  • this was played on the funeral of my friend. she committed suicide and i wish i couldve helped her. this song always reminds me of her and makes me cry so much. miss u charlotte, hope u r in a better place now honey

  • Great, now someone tell him to approve of Nightwish's cover!

  • haha, you shouldn't say that he played it too fast, it's you who play it too slow

  • I think this amount of speed fits the song perfectly. I prefer to play it like this myself.. it's like a rush.

  • awesome !

  • Masterpiece.

  • So Beautiful >////<

  • Well, you see, he's played it so many times now he gets bored, so he plays it faster to finish it quicker. Except at the end, when he remembers he's getting paid by the hour, and slows it right down...

  • @silvera1109 lol

  • @silvera1109 It speeds up half way through and slows down at the end because that's how he wrote it. I have the score of it. Good musicians don't care how much they get paid. You idiot

  • @SpiritHourglass he's joking you dumbass.

  • ? is the human being who tells a man how to play his own composition

  • All of you critisising this man dont seem to get that he actually wrote this song. I would say that this man has excellent controll over his hands. Imagine how many times he must have played this, if I where him I would long for some variety.

  • and to this whole hes playing too fast i jst wanted to give some facts...

look at him while playing and u'll notice he baerly ever looks at his hands that can show u how many times he must have played this song andi know that many people tend to speed up automatically as they get better at a song but the important bit is whether he slows down by the right amout in the bridges etc...

which in my opinion he does .. )

  • 6 people had a hearing disability and thought what is this ond man doing in the dark? :D

    -----> 0:00 <----- REPLAY BUTTON

  • whomever said it was too fast apparently hasn't heard the regular shifts in tempo of the original track. This is not more than a few bpm at most faster than the original and that might even be stretching it.

  • I am so glad to have found my people!!!! This song is like the soundtrack to my heart, for real. One thing I like about the piece is the massive intensity. And I tend to play it fast, too. God, when I was learning it at first...hahaahha!!! ahem. Let me just say I'm glad no one was listening to THAT. And I would do pretty much anything to have seen Michael Nyman play...

  • this music is AMAZING! like a balm to the soul!

  • 6 people don't understand this...

  • This song fits so many different moods. I like to play this song fast... poor keys on my piano has felt my frustrations many times to this song. He can play how he wants

  • i think 6 people are crazy....

  • @makady not stupid....suoless...empty....:)

  • music is wonderful b/c it allows you to interpret however you like, we're not robot and we play with emotions

  • O_O OMG

  • lol too fast? u should know by now. Controllin the piano is harder than it seems. and Pianist, never ever play at the same speed

  • Just because he composed it doesn't mean he can play it correctly at the exact right speed. Tbh Composing something is entirely diffrent to performing. But anyway Great song :D LOVE IT! And the speed seems fine. Slow is a bit more droney and last forever. The way he plays it you actually move from one part to the other without dieing of boredom. The speed intesifies the emotion conveyed by the song. This is because it pronounce the melody more!

  • may be he was just not in the mood and was pissed off so he just wanted to get it over and done with so "meh!"

  • omg im learning to play this and, um, now i feel a little... unsure that i can do it :)

  • I LOVE THE PIANO AND THE SONG <3

  • anyone can interpretate and play it as he feel, as long he dont take profits for this without having rights to do it

  • The heart asks for pleasure first is much faster than The Promise - it´s good speed, i think.

  • やっぱ、曲作った本人はうめーな(笑)

  • Brilliant piece of music, and as a composer I saulte him - but I must admit I have seen this played just as well (or even better, to me anyway) but other people on YouTube. But then, like everyone says - this is HIS piece.

  • Fu***ing awesome! Master!

  • I love the emotion behind this song, and how well it flows together. Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and magnificent piano songs I've heard.

  • All I have to say is....damn. He's got some serious talent.

  • Too many notes. Just cut a few and it'll be perfect.

  • @pmfnr Which few did you have in mind? :) (also an Amadeus geek)

  • daleee cañaaa jajajaja me encanta esta canción, lástima de no tener piano.......si no se iba a enterar la vecina jajajaja

  • TOP of the TOP of the TOP of OST... Such a piece!!!!! Magnificent...

  • i know it is his song, but i actually dont like the way he's playing it.. its almost robotic and without feeling.

  • if you wanna learn really diffcult pieces, start looking at chopin's nocturnes, for example...many of them ( almost all ) are very hard, but i like them very much, such a great composer!

