  • masterpiece. thanks mark.

  • Beautiful video. Thanks for posting.

Tears of joy watching this one.

  • I must have heard at least 20 intros to this song...and all are so very dear and special...

  • In my top ten fav songs

  • i was there...mark is a god guitar...

  • would love to attend one of these private concerts

  • one of the best love songs ever! thanx for posting!

  • In all of his concerts, whenever he plays romeo and juliet with that guitar. The way it shines. Epic.

  • Thank you. I was lucky to get this before MK decided to ban videos from concerts.

  • @aflagg

really superb, magic, surreal - always a pleasure to see him performing

  • @aflagg

Mark Knopfler never decided to ban videos from concerts. Actually, he wants the audience to be allowed to record or film the concert. It's the arrangers of the concerts that says it is not allowed.

  • This is *very* good for an audience video! I'll bet you could have kicked the person who whistled at 4-something.

His dobro, oh, how it flashes.

  • Beautiful song !

    Let There Be Light !

    To all & forever !

    ( : - )

  • I was there. 5th row. One of the best nights of my life.

  • @MusicLover101000 one of the best songs ever wrote.

  • I spent many years loving this song. The recorded version, then old versions, even this new version. In my opinion, the greatest love song of all time. Married my lovely wife, and danced to this song.

This song holds a special place for me, and several great friends.

    Greatest love song ever written....

  • wrong. It is two people, reunited old-flames... When they first met and were starting out in the world, they knew what they were about (each other). Now, when he asks her once again 'you and me, babe... how about it?' She seems interested ("my boyfriend's back"), then scolds him for coming around and asks what he's going to do about his feelings. The chorus is our Romeo's pleas that she remember what was. That's the rest of the song too... an accounting of what they were and sacrificed

  • right on brother

  • @ctedone The Indigo Girls covered it well, too.

  • @ctedone Love songs usually suck. Lame.. boring. typical. But when you get the right love song, when the greatest of them all makes it, it becomes amazing.

No doubt, GREATEST love song ever.

  • I just love the way the live version begins.

  • MK is a musical genius......

  • Love that national guitar sound. This is one of the best romeo & juliet performances, very emotive and elegant at one time.

  • Does anyone know who the other guitar player is (the guy on the strat)? OMG, that guy has AMAZING tone. this is a beautiful version of this song. MK is so wonderfully tasteful.

  • That's Richard Bennett, one of Mark's regulars. I agree he's very good and is the perfect rhythm compliment to Mark's lead.

  • this is beautiful

  • one of my favourite songs.

  • Incredibly beautiful. every album from Dire Straits to today just gets better.

  • i can't do everything, but i'd do anything for you (L)

  • That guitar he's playing is probably worth more than your house and everything in it. Amazing.

  • Yeah really good love song :)

  • The best love song ever - thank you for posting this -

  • This was the song that introduced me to Dire Straits back in 1981. I love it as much now as I did then, and this is a brilliant version. Thank you poster:)

  • I rember seeing them in london in the 90s doing this at earls court excellent

  • Brilliant!

What a great live version of this amazing lovesong!

    MK - ALL TIME GREATEST!!!

  • One of my favorite songs of all time.. the ending on this video is just beautiful..

~ All I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme... love this stanza.. : )

  • Great performance. Mark is one of the best guitarists EVER.

  • Who was that knob who whilstled at 4:00, he fricking hurt my fucking ear. I wanna fuck him up irl.

  • Proving that old men are very sexy!

  • history will remark this man as a composer on the rank of a Bach or Mozart, a great genius performing in the Pop medium.

  • love you mark.x

  • wow!..bam!bam!... dude...all I can say is bam! bam! ;)....this might sound uniform but who's this singer--knopfler? but now a fan...different sound then the Killers but wow! bam! bam!

  • did mark miss the "bad company" line?

  • sometimes live he changes the lines much like he does with the guitar parts, like he said in rocknroll company instead,

  • Im with a girl and i have just started to fall in love with her. I feel for her how i feel about this song. I wish i could get my feelings across to her as well

  • his voice doesnt seem to get older....how does he do that???:D

  • Someone says he signed a contract with Satana... 4 play and sing so good... i just dunno but...

    Well... he play really awesome!!!

  • Satan taught him guitar and God blessed him.

  • my fave song - hope to hear this live soon,

PS i heard the killers cover - very poor by comparison. nowehere near this good

  • Thanks for the video - This is really a great version of the song - Mark's in great form - one of the best "yearning" songs ever... I think he still means it!

  • i have got the piano sheet for this song

  • Jezus,

The beginning with the piano was really great I loved it...

  • The intro gave me goosebumps. Great song.

  • i couldnt agree more he is my idol!!!! Best artist of all time!!! Great job recording that video!!!

  • Probably one of the best songs ever written!

    I love it!

    Thanks for recording this...

  • Great video , Wish the sound quality was better.

  • Great job filming this! Wow! Thanks for taking the trouble. What a great performance. He's the man, still, after 20-odd years.

