Mammoth emotion! Plangent resonance!
A deity!
He is THE tenor of the second half of the 20th Century. No doubt. I just wish he would have done at least 1 Siegfried.
Just one!
His Huguenots recordings show how thrilling he would have been!
Fantasic voice, and a very unique technique suited to his voice, but He would have never been able to sing a Siegfried, because of the nature and type of technique he employd for his voice, Siegfried is written in such a way that would have challenged him severely. Corelli's placement is slightly higher, perfect for spinto roles, and the dramatic Italian repertoire, but I'm afraid he would have strugled to sing a Siegfried or even a Siegmund for that matter. He knew what was best for his voice.
@paddaman1 I studied with Corelli and his voice is Italian and would have been wasted in German rep. His style is passion in abundance. He knew what was best. He did not like German music and did not understand it really. He is the singer of the middle of the last century, and no one is likely to hear that kind of passion today. It scares conductors when they have to follow a singer who is prone to showing off his voice, which is what made Corelli so thrilling.
this is not an ordinary case and we can't say " one more first class tenor " .he was a phenomenon , like Callas , a very precious gift which God sent to us !
NOT A GIFT!!! caruso, ponselle, ruffo were MIRACLES and gifts. they worked hard but need NOT to depend on a technique but they all three had one! corelli worked like a madman to CREATE the instrument from nothing to what you hear here. an outstanding display of technique and amazing breath(support) control. top ten tenor for sure!!!!! one of the greatest instruments evern. BUT, NOT one of the miracles of PURE beauty and natural gift!
I agree. It's somewhat unfair to compare different singers amongst each others. I've listened to a lot of renditions of this piece but none of these can compare to the one by Caruso. There you can FEEL the melody, whereas here you only hear it.

agree with you. Corelli's tone is, hmmm... 'Michelangiolesque'... and yes, much 'heroical', even 'herculean' and a touch Baroque if not manneristic...

These eyes of mine crave to see you Crave to see you one more time!
to be remembered by those who "know" about opera would have destroyed the chances od caruso singing bell canto with open full voice when everybody was being carefull of singing correctly.
Actually for me Caruso bears a lot of similarities to Corelli: big, dark, warm, rich and thrilling voices, both with very individual singing styles, both having the rare ability to captivate audiences by uniquely conveying emotions through their singing etc.
For me, Corelli's voice is not baritonal and nothing like Caruso's. Judging from recordings, Caruso fairly early became a dramatic tenor with a much darker voice than Corelli's. Of course, the basic technique of producing the voice, and the passion of expression, are similar.
Corelli is grandious, powerfull, handsome, elegant, who can not admit that, his baritonal qualities, his diminuendos, Lord he was fantastic, but pavarotti will always be remembered, like caruso will always be remembered and not fleta so much. thats all, lirico, spinto, dramatico, all clasifications, but not degrees of talent.
comparing corelli with pavarotti is like comparing fiat with ferrari, both italian made by the same manufacturer but different products, pavarotti is unique, Corelli is great! tats the difference, you will find 100's of tenores de forza in history, but one pavarotti, his talent, his charisma, his easyness to sing were unmatched by franco. he was awesome collosal, grandious, but Not Pavarotti.
Tenore di forza, or dramatic tenors, are far more rare than the lyric counterpart, to which Pavarotti belonged. There have been far more exceptional lyrical tenors other than Pavarotti; Caruso, Gigli, Bjorling, Di Stefano...the list goes on.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yes I understand this basic concep erialm, but the type of voice doesn't represent thetype of talent, Pavarotti's talent was to conect to everybody, Corelli only with few, like Del Monaco, o Even Fleta back when, or now Cura instead of Villazol, The talent can't be disguised by drama.
The only thing Pavarotti instead of Corelli did was to appeal to the masses who have very little understanding of opera or voice in general. It is as Kraus said; "I'd rather be loved by those who truly understand oprea than by the masses who don't". Pavarotti was loved by many due to the skill of his mass-marketing, not because of the greatness of his voice.
I heard Pavarotti in Chicago, he had a truly great voice.. interestingly enough it wasn't the high voice that was most impressive, but the lower voice. It was a huge, secure voice, he made a mistake and it sounded like the orchestra was wrong. And, not a great movie, but listen to his Nessun Dorma in Yes Giorgio... astounding.. maybe it was the milk as a baby cause Freni had it too.
nice example, only that Corelli is the ferrari and Pavarotti the fiat, you comparing Corelli to "100's of tenores de forza" shows either way too much bias or quite simply a complete lack of knowledge.
as usual stefan-you come through with the most amazing material. I wish you could have talked to Corelli about this concert when you invu'd him-He really seed overwhelmed at the amount and intensity of the applause. You never did talk to him about this right?
Not here.Potts shouldn't sing anything related to la lirica or any canzone Neapolitan.Ah,I guess 2 or 3 million sales of cd's will make him a real tenor and shut us up but probably won't do either.
Corelli was master of Calaf,Manrico,Chenier,Radames and Ernani.Del Monaco was Otello,Tucker was Alvaro.Desidera il corelli in tensione il tenore più grande di tutto il tempo
Many thanks to Stephan Zucker for posting this. He has interviews with Corelli at BelCanto that will melt your heart. YouTube just removed the fabulous Nessun Dorma tape. All the little personal moments in this performance really make it magical! Francophilia!
Superb interpretation! As Mesospeak notes, Corelli's clarion voice and natural intensity could often seem like "too much" of a good thing in lighter works but here he's brilliant.
The video is so touching too. His infamous nerves are on display at the beginning (imagine being so gifted and so beautiful and yet still so insecure!) but it's the genuine pleasure he shows at the audience's acclaim and the humility with which he acknowledges it that really gets to me. Bravo, Corelli!
I have heard almost every major male tenor of the past century sing this aria (Domingo, Pavarotti, Carreras, Kraus, Alagna, Bonisolli, Lanza, Caruso, etc...)and none have matched Corelli's interpretation. For some of the lighter arias, Corelli's voice is too over-powering but for this one it is quite appropriate. He felt this song in his heart and he makes you feel it too.
I agree with you, Corelli was not suited for the lighter arias, but he pulls this one off. The thing about Corelli was that he was so exciting to listen to, You just knew you were watching a tenor of unreal talent.
One of my Heros, what a force of nature,, and he understood what the jaw was all about. Thank you for the post Stephan and your promoting of the Great Franco!
you asked "was he a real human being?" An Angel, as far as I'm concerned. I've got to get this DVD. Saw him a bunch of times in the mid-70s including one concert with Tebaldi, he knocked your socks off even on "off" nights.
This clip well captures Corelli's fire and passion, essential components of his art. Note, also, the widely open mouth on high notes, favoring the left side.
They just don't make them like Franco Corelli anymore...what an agonizing shame. I've heard this song sung by all the greats and those not-so-great, and no one delivers wildfire like the great maestro Corelli. He consumed the audience with his voice.
I looked up the word 'passion' in the dictionary, I saw Corelli's face. What a performance.

