Browns biggest legacy is the damage he has done to pension funds by the abolition of tax credits on dividends.  Millions of people cannot afford to retire thanks to him. David, what are you going to do to repair this damage? I have heard no talk of reinstating tax credits or at least allowing pension funds and ISAs to reclaim them.

MPs need a 'cushy lifestyle' if we want them to be any good... People with actual talent will seek employment elsewhere if they're given a meagre 5 figure salary and a demonised image. Sure it's good to have a message, but not at the expense of quality legislation. We need increase scrutiny on expenses, combined with higher pay for MPs, and ministerial salaries for committee chairs. Oh, and of course ruthless spending cuts in the public sector.

That's the thing with any system of morality, which is something the law certainly is: it's only true if you believe it's true. The difference is, though, that the law is forcibly enforced. Also, you have the problem with defining the term "hurt" which is part of the very purpose of the law. While it achieves it with mixed success, it is far better than allowing it to be interpreted differently by every person.

Unnecessary legislation is certainly a problem, both from the perspective of the integrity of the legal system and from a financial perspective, saving money is only part of the message that David Cameron is trying to get across in "Cutting the Cost of Politics". What he is trying to do, simply, is to restore faith in the political system with a message that shows that politicians are going to be bearing the burden of the recession just as the rest of us are.
