@calebgray while i agree with the spirit of ur post it's important to note that you have to install and configure Wine and take "extra steps" that non-linux users are either unaware of, afraid of, or both. the challenge that linux needs to present to itself is the "it just works" mantra that Apple has adopted. @BusoRN Heh, and these effects were possible in as early as late 2004... I just didn't have a fast enough computer to run all of it WHILE running screen video capture software at the same time until 2006. :D
lovely video mate, lovely. Music is spot on. Getting ready to make the jump to Gentoo from windows 7 tonight actually. Gotz my partitions setup, gonna run a test install, and then eventually migrate completely over :)
@djAmored Good luck! The Gentoo Handbook is very comprehensive and an easy read... I highly recommend going to it anytime you need to figure something out.

@kurohead Yes, back then-- it would use ~70mb after a clean boot. Now it uses about 100mb, I have a lot more background services running these days though.. If I turned off Apache, PHP, MySQL, and others.. I'm sure it would be about 70mb again.
Right clicking on the desktop of XFCE4 shows that menu.. I may have changed some of the options, but only slightly.
@awwkool Heh, yeah-- it's really not that bad considering after doing it maybe two or three times, you never ever have to do it again... I've literally been running the same base system for over two years (transferred over from my Pentium 4).

In fact I did the whole install from the 2nd linux. Easy.
I really like your setup and am thinking of trying to put a copy of gentoo on my tx2500. Just about everything on this computer is a problem, bcm4321, ati radeon3200, wacom support. Ive been told that my best way around all these hardware issues is to just do it myself with a gentoo install. Ive been told I should be capable, but some reading can never hurt :P Do you know of any good help guides? Perhaps any tips? I was planning on giving this a go over the weekend.
Google "gentoo handbook," it is the guide I follow everytime I make a new Gentoo install. While following the steps to install, I recommend reading ahead to the "Working with Gentoo" and "Working with Portage" sections.
Also, Gentoo Wiki is a superb place to find howto's and answers.