Actually there are many tenors like Luciano but none was complete like Dario.

Many tenors like Pavarotti....
Probably the most stupid comment i've ever heard.
theonlygriffo 4 years ago
comparing corelli with pavarotti is like comparing fiat with ferrari, both italian made by the same manufacturer but different products, pavarotti is unique, Corelli is great! tats the difference, you will find 100's of tenores de forza in history, but one pavarotti, his talent, his charisma, his easyness to sing were unmatched by franco. he was awesome collosal, grandious, but Not Pavarotti.
giacomolaurivolpi 4 years ago
Tenore di forza, or dramatic tenors, are far more rare than the lyric counterpart, to which Pavarotti belonged. There have been far more exceptional lyrical tenors other than Pavarotti; Caruso, Gigli, Bjorling, Di Stefano...the list goes on.

Yes I understand this basic concep erialm, but the type of voice doesn't represent thetype of talent, Pavarotti's talent was to conect to everybody, Corelli only with few, like Del Monaco, o Even Fleta back when, or now Cura instead of Villazol, The talent can't be disguised by drama.
giacomolaurivolpi 4 years ago

Davidoff1Gustav 4 years ago
this is not a pavarotti video or anything to do with him.
MusashiTzu 4 years ago
nice example, only that Corelli is the ferrari and Pavarotti the fiat, you comparing Corelli to "100's of tenores de forza" shows either way too much bias or quite simply a complete lack of knowledge.
waltersoto777 4 years ago 2
as usual stefan-you come through with the most amazing material. I wish you could have talked to Corelli about this concert when you invu'd him-He really seed overwhelmed at the amount and intensity of the applause. You never did talk to him about this right?

Pavarotti Manrico. You are joking. The best pira and role of manrico belong to either Corelli or Lauri Volpi.

Bravo, Corelli!
marietherese 4 years ago
I have heard almost every major male tenor of the past century sing this aria (Domingo, Pavarotti, Carreras, Kraus, Alagna, Bonisolli, Lanza, Caruso, etc...)and none have matched Corelli's interpretation. For some of the lighter arias, Corelli's voice is too over-powering but for this one it is quite appropriate. He felt this song in his heart and he makes you feel it too.

How bout Mario Del Monaco??
Tenortone21 4 years ago
Del Monaco is Othello!
tonytib 4 years ago
I agree with you, Corelli was not suited for the lighter arias, but he pulls this one off. The thing about Corelli was that he was so exciting to listen to, You just knew you were watching a tenor of unreal talent.

I'm simply mesmerized by this live performance. It makes me wish that Italy could really be all about Corelli or Di Stefano's prodigious singing.

Sheer genius. A unique gift. I would give a year of my life to have heard him live once.

Only Corelli could sing like this, was he a real human being? Bravissimo, maestro per sempre
gonzalojosevb 4 years ago
you asked "was he a real human being?" An Angel, as far as I'm concerned. I've got to get this DVD. Saw him a bunch of times in the mid-70s including one concert with Tebaldi, he knocked your socks off even on "off" nights.

Unbelievable.
