  • Does that work like an autoland?

  • Good video!!!!

  • Yeah so i have trouble with the speed of the plane, at what speed do you have to land and when do you have to throttle back for the landing?

  • Thankyou man!

  • wow a really good vedio. but how do u know at what heading is the runway?

  • perffecttt this is for my 777 panel

  • Thank you!!!!!!

  • Lo que no se es como activar el ils.

  • @mateoflight140398 tienes que activar el NAV 1 o 2 de acuerdo a como lo tengas configurado y activar el AP

  • Thank you so much! I couldn't find anything else on this topic!

  • fantastic information and you layed it out so well and straight forward. Thank you for explaining. I thought I knew pretty much all I needed to know to fly well in flight sim but now I will be better thank you.

  • i dont get it?

  • I need to find something just like this but for the smaller planes

  • I'm missing something here. I was flying from Edwards CA. to Flagstaff AZ. The Flagstaff heading was 211. I set what I thought was 211 on my OBS dial. My KFLG was to my Northeast and my 211 heading took my plane Southwest away from my airport. Can you show us how the numbers on that OBS dial works. I was flying in circles. Also what all needs to be set? NAV? GPS? Also there's something to do with the correct altitude for the ILS to "CATCH" my plane? Please explain more.

  • Great video

  • Great Video!

  • best instructions ive seen for ils approach thanks alot m8 great explination

  • So is there a New Flight similator coming out soon? FSX?

  • Very good instructional video even if a bit blurry. Well detailed and well explained.

  • i put the freq and the heading then activte the freq , then nav switich , then app and nothing happiens what iam missing ?

  • Well explaine, nice, clear and precise informations.

  • huh?

  • Nice video for learning flyer for FSX like me!! :)

  • THK captain. I have been on FS for 4 years and have never seen such an amazingly simple tutorials. It helped a lot. Many thanks for your time that you have put in to this for us to learn for free. My deepest appreciations.

  • great informative video thanks!

  • thanks for the help!!!!

  • nice video capt u know fell like a flight instructor ;)

btw i love this default 777 with pacifica textures i flyed my longest flight with him ;D

istanbul st marteen :D 13 hours in fron of the pc :D

  • very nice!!! this video helped me alot

  • good video, but seriously though, you made one mistake within the first second that makes you seem like a 9 year old. AN FS9 movie. not A FS9 movie.

Say 'A FS9 movie' to yourself a couple of times and I'm sure you'll realise that it does not sound good

  • Great tutorial.Has helped me out greatly.Thanks :)

  • thanks so much this helped me so much.

  • thanks!

  • tnx man!

  • why da hell can i bring my PMDG 747/737 level d 767 into approuch on the ils but not the default planes ROFL

  • this is a realy good video on the ils very well setout cheers

  • Very good. Wonderful video.

  • thanks captn for your support

  • great video, well done

  • Lol, big fail. When I was getting close to the airport, I got too low and too slow, the result: stall, and a crash. I gotta redo this...

  • I have seen a lot of videos covering the ILS system. This time, after watching yours, I hope I succeed on the landing.

  • Wow, good vid. very helpful

  • RATE OF DECENT: APPROACH ANGLE X (GROUND SPEED / 60) X 100

    3 x (160/60) x 100 = 800 FPS

  • wow that's complicated.... Why don't you just take half your ground speed and add a zero.

  • good idea though

  • it's a good rule of thumb and it'll get you close everytime.

  • I hope you mean 800 fpm :)

  • Thanks for the good video. I would like to send an invitation to you and all the viewers that need help with ILS landings to join us on our game spy server called "EasternHops" thanks again Easternhorizon Host of EasternHops

  • Tanx Capt, 1. Which Heading am i flying? ILS OR WAYPT B?If not when do i change to ILS Heading?cheers

  • Thanks a lot CaptWetterholm, I really needed someone to show me how to do this, if I met you in person I would shake your hand!!!

  • any1 know the link to CAT III tutorial?

  • ohh yes , i found it , greaaat , realy thanks a lot miso 871 :)

  • its realy great but there is something i dunno and want your help !! How can i know the frequency to tune the NAV 1 ???

  • look on the map on FS on airport at which you want to land, press left mouse button few times and list of frequencys will emerge

  • the ATC would let the pilots knows the NAV 1 frequency before they commence their final approach ...

  • im having trouble catching the glide slope... The pink dot shows up on the glideslope thing on the screen, but my aircraft dont stick to it.. Also localizer works FINE, just glide slope, any help?

  • thank you very much for this tutorial it ws very halpfull and i suucses landing my first ILS...

  • Fantastic aid for using ILS in MSFC, wish I had this 10 years ago when I started using MSFC98, with me it was very much trial and error.