FarFromAverageJoe is right... not to mention the Gentoo team has recently published an article advising users NOT to waste their time tweaking the compiler options, and encouraging users to give the precompiled packages a try.
The advantage to this approach is an instant Gentoo system, that you can tweak, and then recompile in the background while you use it. I recently built a new system with this approach and was using the computer within 30mins of burning their latest ISO.
"...not to mention the Gentoo team has recently published an article advising users NOT to waste their time tweaking the compiler options, and encouraging users to give the precompiled packages a try."
Someone has murdered the Gentoo team and replaced them with evil clones.
From scratch, the entire system took 6 hours to compile... and it's been stable since, and spanned across two completely different computers. No backups. No hassles. It just works.
Cool video & music! Just out curiosity - what's the name of your wallpaper? I think I noticed you got it off of digitalblasphemy but there's a ton of graphics on that site - do you by any chance remember/know where on that site one could find it?
holy shite, the cube desktop is oarsome! And I'd love to be able to work while having a movie play as an overlay (it's like ADHD porn...) fucking Vista...
Please tell me the name of the music. In addition how did you get your graphics card set up, i've killed my ubuntu and fedora os, by playing with updates for propritary software for nvidia.
Heh, that's the downfall with using an OS that was intended to be used from sources as a binary distribution... it's too hard for the maintainers to keep compatibility along with staying up to date... I can't help you there, except that the easiest thing to do is download the latest version of the distro, and do updates right away... then never update again, and after a year reinstall the way you would with Windows.
I'm not going to lie: no, it's not faster. I have a feeling that after congesting the file system with gigabytes of compiling related files my hard drive itself got slower. Hahah!
More seriously: yes, there are times where I see a huge difference in speed... but this is not because of how it was compiled, it's because Gentoo also encourages you to edit every setting for every program.. that's where the real optimization comes into play.
Also, the kernel boots really fast compared to others.
Ahh, less skills more practice... nothing comes naturally to anyone until they've done it a few times. Honestly I installed Gentoo from scratch a few times before I even had any idea of what was actually going on... besides the obvious. You're can't be expected to know the terms and instructions invented by other people without learning them first. :P
yea compiz definitely provides not only increased ease of use, but more settings and effects. btw, which video program were you using to watch the film, really like the display panel for it.
This is Gentoo Linux with Xgl when it first came out... these days I recommend just installing Ubuntu and then Compiz... it'll accomplish the same result in literally 1/100th the time.
Hah, well-- no. It took my last build about 14 hours to install, but if you count how long it takes to set everything up the way you like it-- it probably takes about 40 hours of tweaking. My current system takes 6 hours to compile everything, and I just keep a backup of my config files now, so everything takes about 8 hours to reinstall Gentoo. Although... I don't see the need to ever install Gentoo again, been running the same version across three desktops, just had to tweak the kernel.
Yeah, if you watch the resources monitor at the bottom left, you'll see how hard the machine works to do certain things... although, 90% of that work was going into recording the screen with a buggy beta xvid screen capture program, and especially at the resolution I was running.
I'll look into tkdesk/uwm, but so far out of all the WM's I've tried XFCE just gets the job done. (btw: the latest version isn't "sluggish" like the version you see in this video.)
Ive just downloaded both gentoo and knoppix to test and see what one i like the most. my questoin to you is do they both have that 3d cube desktopthing or do i need to download it?
These days the "3d cube" comes with the Compiz package. For Gentoo, this used to be a custom install, though it's been years since I've taken the time to set it up so I'm not sure of the standard process now. But with Knoppix, I'm sure it's a simple download/install.
Yeah, it's XFCE-- I haven't used Fluxbox, though I have read about it and check out some derivatives of it... I've found that XFCE is the fastest to configure of the many window managers, while being the fastest and most stable.
In this video you're seeing my custom Blue Fire theme... dunno if that's what reminds you of Fluxbox or not. :P
Fast, stable, simple to configure, and powerful... and because I'm too shallow to move on! lol-- Truly XFCE out-of-the-box has been the most efficient window manager I've used to date, it cross platform compatible (runs on my PS3 really well) and I just really like how the developers have not tried to please me with visual effects, if I want Vista, I'll install Vista. You know? :P
lol-- check the date I uploaded this video. This was LONG before compiz; this was hand compiled, hand configured, and hand coordinated. That's why it's faster, and shows off all of the features at the time. And that's the difference between distros, while some give you binaries that you can't change, others give you full control over the end result.
nice vid dude, I have a question: I've been running Xp for about 3 years now and I've now installed ubuntu on a partition (with out any boot loader, i could choose freely on start up which system i wanted to use) and one day i decided to re-install Xp MCE I did it and Xp works perfect as usual but i can't find my ubuntu installation on start up! does any1 know what to do?
It sounds as though GRUB was replaced with the Windows boot loader. My recommendation is to boot the Ubuntu CD again and run: grub-install /dev/hd-- (replace -- with the disk and partition).
whys everyone hating on windows its not even that bad. I tri-boot windows Mac OSX and ubuntu on my media center pc and each os has there pros and cons. And to everyone that thinks that linux and mac osx dont have viruses they do, just not as much as windows because they are not as popular. Oh and before someone says using osx on a pc is illeagal, for me its not because I went out to the apple store to buy the disc and then i pached it myself
i wonder how is GNU/linux going to get virus, if its open source?, i think its rather unlikely, and stop saying "its because is not as popular windows"
Hmm, I'm not sure if you meant that the likelihood of getting a virus was higher or lower on Linux-- but I can attest to the fact that it's highly unlikely that you'll get one as long as you know what you're doing. The program "top" will show exactly which applications are running, there is no such thing as a hidden app, passing through some dll somewhere... so it's just overall more difficult to get away with a virus on Linux is all. Though, yes, there are plenty of them.
Make sure you're installing the boot loader (usually GRUB) on your primary hard drive (not on a partition): grub-install --no-floppy /dev/sda (that will usually do it, otherwise refer to the Gentoo Handbook to debug your problem).
What desktop environment are you using? I've been using linux since ubuntu 6.06, tried many distro's, and I think I'm finally ready for gentoo so I'm downloading it right now.
Heh, no problem. Though my specs on that machine were much higher than necessary. Keep in mind I was using video capture at a high resolution and yet it still ran that smooth. Imagine it without the overhead of the capturing program! :P
I do, if you know all the warez you need and how to use bash its a far far far far far superior os, compared to Windows. I suggest you check out Fedora 8 and become a member of fedoraforums[dot]org :) They can help with anything.
I can't speak on Linux Vs. OSX becuase i have never used it.
The only thing i can't do is game. Besides that i can do everthing i did under windows ( faster ) and more!!
Heh, truly if you are not a programmer there is honestly no reason for it. Hands down. Similar to if you're not a video editor, no need for OS X. It's just the way it works.
I agree. Once a year I install a distro to see what's going on, use it for a week and then get annoyed with it. Yes I am a programmer, but I don't expect to have to be a programmer to achieve things with my OS. It should be protecting the end user from the complexities of the machine, and linux still fails to do this.
OSX is nice but I refuse to spend money on it until it works on my oem PC. I refuse to buy overpriced hardware from little Steves' in the Apple shop.
LOL! You're on the right track here. Linux is only good if it is making you more productive, for me it is 10-fold. As for OS X, it's okay... but like Gnome it's "so easy" it's unproductive for users like me.
Still, you can't disagree with me when I say that even the simplest distro of Linux is much, much more efficient and productive than any version of Windows!
You're right, eyecandy. Useless? Hardly. I'd like to see you try and manage four screens on one monitor in Windows, or have your inactive windows fade to grayscale overtime so you know they're wasting memory, or (without the need of a separate program) zoom in on anything you see instead of having to open a picture in Photoshop to zoom, or (similar to OS X) hit the hot key and have your windows organize themselves so that you can easily manage over four windows on a single screen. Need I go on?
would this program lag if i only have a amd 64 dual core 1.0 Ghz
1GB ram
and an nvidia 3800
i have 2 external hdd does that help? one is a 320 gb and the other is 500 gb...can i pull some ram off of em ?.. is it possible to run and install onto an external?
If you used Gentoo, and you spent a long time understanding your hardware, and optimizing everything, then yes, this is been proven to run well on a AMD K6-2-400Mhz with a Geforce 2 MX. All it takes is a LOT of studying/testing/tweaking.
Eye candy. Its completely useless. I'm not really impressed. 1 star. it might have been deserving of 2 or 3 if you had some cool background music or something...