  • He is a composer of this song....he isn't playing fast...maybe you are playing slow :)

  • @1993Jitka I don't know about piano, but I could feel he can play piano with freedom. His fingers are dancing!

  • This song is not that hard to play.. its much easier than fur elise or many noctures, what makes it sound powerful is the way the chords progress. Its really the same thing over and over and over again.. you just to play it with real feeling

  • venga tonto k estas k la para elisa no es mas facil k esta peazo de cancion k no tienes ni puta idea

  • WOW

  • ...Indizi su di me .. e di cosa mi urla dentro....

  • by the way, I'm just a likea kid... sorta , ok not really but I only just finished learning river flows in you by yiruma and fur elise and the heart asks pleasure first looks like a big jump. Just coz i culd do river flows on my own duznt mean i culd do this!!! This is gonna kill me :(

  • @LlamasInBananas

Fur Elise is harder than Heart Asks Pleasure First so dont worry

  • @dtoma555 what?! NEVER!!!!

  • NOOOOOOOOOO!!! my piano teacher just gave me a sheet of music and told me to learn it on my own over the holidays! THis sux, im never gonna be able to play it, HOW FAST IS IT SUPPOST TO BE! mission impossible...

  • @ LlamasInBananas

how's it going with learning this song? i just started learning it today. it's not as hard it sounds when you start off slow :)

  • Well that boosts my confidence ;D it looked quite scary haha because it sounds that complex, spose its just its awsomeness :L but yer ive learnt a few harder songs then what LlamaslnBananas has but sstill, my friend plays it and it looks like w=errrr o.0

  • @LlamasInBananas I agree with crazy 4 japan, you really have to start slow.

After a while you get used to the rhyme and can play it faster (and faster and faster ^^)

  • gosh dang, i hoe one day i'll be able to be this amazing.. :D

  • i actually love it at this tempo, but maybe that's because it's the speed at which i'm used to playing it.

  • The fact of the matter is, is that its HIS composition so he can play it at whatever speed he wants.

  • @olisarchive LOL, well, he can and he did, but other people (myself included) are still allowed to remark that he played too fast :) cheers

  • im sure when people say hes playing too fast they are comparing it to the official recording of this piece that is heard on his cd. But yes, in the heat of the moment and emotion of playing any piece, its not uncommon for a musician to add varying dynamics, slurs, tempo variations etc...many musicians tweak their pieces a little bit while performing

  • How can anybody say that a composer is playing his own piece "too fast" ???

M.N composed this piano piece from scratch so surely he is the person to judge how fast his piece should be!

I assume the people who left these types of comments are non-musicians.

  • I appreciate that Michael Nyman is the composer but you are a moron. Of course one can argue that he is playing it too fast. You could not argue that he is playing it "wrong", because, yes, he composed it, however obviously you could have the opinion that the piece sounds better at a slower tempo for various reasons. I personally feel that he is playing the piece too fast myself but that is just an opinion. Don't argue with that.

  • normal speed first run, then he plays it again faster. what's weird with that

  • In the actual sheet music at the end the piece is played again but much quicker and slightly different. Unless you played the piece you probably wouldn't realise its slightly different though.

  • Im not talking about the sheets lol, I do have them and can play the whole piece etc. But I was just answering that guy that it's his song and he can play it exactly as he wants on his concerts ^^

  • i think he's playing it a bit too fast but then again it is live and stuff is usually played faster. it's a beautiful piece of music and the lloyds tsb ad it was on years ago was perfect - wild horses running. that's exactly what it reminds me of and flowing rivers and the seasons. listen to me blabbering on lol

  • how can you say he's playing it too fast~~it's HIS composition....he can play it at whatever speed he likes ㅠ_ㅠ

  • therachmaninoffFan, are you saying edward munch could repaint the scream blue and everyone would still say its the original? it doesnt matter who composed the song, even if it is himself, if its intented for a special speed (130 bpm), then the original song is allways that speed

  • @TheRachmaninoffFan Even if it weren't his composition, he could still play at whatever speed he likes...

  • @Cleroth FUNNY YEA YOURE RIGHT

  • @TheRachmaninoffFan Exactly right.

    Dean

  • @TheRachmaninoffFan Damn right! He is the man...

  • @TheRachmaninoffFan fucking tight he fucking wrote the thing

  • Wonderful

  • how can you say someone did a better version than this, when the man who wrote it is performing it...