    Thanks Captain.

  • Great tutorial!. Greetings from Miami.

  • thank you very much , it really helped me to know the ils basics , thnx for posting

  • yes good video

  • Excellent video.

    Many thanks.

  • in the simulator, for an ILS approach, its really simple, just enter your frequency and hit the APP button. in real life, its practically the same thing or sometimes pilots use the FMC. anyway, great video to explain this technique

  • Can you aply this simulation onto a real plane ????

  • You can't apply the simulation into an actual instrument airplane, but can definitely apply the fundamental of the ILS approach. It's exactly the same in real-world aviation.

  • it brings a little help when you fly a real plane!!!!

  • is it like this in real life?

  • yeah that's what I mean applying it to real aircraft!!!

  • great vid!! Thank's for the explanation.

  • Thank you very much for this informative video.

  • Very informative.Thank you for this excellent video!

  • muy bueno.. ahora a ponerlo en practica.. hasta ahora siempre aterrizaba en forma manual :P jaja

  • Thx! Helped me a lot!

  • hi, how do i set the radio frequency to ils approach?

i have to comunicate to atc?

who gives you that frequency for ils?

  • ILS frequency is on your chart. You must look at a map and see for the runway what is the ILS (for example you are coming to runway 8R at airport SHMECK) so you look at the schmeck chart and find the frequency for that runway

  • its in the com radio, it the nav one

  • Check it from the map. Select the airport and look for your runway. There is it. :)

  • thank you ever sooo much for such a well structured tutorial......you have answered so simply questions that I had re- this subject......thank you again!

  • thanks, great!

  • Are you supposed to land with the Flight Director duting ils?

  • keep it on, it wont affect the ils system

  • Why my glideslope doesnt work?

    Only the localizer.

i set everything oredy, but my glideslope is still in the middle line. Doesnt move at all.

  • What airport and runway?

Some runways are equipped with localizer only.

  • did you press the app button?

  • "Red triangles"?? Red quadrangles!!

  • Triangle was a language error.

    Square is the best word!

(A square is a special case of a quadrangle)

  • I know that they do not use "quadrangeles", but wanted tp point out, that it is not "triangle". Best word for these figures is "boxes", at least it is most often used when a "highway in the sky" flightpath is described.

  • OK, thanks. Have a look at the video now!

Check it out around 7:48 ->>

  • Great insert at 7:48 now!

  • Every Time I initiate ILS the plane fies the right heading but doesn't catch the glide slope I need help PLZ!!!

  • All Sorted I think forgot to catch the glideslope (descend to catch the localizer)

  • Intercept the glide slope from below.

  • Thanks everyone! I don't have time to answer all comments or questions.

  • brilliant video...helped me tons doing stuff actually in the aircraft

  • cool video i am trying to landings ils but dont understand i keep crashing i dont knw what im doing wrong

  • Ur Crashing , thats wrong =)

  • beeen trying to figure out ils landings watched the video a couple of time i dont still understand it would be awsome if i knw how to do it ! :)

  • ILS is guidance, not autoland! you should disengage the autopilot when u are above the runway and land manually!

  • Thanks alot mate!

  • BEST ILS VID OUT THERE!!!! i took down all the stuff i thought was important(almost everything) and it was awesome , i can finaly land a plane (in FS2004/FS9) without crashing xDDDD YAY!!!

  • Thanks!

  • Well done and thank you for sharing this!

  • Excellent tutorial. clear and simple to understand.

  • this is the best ILS lesson in youtube

    thanks very much

    nice landing too...

  • i tried a freeware plane with the ils and its not working why?

  • probably bad quality, not all aircraft do this correctly, default cessna is good practice

  • thnks what plane is that is payware?

  • thanks man, now i maybe get to land my plane....

  • Thanks !

  • Verry good video, sir. Thank you

  • Thanks, this answered a lot of questions!

  • I wanna thank to Capt. This vid helped me a lot.I Use FSX.I`m really happy to know how to land IFR.

  • awesome video! i understood how it works.finally!!

  • Very well explained, very good tutorial.

  • Now i finally understand and know how to do ILS stuff, thanks, this video is going straight to my favorites.

  • A great video, Thanks a lot!

  • super vid! Thanx

  • im confused do u use the approach or tha NAV u cant do dem both at same tym + how do u do with fmc i cant find any videos tyvm

  • you should just be using the APP mode, it will track the glide slope for you instead of adjusting your VS yourself.

  • Thanks this helped me a lot.

