I have this record! One of my favorites. I think I found it at Ave A records in the mid 90s, but I remember when it was hot in the 80s. Used to hear it on WNYU or NYE or one of those college stations.
Probably the first known House Head track to incorporate a traditional "Yoruba" song...a song I grew up on the streets of "Shomolu" listening to in the language I am still fluent in.
@kymon11 Great comment. This has been a favorite track for over 20 years and I've always wondered what the language and influence is. That's the great thing about this channel, people sharing info and memories.
Thanks man for uploading all this great old skool house jams. Makes me ever so grateful that I there back in the day. The last vestiges of serious club life... Paradise Garage, Zanzibar, The Loft and all those loft parties in between.
this is a tune dammm what good times ...this is safe n sound in my box with all the others classics .....the uk was thumping summer of 87/88/89/90 ....PRICELESS TIMELESS
@MrMichaelgb7 I think that I misunderstood Obosi123's comment. I originally thought that he meant it's the kind of crap music that a dj uses to merely fill a set. Now that I re-read the comment, I think that he means the song causes people to pack the floor. Oops. Sorry.
Why take drugs when you can get high of the music for real - not because of some external chemical interaction but an internal soulful reaction... as for ear plugs a lot of clubs play WAY TOO LOUD, but some don't, Protect your Hearing...
@ 6robski8: Yeah, I wear hearing protection. Check out my channel bio; I've done a lot of studio work and remixing behind the scenes. Musicians have been going plugged for decades, do you think we all want to wind up like Pete Townshend? You can still hear everything. I can name DJs who have lost so much hearing they no longer do studio work. As for drugs, they led me down a nearly fatal dead end in the late "80s. In 1989, with a clear head I became Muslim, and of course don't get high anymore.
@alkh3myst people with clear heads dont become Muslims. Id say believing that an Angel come to earth and spoke to some guy in a cave is beyond rational belief. Still its a free world, just dont spout that shiz my way.
I always wondered what the name of this record was! I was always flipped upside down or spinning around on the floor when it was playing - XD Shelter, HOLLA!
Ooooooo!! trae1974, "Daddy Groove" was my jam!! youtube is amazing cause i never thought anyone loved house like i. NYC Tony Humphries 4ever 98.7kissfm
Yeah Junior used to do work to this one. But I never could understand, what was up with that much carpeted floorspace? Didn't they know Junior was gonna be forcing people to dance all night:? One thing though. You must never have heard the system at the Garage. SF was a real close second though. Phazon were all Richard Long's apprentices. When SF closed Timmy Regisford bought that system, and took it to the Shelter.
That carpet, along the sides ,around the pit and up the bleachers and even up the ramp to the water fountain , i think was the secret of that club space. I remember that system pounding @ 8 am , junior playing bodydrill , my body was vibrating but i could still talk and listen in a conversation. i think that carpet was special, must have absorbed echo and highs making it perfect. also that tary wood floor.
The equalization was superb, peaking in the low midrange, where it's supposed to be. Most DJ's don't have good ears for EQ, and jam WAY too much treble. Those are the frequencies that at club/concert volume cause about 90% of hearing loss (over 15 KHz), unless they are EQ'ed flat or even cut a little. Ever since a very famous NYC DJ almost made my ears bleed in '94, I never go out without earplugs. Those super systems, and the techs who got the most out of them are long gone.
you know the deal ! its almost not even fair for DJ's or clubbers today. its just not authentic anymore! It all sounds the same and the art of making a track on vinyl and mixing it with another are over. we have been blessed to have lived those days in the 90's.
When I was a teenager on Long Island, I used hear this song mixed late at night on Kiss FM. That was in 89 and there used to be a song that was mixed together with it that used to say "It was black before creation". They went well together and were a part of that re-burgeoning pride in things African. Memories... Thanks for posting this. What about those house songs "Daddy Groove" and "Dear John"? Would love to hear those.
I know Blackout. I think I have it somewhere. It goes, "The lights come on, the lights go out", "Blackout! At the flick of God's switch". I love Lil' Louis (French Kiss, I Called You...). The song I was thinking about is not oneof his though. Thank you so much for commenting. I love to dialogue about old house music from my youth.
Pure rhythm. If you can't or don't feel inclined wind your hips to this - then you are a Death Metal fan or worse. The beats of this were used very well in the 1992 record "Feel It" by Coco Steel & Lovebomb, on Warp Records. Check it out on youtube. It rocks too.
The Hitman Hosiah Singende used to rock the airwaves back in Harare Zimbabwe way back in 89 there on. This was the s***.Oh take me back to Circus Nite Club baba.
Yeah buddy this was/is the shit. If you cant feel this track " THEN YOU ARE NOT ALIVE", YOU ARE DEAD". I miss those days just partying my ass off with my boys from new york/new jersey. This track would make true house heads loose their minds. Hit me back RASANTHONY
it was kenny kenny and/or fagot ass John @ the door... i remember when John caught a bad one from the regulars... good ol daze... hair flying all over the place trippin on asido... we need a redzone reunion.... fuck the chino from the deli on 54th...up the block....
WOW.....remember that deli?!?! During the winter we would go in there to stay warm while waiting for others before going into the Zone and they would always kick us out..........good memories!
This tune is so ahead of its time the smoke that these cats smoked shoulfd be distributed out to all if not most producers. The music of today from hip hop/rap to somehouse should go back to the drawing board . music really needs ome jumper cables & fast. Great track
Yo synergy365, whats cookin bro? Are you from the n.y./n.j. area? This tune is a life support system. My daughter would rock in the back of my car, she was only 3as i pumped this jam & many others that were hot @ that time. Hiphouse was a very unique era also. Hit me up my man.
No my friend - we were rocking this in London back in '89 when it was all going-off here. Hip-House (Twin Hype. Tony Scott, Doug Lazy, Jungle Brothers etc) was definitely kickin it back then too. Same vibe but on the other side :-) Respect, mate.
