The movie never specifies. In the first episode of the TV series, it is explained that her father's job requires him to travel across the Other Realm. Also, there was an odd rule, that because her mother was mortal, they couldn't see each other for one year after she gained her magic. So, she moved in with her aunts so that they could train her to use her magic.