Thanks for information! I tried to install Ubuntu. But something went wrong: I have a live cd and when i tried to install Ubuntu to hard drive my computer became slower. I'm using IBM T30 model. Can you help me again please :P
Hmm, the HDD is slower in Windows or in Linux? If it is so in Linux it's probably because you haven't used hdparm to tweak HDD performance. If it's your overall HDD speed, it's likely because you need to defragment, or replace the drive if it's older.
If you are not used to linux, ubuntu is probably the best distro for you. It's very easy and simple to install and manage. After spending some time with it, you may change for other distros, like gentoo! :)

Gentoo is the best distribution out there !
You decide every thing ! - what kernel to install what packages you have on your system.
ALL the installation are specifically complied for YOUR specific chipset!
After the installation you will have the best/most compatible OS for your SPECIFIC system!
Gentoo is all about performance.
The performance is unbelievable ...there is no other OS like it!
aweinsto 1 year ago
@aweinsto Performance is what you make it... any Linux distro will run the same speed if you tweak it. Gentoo just gives you the power in the beginning so all of the tweaks are made obvious right away, instead of later.
calebgray 1 year ago
@calebgray
You are right...you need to tweak it to make other Linux distribution to be like Gentoo.
-remove the current kernel (from the specific distribution) and reinstall+compile the one you want.
-remove all the packages and other junk that by default installed on your system.
-reconfiguring the system..and more.
in Gentoo you are the designer ! - you are building your system from the start...(down up)
it's not obvious and hard to do, but by far the best/fast system.

@jayvicious It's 119mb to download, and the average user will only sit at the PC for an intermittent 2-4 hours between compiles.
FarFromAverageJoe 2 years ago
FarFromAverageJoe is right... not to mention the Gentoo team has recently published an article advising users NOT to waste their time tweaking the compiler options, and encouraging users to give the precompiled packages a try.
The advantage to this approach is an instant Gentoo system, that you can tweak, and then recompile in the background while you use it. I recently built a new system with this approach and was using the computer within 30mins of burning their latest ISO.