  • watch me playing this music on the piano :) and tell me what you think.D

  • Nightwish did a way better version of this song!is SUCH a shame it cant be released. ¬¬'

  • This is my favourite song ever but somehow I don't feel this particular version of it was as inspired as it should be. No denying Michael Nyman is a genius, however.

  • much too fast!!

  • if you watch the movie the rushed chords co incide with wots happening in the scene .

  • The original writer doesn't necessarily reads his own work best.

Take audiobooks for example, some narrators read much better, can draw you inside the book much better than the actual writer's own reading can.

Composing and playing are not the same :)

Ligeti could have never played his own Etudes the way they were intended to be played, that's why he worked closely with pianist Pierre Laurent Aimard in order to get them recorded the way he wanted to hear them.

  • beautiful comment.

  • How can it be better than the composer playing his own composition? You're hearing it here the way it was originally written! DUH!

  • @polishkid -.- yes i think many people people could do this much better! (including me) hes playing it without any emotions hes just reading the notes every child could do that

  • Firstly, how is he "just reading the notes" when there is no sheet music in front of him?

Secondly, and most important of all, this is the guy who -wrote- and composed this beautiful piece of music.

If you're talking about actual piano playing, I won't argue. However Nyman deserves respect for producing this acclaimed work, so that it could be played by others, including you who believesyou can do it better.

About emotions - well, that's just your interpretation of his piece.

  • The sheet music is in front of him. Nyman plays with music sheets laid out flat. I saw him last night, it's how he played then and how he plays in this video. This is the second part of the movement where the tempo picks up.

  • Ah well, didn't see. But that's beside the point.

But in light of my comment (not adressed to you tho ;P), reading his notes isn't a bad thing and doesn't make him any worse a pianist. If it does, then that's like penalising JK Rowling for not memorising her book at group reading sessions.

  • It's true, when I play this piece, I do take it a bit slower, but I put much more emphasis on certain aspects. I really do try to portray strong emotion.

I believe that's how it was meant to be, a piece to challenge you to bring the notes off the page.

  • Yputube:Stefano Ottomano

  • Now come to think of it...I like it this fast.

  • but it's the original composer playing for crying out loud! he can basically do whaterver he wants to with it!

  • I find this version uninspiring.

  • Way too fast version, like the "original" much better. Not saying I can do it better, but its to rushy. Why the sheet?

  • Why does he look at the notes? I mean he should the know how to play it blindfolded by now.

  • he is awesome

  • hardly ever true..that a composer plays his work the best.

  • so you think you can do a better job ?

  • no, it's a trend among composers to rush their own works. Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, and Liszt were known to rush too. I do wonder why. I think it has something to do with their attitude that the notes speak for themselves.

  • it doesnt sound like it was rushed

    its fast but not rushed

its just the way its ment to be played

    i think it sounds awesome

wouldnt have it played any other way

  • he composed the music himself

none of the other person showing off on youtube manage to play as good as him ^^

  • would be emberassing if it would be other way round ^^

  • it is his song, i would assume he would know how to play it the best. i'm a little surprised he has the sheet in front of him actually.

very well done performance none the less though.

  • oO thats what i was trying to say.

indeed, i was a little wondered as well.

  • Why should you be surprised that he has the music in front of him?

  • Pianists usually play without sheets in concerts. (Unfortunately so because that means my teacher makes me learn things by heart and I suck at it. :'D)

Love this song though I have to admit I've heard better versions... But this is not bad either.

  • lol lucky you i can remember but i can't play my pieces properly

  • a great performancee, but slower sounds better

  • wow he plays fast :p

    not a single mistake !! :p

  • it's dynamic yet fragile, dramatic yet silent, melancholic yet positive.. simply impressed. I am so happy i have seen him playing this live.. and "big my secret" is absolutely amazing too!

  • HAHA WO, the man him self!

    The beast of the nile!

  • 名曲だぁね☆

  • havenly song, excellent work Michael, just excellent ...

  • I agree!

  • I fell in love with Nyman's compositions the first time I heard them. There's something about his music that moves me. Whether it's in a positive or negative way-gotta like that.

  • Can't you feel that the mood changes with the speed. When she plays slowly in the movie there is a different mood in the music, when she plays it fast it's almost like she has so much feeling and passion inside her that she has to get it out somehow.

  • the song is nothing 16th notes....of course its fast...

  • I think he plays brilliant.^^

You can feel he's having fun and thats important. It's his music, so he can do nothing wrong with it. It sounds great!

  • one of this generations best composers.

    <3

  • totally!!!!!!

