Okay this is guitar instruction done right. Don't start with chords and sheet music. Start right at the basics, fretting and picking, finger exercises. When you're getting good at fretting and picking, here's a tune you can play to break up the monotony of the exercises. When you've got this totally down square and nailed, move on to the next step. I hadn't picked up a guitar in over a decade and just following this guy is getting me right back into the swing of it.

If you're just starting out, get a used guitar and bring along a friend who knows a few things about guitars especially if you shop at a pawn shop. I'm a fan of the beginner electric packs they sell at Hastings, though I personally bought a used Telecaster & amp at a local music shop that had a good reputation for price and quality.

@TheMightyMicho go for it! :) I find it really really easy but it differs from person to person. SOme people find it hard and some find it easy so you'll never know till you try! :P Yeah, paying for guitar lessons is the best way to learn guitar because the teacher can teach you at your own pace and yeah, its just a whole lot better to pay for individual guitar lessons. :D It takes a few weeks to get the hang of it... It takes a while for your fingers to get used to pressing the guitar strings.

How do you get your pinky to reach the low E? Is it possible to have too short of fingers to play guitar? That would suck. And how do your fingers lay so straight above the strings? I like the techniques you show and they will definitely be used by me and help me but the rendition of smoke on the water is a lazy version there are other songs you could use. I was shot down in flames for showing a pro that many moons ago before I ever saw this video. He quickly corrected me and advised me never to show anyone that also the camera focus could be better I'm watching on a 42" screen and cannot see what frets and strings your holding down when you're playing come as you are.

You should re-shoot this in a quiet area and have a friend hold the camera, have close-ups when necessary, some simple editing, etc. I appreciate what you're trying to do, but for a video with almost 700,000 views, it deserves a little more work.

Obviously that would have been ideal. Unfortunately this was shot by me when I was in 8th grade. I had no idea that the video would get so popular. If I was professionally producing videos, it would have been much better quality video. However, I did what most 8th graders would do and propped up my dad's camera on a couch and shot the video.

Damn... I tried learning guitar months ago and gave it up. I got bored and frustrated really and now I know it was because I jumped straight onto trying the more advanced stuff. First impression of this video was, this looks so easy, it's not even learning anything. But I didn't realize how hard it actually is without making mistakes.

so far this is helpful. i have never touched a guitar before, of course not including guitar hero plastic ones :p. My fingers feel like they can't stretch to even the simplest notes... i hope that this will change if i practice more. my hands arent super small and theres girls that play just fine with tiny hands.