Someone has murdered the Gentoo team and replaced them with evil clones.

how long did it take to compile everything to the point where you had working Xgl. 2 months?
ThisIsCleverUsername 2 years ago
From scratch, the entire system took 6 hours to compile... and it's been stable since, and spanned across two completely different computers. No backups. No hassles. It just works.

Thanks!

They are all forks/renames of the original concept. Xgl is the name of the base technology, compiz/beryl are effects on top of Xgl.

Vengetic 2 years ago
Heh, that's the downfall with using an OS that was intended to be used from sources as a binary distribution... it's too hard for the maintainers to keep compatibility along with staying up to date... I can't help you there, except that the easiest thing to do is download the latest version of the distro, and do updates right away... then never update again, and after a year reinstall the way you would with Windows.

Is it notably faster compared to other Linux systems, now that you compiled everything from source?
HansJuergenSegefeld 2 years ago
I'm not going to lie: no, it's not faster. I have a feeling that after congesting the file system with gigabytes of compiling related files my hard drive itself got slower. Hahah!
More seriously: yes, there are times where I see a huge difference in speed... but this is not because of how it was compiled, it's because Gentoo also encourages you to edit every setting for every program.. that's where the real optimization comes into play.
Also, the kernel boots really fast compared to others.
calebgray 2 years ago
Thanks, man. Guess I'll stay with pre-compiled distros, then :)

The music reminds me of Deus Ex. =)
I really like Gentoo, but I just don't have the skills to optimize it for my machine. Back to Vista, eh?
BatzorigVox 2 years ago
Ahh, less skills more practice... nothing comes naturally to anyone until they've done it a few times. Honestly I installed Gentoo from scratch a few times before I even had any idea of what was actually going on... besides the obvious. You're can't be expected to know the terms and instructions invented by other people without learning them first. :P

You need to try out rxvt-unicode! Some transparent terminals would look sick with your setup:

how and where can i get this exact same operating system. all i can really find is gentoo, nothing about xgl 1.0.
zachy12341 2 years ago
This is Gentoo Linux with Xgl when it first came out... these days I recommend just installing Ubuntu and then Compiz... it'll accomplish the same result in literally 1/100th the time.
calebgray 2 years ago
Does Gentoo REALLY take a week to install as I'm told?
Epsand 2 years ago
Hah, well-- no. It took my last build about 14 hours to install, but if you count how long it takes to set everything up the way you like it-- it probably takes about 40 hours of tweaking. My current system takes 6 hours to compile everything, and I just keep a backup of my config files now, so everything takes about 8 hours to reinstall Gentoo. Although... I don't see the need to ever install Gentoo again, been running the same version across three desktops, just had to tweak the kernel.

the amount of who cares I will offer this video befuddles me.

not pathetic. quickly put together. could be tkdesk/uwm. which would be really nice.
incredible efficiency and Awesome "windowing(little boxy things)/system(rofl)" effects. whereas-this setup is very resource hoggish. in comparison.
v01dad3pt 3 years ago
Yeah, if you watch the resources monitor at the bottom left, you'll see how hard the machine works to do certain things... although, 90% of that work was going into recording the screen with a buggy beta xvid screen capture program, and especially at the resolution I was running.
I'll look into tkdesk/uwm, but so far out of all the WM's I've tried XFCE just gets the job done. (btw: the latest version isn't "sluggish" like the version you see in this video.)

Ive just downloaded both gentoo and knoppix to test and see what one i like the most. my questoin to you is do they both have that 3d cube desktopthing or do i need to download it?
acpsuperfly 3 years ago
These days the "3d cube" comes with the Compiz package. For Gentoo, this used to be a custom install, though it's been years since I've taken the time to set it up so I'm not sure of the standard process now. But with Knoppix, I'm sure it's a simple download/install.

