I'm also a VT alum and I've rushed the field myself (against WVU, ironically enough.) It's definitely a good tradition for beating such a highly ranked team as long as the goal posts are lowered beforehand and there's therefore little risk for safety. They were doing that as the video starts, so they're essentially telling everyone that they're preparing for a field rush. Taking that into account, the police are way over the line by using excessive force.

I think rushing the field is a stupid tradition, and potentially dangerious for the FG post climbers.  With that being said, even though I am a Virginia Tech alum and supporter, the actions of a few police officers/security guards crossed the line. If a select few are not seeking employment in a few days, something is very wrong with that profession and the people involved in it.

I am an officer in Pitt County, so before you go running off at the mouth those students were told over the PA system not to run onto the field. So they never should have been out there. They should have run to the parking lot and ran home. I used to work event security at the RBC Center in Raleigh. Our procedure during major NCSU basketball victories was to form a perimeter and try our best to direct the flow of students. We knew it was going to last long, and eventually we would be overtaken. Once overtaken, we were to step to the side for our safety, and let the students do their thing. The have guardrails you genius to set boundaries behind the goal posts. If they didn't have it there, fans would be on the field during game time. This is C-USA, not the SEC. When a team from this conference records a win like this, they ENCOURAGE you to rush the field, as long as it doesn't get to the point of bodily harm, thus why they take the goalposts beforehand.