  • Guys I am planning to assemble a new computer to meet THE BEST FSX STANDARDS. Suggestions/changes if any, are welcome:

    1. EVGA nForce 790i Ultra SLI Motherboard

    2. Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83 Ghz

    3. CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM

    4. EVGA GeForce 9800GX2 1GB

    5 SIGMA Focus SP600B 600W ATX12V Power Supply

    6. Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-Bit

    7. Creative Sound Blaster SB0570 7.1 Audigy SE Sound Card

    8. ViewSonic X Series VX1962wm 19 LCD

  • Switch the graphics card for a GeForce 5200

  • SO? I HAVE 2 LCD TV 52' WITH FSX

  • you dont wanna go for fsx standards... u wanna kill that and kill it big time

  • Man thanx.Have to try it tonight.

  • nice vid!

hey thanx a lot. I KNOW HOW TO DO ILS NOW!

    thx a gain.

  • Great!

  • wow , nice landing at the end

  • thanks!

  • I am planning to assemble a new computer especially for FSX and I've selected the following hardware. Please advice!

    1) EVGA nForce 780i SLI FTW motherboard

    2) Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 (2.83GHz; 1333Mhz)

    3) CORSAIR 4GB(2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 memory

    4) Two EVGA GeForce 9600GT 512MB for SLI and

    5) Windows Vista Home Premium.

  • not bad! Here are some pointers, I think its good to use 2 Dimms (so you can add more on later) but if it's in your budget consider getting faster memory. And the other thing is the graphics cards. 9600's are good but in the world of graphics there already somewhat dated. Of course you have to look at your budget and see what you can afford. If you want to do a SLI configuration then I suggest a 9800gt/gtx (note the "GT" is a single slot and the "GTX" is a 2 slot). What's your psu and os bit?

  • I planning to include Winodws Vista Home Premium 64-Bit version. Wats the cost of of a 9800GT or GTX+ ? Does it cost nething around 180USD? And SMPS of wat power will it need 600W?

  • Tiger Direct has a GT overclocked for $130 and the regular for $120. The GTX is $150 for regular clock and $200 for overclock. If you plan on putting 2 of any of these in SLI you need to go to nvida and look under SLI to see what PSU's are compatible (I would suggest getting 700w or more, that is if your doing SLI). It really depends on: how big your case is, how much $ you want to spend, and if you want a single card or two card solution. The GT is great for small cases but not as fast as GTX

  • <3

    Hi CaptWetterholm!

Can you make a bombarier CRJ tutorial pls. I need help learning ILS with it. I mastered auto pilot controled flight but don't kow how to set the radio.

I have the flight sim x

thx for the info it really helped.

  • Hi!

I will post an update of my ILS tutorial next year.

    Mike

  • I don't know why but when I press the NAV button, the plane climbs... any idea why? NAV1 is tuned to the correct ILS frequency, course heading is set, but it climbs. Is the autopilot supposed to be on?

  • hmm, strange, try to engage the APP-button.

  • Five stars !! great video thanks for posting this.

  • Capt, Can't we use ILS with VFR?

  • thanx alot to you CaptWetterholm....thanx thanx thanx..... u r a gr8 teacher of mine

  • do you also have to flip the DME switch??

  • Capt, good tutorial. Now, I have FS2002 and I can't find the flight visual path enabler. Also, where can I find the ILS frequency of any airport?. If I double click on a runway, it gives me some frequncies but nothing called ILS freq.

    Please help.

    Thanks...Jaime

  • See my comment below, when you hover mouse over the localiser either end of the runway on the map feature the ILS frequency is shown, took me ages to figure that out trawling through the help files!!

  • scroll down in the facilities available window when u click on a runway. It is mostly given at the last. All the runways are listed of that airport and infront of them are their respective ils frequencies and ils headings.

  • Best ILS tutorial ever. All other tutorials are just messed up this is perfect. Very very good. I have one question: How do you taxi in the right speed? I am just too slow or to fast. And how do you know which altitude of interception to the glideslope.

  • Add some thrust to start with. When the plane starts moving pull back to nearly idle thrust and use the brakes to maintain proper taxi speed. However, some aircraft models in FS just dont taxi in a realistic way and may require more thrust. A typical altitude to intercept the localiser is around 1500- 2500 feet but I suggest you read the approach chart for the specific approach.

  • Ok, thanks alot

  • In MS FS 98 the CRS on the HSI was auto set to runway heading when you tuned into the ILS, MS FS 04 doesnt do this and you have to do it yourself, not at all clear from the tutorials/help, eventually figured out have to get ILS frequencies off the map function and input into NAV1, thanks for the CRS tip mate!

  • hey can you get that VFP for FSX??