  • i don't care how much money i need to pay it's all worth it just to hear him play going home

  • I´m gonna see mark knopfler in madrid next week, n me and the guy i´m going with have been wondering if he plays a lot of his old dire straits stuff?? Not that we don´t like or appreciate his solo works, which i thoroughly enjoy too. But it would really be great to see him rocking with som tracks such as sultans of swing, tunnel of love, etc...

  • He plays a great variety at his shows. He doesnt always play this song though, and its my fave.

  • He plays: Sultans Of Swing, Telegraph Road, Romeo & Juliet, So Far Away, Brothers In Arms and Going Home :) Those are the ones which are DS songs.

  • I saw him in Rotterdam, I think he played 2 songs of his new album? rest were all 'classics'.

The one's Leksingen posted, and I can remember hearing "What it is", "Postcards from Paraguay" and "Local Hero".

  • knopfler rules!!!

  • i agree with the audience applauding before the end, it really does ruin it...i hate that, i just want them to shut up and i want to listen to the end of the song, because that part is only like the best part!

  • i cant understand... why he change the original? couse original is better! hes not older i think... but will be im my heart forever ... dont do that whit your songs mark, i lov u and dire, but this version i cant feel anithing..and original thake me to a better place...

  • I agree, but Mark can't hear you!

  • amazing...the audience ruins the end a bit though, I don't like the way they applaude before the song is finished. It destroyes the atmosphere at the end. But Mark is allways great

  • I cant believe the copy right gistapo took the official video away. your hurting me man!

  • ho i brividi..

  • but yeah. this is just perfection.

  • wow. i think that was the night i was there.

  • Oh I wish I knew what keys was being played at the intro its fantastic

  • Just beuatiful. the piano at the start is dreamy and just perfect. I love Dire straits but love it when he strips it down like this.

  • Nice video thx for upload=)

  • I just miss the shows when they had the slide guitars and saxophones and everything!!

  • Really? I'm happy he simplified his act since Dire Straits. I always hated the 14 piece ensemble for Sultans of Swing.

  • Hmm for sultans of swing it probably didn't add much but for Romeo and Juliet I think the slide guitars realy packed an emotional punch! but personal prefernce i guess.

  • I like men who revere poetry. Love one who makes it about us :)

  • PURE POETRY

  • I think it is 'through the bars of a rhyme' - as in singing her this song.....

  • Yes, it is..

  • it;s " kiss you through the bars of orion" - I looked it up.

  • Uuhhgg, I looked it up in my special 2disc edition (Dire Straits & Mark Knopfler: private investigations special edition 2CD) which came with a booklet full of Mark Knopfler quotes and other members of the band, a guide through their career etc. and the official lyrics said: "Through the bars of a rhyme"

  • One of my absolute favorites :)

  • Its GENIUS ..but yeah get the point ..really good song :)

  • A Genious

  • wow good version of the song

  • Romeo, Romeo

  • its so unique.. nothing's ever going to sound like this

  • As great as this is, and it is great, Check out Monte Montgomery's cover of it. All by himself, no accompaniment. Mark would be as proud as Dylan was when Hendrix re-did "All Along the Watchtower.

  • let's let mark make that judgement. he need's no cover to complement the genius

  • Sweet

  • MR.WONDERFUL.

  • like how he steps out of the shade to start the song.hes awesome.

  • what a nice guitar and player

  • greatest guitarist in the world!!!!

  • Eric Clapton on rythm guitar?

  • no, it's Richard Bennet

  • el oh el

  • No...

  • my boyfriend's back

  • Thanks, one of Dire Straits best tunes. B/

  • thanks for this aflagg. i had to drive to LA instead of spending my time in Berkeley. now I know what I missed.

    again thanks

  • Knopfler = Genious

  • Simply incredible...Thank you.

  • tank you and for sure it is true the bars of a rhyme ;-)

    tanks for posting !!!

  • "and i can't do anyting 'cept be in love with you" - swauve!

(through the bars of Orion, or the bars of a rhyme? whatever, its lovley)

  • Through the bars of a rhyme, i think. Man, this is a great version of the song. According to Marks official website, the DVD from the tour with emmylou is coming out in November and I feel like a child on christmas eve waiting for it.

  • It has always (more) sounded to me like "bars of Orion", even more so here. "Orion" fits with the "stars" in the next line. But dang it, the "bars of a rhyme" could be a pun for "in my songs/verse", a typical Knopfler trope.

  • "Love you like the stars above".... "Through the bars of Orion" both are lines that paint a picture of a starry sky to add to the romantic imagery of this song... Always been one of my favoutites....

    P.S. Great username!! pullingtheton1234

  • Mark is a true guitar ledgend and always will be

  • I noticed this just now; he sings better than ever, more clear and with more melody. If this is from the emmylou tour i can hardly wait for the dvd, with better audio (the solo guitar was a little too loud for the handcam) to come out!

  • He quit smoking.

  • well done

  • beautiful.