  • It's his piece he can play it at whatever speed he wants lol

  • no he isnt

  • i think the music accelerates when it starts repeating it self

  • un tocco di classe che rasenta la perfezione musicale...il più bel pezzo che sia mai stato suonato con un pianoforte...meraviglioso, non ci sono parole...

  • i saw him live yesterday, "big my secret" and "heart asks for pleasure first" were absolutley amazing. this is my favorite piano track.

  • Where did you saw him ?

  • in braunschweig, germany. he is quite funny, after he is finished with one song, he grabs the musicpaper and throws it over his shoulder. as the concert was over, the whole floor behind him was covered with paper :D and for his first piece he had prepared a big screen where a video was shown while a recorded pianotrack was played. that track just had an error and he completely fucked it up xD he didnt stop it, just played random notes that just sounded horrible. but everything else was great!

  • my "best" freind.. can play this song.. very wonderful ♥

  • i luv the film (maybe not the sexy bit but...) i'm learning tht song on the piano and just listenin 2 him play it makes u set ur goals!!!! wow

  • I love this song i can play it =]

He is absolutely amazing, i dont know how he composes like that, we have to compose a song for gcse and i cant do it to save my life.

  • Tegnap este Budapesten... Csodálatos volt.

Last night in Budapest... It was wonderful.

  • This man i AWESOME...

  • It's not one of the most complicated instrumental song I ever heard, but it's one of the most emotive for sure!!!

    Beautiful!

  • honestly, my opinion tho, but i dont like his use of dynamics, if he even has much there. love this piece (not "song", like some people like to call it). i wish there was more emotion in dynamics as there was in duration and speed.

  • its supposed to have like a "singing" feel to it, I'm playing it now, like crescendoing in the middle of the phrases, decrescendo towards the ends. Its a very painful song when you're not used to stretching at least a note above the octave, like myself. :D

  • hmmm i guess that makes sense seeing as (this is wat im told) she's a mute and uses the piano as her voice, to express her emotion and stuff.... haha im a guitarist and i know that feeling!! painful pleasure...but a kick arse party trick when you pull off the crazy stretches in front of your mates with a smile on your face...

  • He is tha man!!! Can't deny him man...

  • Okay, perhaps I was exaggerating. It's just that the ending seemed to fade away without any resolution; it just seemed that there was more to come.

  • The ending is perfect.

  • i didnt hear anything falling to bits. not at all.

  • Nice! Shame the ending fell to bits though.

  • Question: Mr. Myman composed the music, and played it on the soundtrack...How does it "fall to bits"??

He's nothing short of amazing to hear. Brilliancy at its best!♥

  • I love this man

  • I wish I could play this one day....

  • Thats what I call playing!!!

Awesome strong emotionally well structured, powerfully warm and aggressive in the same time!!!

  • the man is a goddamn genius

  • he is a genius..

  • my god... it is perfect

  • I know how to play this. : D Just need to work more on the dynamics, I guess.

  • well you could if you own a piano or keyboard, use the lessons on youtube for this song and if you are eager enough to practise it everyday. that´s what i did and i can play it well now. never played piano before but this song didnt leave me alone.

  • same! I had never had a lesson before but now i can play this!

  • which lessons here on youtube are the right ones? because some of them play different things so it's kinda hard to know who plays the right one.

  • Brilliant, wish I could play this.

  • this is the best speed.. why not change your selfwritten piece of music if it sounds better in a continuing development? nymans known for changing his songs every now and then. best film score i know alongside with yann tiersens´ "amelie".

  • Oh... Wonderfull...

  • ... If the composer plays at this tempo, then MAYBE, this is the right tempo? Dont u think...? :D

  • There is no 'correct' tempo for a piece like this; this sort of music is called 'romantic', which means that it can be played quickly or slowly and that you can change the tempo halfway through the it.

  • AWESOME!!!!!!

    Wonderful.

  • along with Philip Glass' The Hours, best film score of all time!!

  • This is the perfect speed to play this song how dare you attack a brilliant genius!

  • Pure fucking genius!!!

  • WHOA!!! that is too much

  • I don't think it's as fast as it might seem. I think the audio quality might be affecting how we hear it. At least, that's the way I preceive it.

  • its not too fast... but if so: its his own composition so he can play it like he wants to

  • everyone can play it like he wants to

  • AMAZING!!!!!!

  • pure genius

  • Whoah. O_o;

  • the first weeks after hearing this song i was kinda speechless but now i know that this piece of music is the most beautiful and intense thing i have ever heard and probably will without overstatement.
