Extraordinario.
(part 2) I see strong choreographic similarities between this video and well known V.Urq. dancers as La Turca y Dispari (dynamically they differ quite a bit).
But perhaps at that time those steps and moves were much more widespread through the city, and have been kept alive and kicking in V.Urq until our days?
@chiflandoungotan Dispari empezo a bailar hace por lo menos 40 anios (enie) no se con quien no queres compararlo (si es con el hijo porsupuesto que Jorge es mucho mas) pero no podes negar la calidad de Jorge!!!
(part 1) A very exciting question of tango theory (understanding) is opened here, after such respectful and enlightening contributions. How do we define this style (V.Urq)? My idea is that a style is mainly defined by the way we look at the dance in a particular moment.
Amazing performance!!! Tango 100%. Thank you for posting this video, Ney. I always wanted to see this great dancer in the dance floor. In Argentina we usually say "De tal palo tal astilla"
Thanks irenekyho, milonguerargentina (Julio), jmledeur, and amorfina (Nene M) for updating my understanding of V. Urquiza style. Under the charm of Gallo Ciego (again), I am being baffled by the exhilarating perfection of Don Miguel, un gran milonguero que debe descubrirse.
Miguel did not dance Villa Urquiza tango style, in fact he was from el Barrio de Boedo, he lived between Metan street y Pasaje Jantin, I know this because we used to play soccer as kids,(equipo Las Naciones) my name is Eduardo "El Nene Masci" and I'm very proud to have known him even if he was a Boca Junior's fun.
hee hee, thanks for the information amorfica - it is an interesting context for the tango. It is also a great help to europeans and foreigners to realise how styles are/were really tied to communities, where as we have to pick and choose without roots and tradition. I apreciate everyone's input and information !
Of course for porten~os is important where you dance in Buenos Aires but for the rest of us in the world is the quality of the dancing style, and this video show this in the most beautiful way,
Cid: I understand your statement, but let me add, that a good way to better understand and learn our worldwide beloved tango, all this information (where when, who, why etc..) is kind of great piece of information to keep educating us in this wonderful dance. I personaly thank "amorfica" and "milonguerargentina" for colaborating to know more facts.
Yes, but reading some statements from Tete the barrio is not so important as we may think, but the good dancers who defined I style which then was imitated from others which happened to live in the neighborhood.
hello everybody Miguel balmaceda Did not dance Villa Urquiza Style ,so he is dancing at salon canning ,i can tell you this because i am Julio and he was my father
Like Irene Kyho, I wonder whether Miguel Balmaceda himself would have or whether Julio, today, would characterize Miguel's style of dancing as " Villa Urquiza"....
In addition, Julio Balmaceda dances completely differently from the "Villa Urquiza dancers of yesterday or today, and he said he learned tango partly from his father. Miguel Balmaceda has also trained dancers that have not been identified with Villa Urquiza - Carolina Iotti and Marisa Galindo, for example. Can you please enlighten us on why you have chosen to include Miguel Balmaceda in your origins of Villa Urquiza series?
Ney, I think this is the first time I have seen someone characterize Miguel Balmaceda's dancing as "Villa Urquiza". El Chino Perico, Carlos Perez, Alberto (the one that you just posted) all share similar steps and interpretation of the music, but Miguel seems to be in a category that is different from these dancers.
For my own personal tango culture, what caracterizes this ' Villa Urquiza' style ? Its tenants (Jennifer's idol Javier R. included) seem rather sober, straight and fixed in the abraso but apart from that...?
Ney you are heading straight for the youtube oscar! (cat. Tango Argentino). This is a big treasure you are sharing with us. Thank you from our the deepest of our milonguero heart.
If tradition is respected, Don Miguel should be dancing with Nelly. The place is the old Salon Canning, when the street sign outside read Avenida Canning.
Another great video Ney, but another unfortunate choice of words to force the concept of styles to a lazy audience. :-)
Tahnks, PlanetTango. Should I read that Nelly is the ingenious partenaire of Don Miguel of Boedo style? Besides, how is one unique if one is having prominent followers as Don Miguel? The thing here is that we are trying to make a classification, mapping schools, leaders, etc. The profusion of documents and the quality of the testimonials make it a fast-tracking opportunity to revise and truly appreciate the immense contribution of the most discrete artists of the porteño scene.
so far, Miguel Balmaceda is my favourite genius tango dancer.

dispari no es milonguero. Empezo a bailar hace poco. No podes compararlo con miguel

De nadie dije que fuera milonguero. Y comparo hablando sobre estilos, por contraste, no para equiparar niveles de experiencia o calidad.

Thanks,Ney, for another gemstone of tango lore. Who's dancing with Don Miguel? The Villa Urquiza style is the epitome of elegance in tango.

Style is unique to every good dancer.
Don Miguel was, and still is, one of a kind.
