R. SHOULD CHILL OUT!!
Dam it why ar so many peopel afraid of going to independence for 4 years just for 4 fucking years. The one who dependes on the goverment that dont do shit for puerto rico an ar the ones afraid to go to independece. the oil well we have nature soo or later the oil will run out an then what?
you do not even know what i'm talking about the next time my dad has to jump 25 feet to the water to rescue some dumass that is drowning i tell you a joke
As long as PR can keep their beautiful culture! From Salsa y Reggaton to Platanos the culture is hermosa!! If the EEUU comes and makes it a state the culture could be lost or americanized! If the people living there want to stay a U.S. Territory then they should still be able to control what happens on their land!
Well, this is not about freedom this is about rights. We dont need to be a free country to be threat with equality. And have the privileges that countries has. We have to build a new mentality and be example for the world and americans. That sharing wealths and believes is more important of individual politics decitions.