  • I tried landing using ILS, i have performed few perfect smooth landings right on the centre line. BUT i've noticed that ILS doesnt always point towards the centre line even when i'm on the correct approach with the APP button engaged, as ive landed away from the runway.

can someone please tell me how this could be, what could i be doing wrong?

    thanks

  • If you post a video that shows your problem I might tell you what the problem is. However, as you get closer to the runway, the ILS becomes more sensitive. Unless you know that your simulator/aircraft support full auto land feature, I suggest that you disengage the autopilot before or at 200 feet (AGL) and continue manually.

  • no problem!

  • i knowit from another video now, u could say earlir that u have to get them from the MAP!!! u just said put in the frequancy, i didnt even know where to get it!!! but ok

  • I missed your question, sorry. I have answered this question earlier (see earlier comments). Well, great that you found it out anyway.

  • and how u get the ILS frequency u put

  • so the crss= cours always has to be the runeways number, right?

  • set the crs to runway heading

  • yeah! very good video. =D

  • thanks

  • Hey GLADIATOR 536. thanks alot for your help in operating the ILS. My landing has improved alot compared to before. Landed right on the centre line few times, but i've also realised that the ILS does not always point you towards centre line, so small adjustments are required. Once again thanks.

  • Hey "GLADIATOR 536" thank you so much for your reply. I will follow your instructions that you have given me when i play flight sim and will get back to you on how well the flight went.

  • other remaining questions below.

please get back on them. urgent

Do i set the ILS frequency as well as the heading indicated in the briefing found using the kneeboard before takeoff or during flight?

After tuning in the ILS frequency on the radio, as well as ensuring that NAV 1 is active do i also ensure that the 'ADF' button is active too?

Is course "CRS" and the heading the same thing? i get confused when tuning the settings.

    thanks

  • answer to ur first question no. not on takeoff. 2. after tuning in ILS freq in NAV1 do it in NAV2 as well this will help the autopilot fly the approach which is a way for u to see n learn for urself. 3. no the CRS is not the same as heading, in a way they r simialr tho, the CRS is to help u align urself with the RWY on the app. hdg is what makes the aurcraft roll. if u have ne futher questions feel free to send a message my way. hope i help a lil.

  • let explain a little more about the 3rd question u have, the heading and CRS are not the same but similar, the CRS is direction ur aircraft should be pointin toward after u intercept the localizer thous ur headin should be in that direction too.

  • After watching so many tutorials, i still cant land the plane using ILS. i'm missing few basic things out but dont no exactly what.

Can someone please help and answer my questions. much appreciated. thanks

Do i switch the NAV/GPS switch to NAV and press the NAV button too or just select the NAV switch?

  • yes to fly the ILS approach u must be in NAV mode, but make sure 1. ur NAV radios are tuned, 2. Ur CRS is set. and 3. ofcourse ur aircraft is configured for landing, I.e. flaps and gears are down, and ur speed is correct. after confirming all these steps, just watch ur Glideslope, localizer, altitude and speed, those are what u wanna keep ur eyes on, do that and u should be fine. it does take some gettin use to, but keep practicing, ull get it down eventually. :)

  • You Legend! Ive been pulling my hair out trying to work this out, your video helps loads!

  • OMG dude thank u soo much for this video...because now i understand ILS unlike in the "flying lessons" thingy in fs9...i understood it better the way u taught it.....

  • Muchas gracias. Ha sido un gran video explicativo de como funciona básicamente un ILS.,. Estoy muy agradecido. Adios!! :)

  • Thanks! This is first tutorial that really explains something about the ILS! I almost jumped down from my balcony because of those FSX lessons..that Rod Machado explains ILS in Cessna but not in Boeing. Had to take ATP lesson for about 100 times because I couldn't land ILS, couldn't find the horizontal line in Boeing. Thanks, now I know where the glidescope is in that damn plane :D!

  • A helpful video! But I got the warning " Below GS". Does it mean "Below Glideslope" ? If so, how do i fix it?

  • Basically, it means that the glideslope is above you. Its coming down at an angle, and you are below it. What that means is , you have to keep flying, until you enter it, then the warning lamp should go out. Also, the glideslope indicator on the ILS will start to move down towards the centre.

  • Hello.

Firstly, this is a fantastic tutorial and I actually learned how to perform landings with the ILS from this video, so many thanks to CaptainWetterholm for this wonderful tutorial. Once you practice and practice (and it may take time and a lot of patience), you will master this and get better and more accurate with your landings!

Finally, to answer some questions about the ILS frequencies and course - go to the map chart, double click the airport and there you have them!

    Thanks again.

  • if hit app in autopilot mode, will the plane auto glideslope, or does that have to be done manually?

  • If you hit APP with ALT lock engaged, you are are still below the glideslope the plane -should- continue flying on ALT hold until you intercept the glideslope. Then the APP hold will guide you down to 500 feet .