is that xfce? How come it looks like Fluxbox
Amebixfan 3 years ago
Yeah, it's XFCE-- I haven't used Fluxbox, though I have read about it and check out some derivatives of it... I've found that XFCE is the fastest to configure of the many window managers, while being the fastest and most stable.
In this video you're seeing my custom Blue Fire theme... dunno if that's what reminds you of Fluxbox or not. :P
calebgray 3 years ago
I like everything about your video, but .. why xfce?
YetWhyNot 3 years ago
Fast, stable, simple to configure, and powerful... and because I'm too shallow to move on! lol-- Truly XFCE out-of-the-box has been the most efficient window manager I've used to date, it cross platform compatible (runs on my PS3 really well) and I just really like how the developers have not tried to please me with visual effects, if I want Vista, I'll install Vista. You know? :P
calebgray 3 years ago
seriously are any distros different if you put copmpiz on?
russellbrouillard 3 years ago
lol-- check the date I uploaded this video. This was LONG before compiz; this was hand compiled, hand configured, and hand coordinated. That's why it's faster, and shows off all of the features at the time. And that's the difference between distros, while some give you binaries that you can't change, others give you full control over the end result.

nice vid dude, I have a question: I've been running Xp for about 3 years now and I've now installed ubuntu on a partition (with out any boot loader, i could choose freely on start up which system i wanted to use) and one day i decided to re-install Xp MCE I did it and Xp works perfect as usual but i can't find my ubuntu installation on start up! does any1 know what to do?
farsk1 3 years ago
It sounds as though GRUB was replaced with the Windows boot loader. My recommendation is to boot the Ubuntu CD again and run: grub-install /dev/hd-- (replace -- with the disk and partition).
calebgray 3 years ago
whys everyone hating on windows its not even that bad. I tri-boot windows Mac OSX and ubuntu on my media center pc and each os has there pros and cons. And to everyone that thinks that linux and mac osx dont have viruses they do, just not as much as windows because they are not as popular. Oh and before someone says using osx on a pc is illeagal, for me its not because I went out to the apple store to buy the disc and then i pached it myself

i wonder how is GNU/linux going to get virus, if its open source?, i think its rather unlikely, and stop saying "its because is not as popular windows"
redsky02 3 years ago
Hmm, I'm not sure if you meant that the likelihood of getting a virus was higher or lower on Linux-- but I can attest to the fact that it's highly unlikely that you'll get one as long as you know what you're doing. The program "top" will show exactly which applications are running, there is no such thing as a hidden app, passing through some dll somewhere... so it's just overall more difficult to get away with a virus on Linux is all. Though, yes, there are plenty of them.
calebgray 3 years ago
I dont know how to get it to boot I have vista and It never boots
knroo7 3 years ago
Make sure you're installing the boot loader (usually GRUB) on your primary hard drive (not on a partition): grub-install --no-floppy /dev/sda (that will usually do it, otherwise refer to the Gentoo Handbook to debug your problem).

It's just the way it works.
calebgray 3 years ago
I refuse to buy overpriced hardware from little Steves' in the Apple shop.
mynamesforest 3 years ago
LOL! You're on the right track here. Linux is only good if it is making you more productive, for me it is 10-fold. As for OS X, it's okay... but like Gnome it's "so easy" it's unproductive for users like me.
calebgray 3 years ago
Still, you can't disagree with me when I say that even the simplest distro of Linux is much, much more efficient and productive than any version of Windows!

ficken2000turbo 3 years ago
You're right, eyecandy. Useless? Hardly. I'd like to see you try and manage four screens on one monitor in Windows, or have your inactive windows fade to grayscale overtime so you know they're wasting memory, or (without the need of a separate program) zoom in on anything you see instead of having to open a picture in Photoshop to zoom, or (similar to OS X) hit the hot key and have your windows organize themselves so that you can easily manage over four windows on a single screen. Need I go on?

blazinemc 3 years ago
If you used Gentoo, and you spent a long time understanding your hardware, and optimizing everything, then yes, this is been proven to run well on a AMD K6-2-400Mhz with a Geforce 2 MX. All it takes is a LOT of studying/testing/tweaking.

Ps.Sorry my poor English! I live in Finland!
huudiduu 4 years ago
Hmm, the HDD is slower in Windows or in Linux? If it is so in Linux it's probably because you haven't used hdparm to tweak HDD performance. If it's your overall HDD speed, it's likely because you need to defragment, or replace the drive if it's older.
calebgray 3 years ago
Which one is better? Gentoo or Ubuntu? Can you help me please?
huudiduu 4 years ago
If you are not used to linux, ubuntu is probably the best distro for you. It's very easy and simple to install and manage. After spending some time with it, you may change for other distros, like gentoo! :)
